Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

I am dropping S21 off right now for his senior year and trying to get s24 to finish his stuff before leaving in two weeks. One more reminder that they will accumulate so much stuff over 4 years! 4 trips to the storage unit. Yikes!!

It is possible I was eventually banished from the process. The words “impatient” and “hovering” may have been used.

As a fellow likely-banishee, I can relate.

The dog knows something is up as he sees D20’s boxes piling up for the move to law school. Of course, he’s used to her leaving but has no idea that D24 will also be leaving next week. The poor thing.

I have been driving D24 bananas this morning by playing this song (since we’re driving to TX next Thurs!). :joy: It’s to the point where she barks at me, “LEAVE ME ALONE!” LOL.

Car is packed, just got home from nice family dinner, and we drive S24 up at 7 am. He says he will allow us 30 minutes to help set up then he is kicking us out.:grimacing::disappointed_relieved:

We’ll see. We are dropping twins off this Thursday. They are our first. But earlier that same day our YOUNGEST is heading into kindergarten. (I know.)

I’m expecting it to be a rough day for the wife.

D24 is moved in. We did the 12 hour drive Tuesday, orientation Wednesday and Thursday. Move in was Wednesday, but not enough time during a break of orientation stuff. But most things were in. Thursday was much better and we got the furniture arranged in a way she’s happy with. I’ll stay one more day and leave Sunday morning. She has met a few friends already, which makes me very happy

I have been enjoying all the updates about The Departure day. Seeing where we started with worries about applications being done on time beginning of senior year to it getting real that they are leaving us - it’s surreal. Anyway, while I thought I could kick back and relax, it turns out I had at least a few big parent tasks left to do before sendoff. I secured UMichigan football tickets for family weekend (it really felt like trying to get concert tickets) and had to get the old laptop ready for trade-in and set up the new college laptop …on top of household procurement for items needed for college aka ordering something at least every other day.

C24 is mostly a planner so with a little prodding the packing is getting close to done. There is a part of me that is sad but an even bigger part that is happy for them. Just a few days left before we have the circle of life moment dropping off our youngest at college. Maybe I can add the Lion King soundtrack to our road-trip

We leave tomorrow at 8am. D24 is just about all packed, we’re loading the car later this afternoon. Tomorrow’s forecast looks terrible, was hoping to enjoy some campus exploration together after we get her moved in, but it might be too soggy.

I am feeling sad and excited all at once. I simultaneously want to just be up there setting her up already, but also wanting to rewind the clock a few months.

Arrived 1058 for an 1100 check in, feeling cocky, likely jinxing it.

S24’s move in process involves signing up for a move in time slot. I suggested earlier is better, which it generally is, as things should be moving faster earlier in the day, plus that allows time to go back to Target after move in, before the late afternoon start of orientation. (Older sibling had a late day move in and there was very little time to assist before orientation started - with the other family still in the room the whole time even though they had been there for hours, it was rough trying to get everything set up.)

So S24 signed us up for the 8 am slot. Winning? I’m thinking naptime early afternoon.

My folks are visiting my sister and walked my nephew to school, and his elementary school is in sight of the Mines M - happened to catch students on the M hike and could hear them cheering as they got there to place their rocks. I know someone here has a Mines kid - if you look reaaaal close, you can see students (not personally identifiable) made the morning walk to school extra special!

Successful move in for S24! School was very organized so check in and unloading was easy. We had a fairly minimalist approach and were totally unpacked in under 2 hours. He is very happy with his room set up! Did a quick grocery run, said good bye, and we made it home in time for the Jaguars kick off. I’m astonished how well everything went. I was a mess yesterday and this morning but now I feel so happy and relieved that move in was a success!

Preparations are nearing completion for Monday’s departure. Bags are mostly packed, van to the airport reserved, etc. Got a cortisone injection and hired a couple of extra hands from Dolly to thwart an attempted betrayal by my knee. Today we had early cupcakes as we will miss her 18th birthday, which falls during orientation. Tomorrow she will meet by Zoom with her advisor to confirm her schedule, other than the freshman seminar components, which will be decided next week. Good progress! Best wishes to all on the ground and those headed that way!

i just read about this tradition. So cool!

Good to see that some of you have dropped your kids already at college and back. Hope everyone is settling in.

We are getting ready to leave on Wednesday and I am feeling a bit anxious as we get closer. S24 also says he is starting to feel homesick already and he has not yet left. He is our only Kid so it will take getting used to. DH does not like talking about this stuff though I know he feels it. Hopefully things will be easier than I expect.

We just got back from a whirlwind trip to Europe. We are continuing to wing it.

We have a room full of stuff we bought and had delivered….And absolutely zero packed. Departing Thursday very early for midday move in at UMD.

I guess we’ll just recycle the Europe luggage for clothes. At least they roll well.

We are in stage 1… denial

So Washu has a full weekend of events such that S24 was with us Friday night, but then we are still here but he was in his dorm last night.

And then NiceUnparticularMom ends up not sleeping in our bed. She originally claimed I was snoring (as if!), but eventually admitted she wanted to sleep in S24’s former bed.

Two Target trips, three meals out, and final hugs accomplished. NiceUnparticularMom was crying but was able to get it together for a wine & liquor store run (we’re staying over one more night).
