Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

We started out exploring electronic scooters or bikes and that got nowhere because they don’t allow those inside any campus buildings and you can’t charge them inside your room at all. So it’s a no go with that.

@sbinaz I love your daughter both for finding Sports Boys suspect, and for politely calling them Sports Boys instead of Bros. The easy way out at D24’s school is to call them frat boys, but I have been encouraging her to differentiate Bros from frat boys, at least technically, because some frat boys might outgrow the Bro later.

 yeah, not all sports boys are Bros. And not all frat boys are Bros!

I’m having flashbacks to logic questions : if not all sports boys are bros, and not all frat boys are bros, then sports boys :frat boys are? :joy:

Bought D24’s plane ticket to come home for spring break using my Southwest Airlines points, so it only cost us $51. Woo!

S24 is coming home for the fall break. He’s coming early so he can meet his out of state GF who is also coming home today. So far it’s been a mix bag but overall he seems very happy with school.

He did well (A, A-) on all the Chem (his major) and Bio midterms and labs. The Chem professor is a great teacher but a harsh grader. His Rate My Professor reviews are pretty scary so S24 went in with this information. The Chem midterm was quite hard with a lot of students complaining about it so when he got his grade back he was relieved.

And then he bombs an OPEN BOOK take home Psych test with a Prof where “Rate My Professor” reviews say it is the easiest A in the College of Science! Arghhh. Psych is not exactly an easy subject but this professor is well known for being very easy going.

True story.

I took a law school class with a state senator who supposedly was a relatively easy grader.

And then Professor Obama gave me one of my worst law school grades!

We visited D24 last weekend for “family weekend” but just for the day. She is doing so well it makes my heart happy. Her roommate apparently hardly speaks to her, but D24 says she doesn’t really care. “I want quiet in my room when I am there anyway”. lol
Conflict adverse me would be dying in this situation. I said hello to roommate when she walked in briefly with her boyfriend. Boyfriend said hello and roommate was silent. :flushed: You may remember that this is the girl whose mother called ME to wake her up! I think I should have gotten a hello as thanks for her not missing her exam. My husband says to let it go.

My daughter and hubby are clearly more mature than me.
D24 will come home for a whole weekend soon (to vote in person!) and I can’t wait.

Makes me think of Pitch Perfect Becca’s roommate Kimmy Jin :joy:

I am bouncing off the walls today because D24 comes home tonight for fall break! I have not seen her in 7 weeks, I cannot wait to hug her. I think she might even actually miss us, too. She is taking a bus that arrives at a location about an hour from our house at 10:30pm. I am working on my extra cup of coffee this morning in anticipation of staying up (I’m an in bed by 10 person, generally). Her at-home BFF, who lives 2 doors down from us and is home this year attending CC has already told me she plans to come over as soon as she sees our car pull in the driveway. So excited for these two to be reunited.

She’s only home until Tuesday - but somehow I managed to drop nearly $100 on random groceries last night “just for her.” Which is kind of laughable considering we’ll be fasting for the first full day of her 3 day stay (Yom Kippur). I forgot about all of her bougie grocery preferences

I think I counted three nearly-full loaves of bread that only S24 likes, that NiceUnparticularMom bought because he came back for a long weekend break. Not sure what we are going to do with all that.

S24 is also coming home this weekend from UMD for the first time. He’s figured out the train situation which works pretty well for MD to NJ. Not here too long - he has to get back in time for John Mulaney on campus… :grinning:

I now get the happiness that empty nesters feel when the kids are home. S21 came home today. All of us under one roof even if its just for 3 days.
I watched how they both hugged DH and the grandparents for the longest time. Didnt want to get them out of my sight for the first few hours.
They endured the smothering quite well.

When you mentioned all the groceries for the visit home, that made me think of the old SNL skit “Back Home Ballers”.

Talked to D24 for a little yesterday. They had school off yesterday, no classes.

D24 got results of 1st Bio midterm. 60%. Class average was 52%. Professor showed a list of current average grades of all the students (with names removed) in the class. D24 said, “Mama, half of the class has, like, an average of an F right now. So my average of a 73% is pretty good. And the professor said not to worry because everybody bombs the 1st exam and he’s gonna give us a bunch of extra HWs and stuff so we can earn extra points. By comparison to everybody else, I’m doing pretty well.”

She’s planning on going to office hours next week and will be changing up her study techniques for the next test. :slightly_smiling_face:

Apparently some time soon, like some time in the next couple of weeks, all students will be meeting w/their faculty mentors to figure out what classes to sign up for next semester. Feels like the current semester just started!

It is fast! Class registration is this month. So quick.

Same for my S24. Fortunately he had a plan for the year that has survived contact with reality, so it should be straightforward. But it does seem fast!

College is so compressed! In 12 weeks they cover an entire year of BC Calc for example. It’s crazy. My kids basically have classes from the first week of Sept to the first week of December, with a week off in the middle.
