My S24 has a summer internship at the company where I work, and it should be decent experience letting him rotate through our accounting, marketing, and legal departments, but I acknowledge the blatant nepotism is not fair.
D24 has submitted at least 10 summer applications and so far has gotten one interview, which would be an amazing opportunity if it worked out, but it definitely is hard to compete as freshman. We will see.
1/10 is great. Kids are applying to 100 to get one.
Congrats to your son and daughter.
D24 is now considering taking an EMT certification course at our local community college over the summer.
We are very excited to see D24, who finally will be home for her spring break this coming weekend!
I am continually finding myself in awe of the kind and supportive nature of the current generation of students. Some recent examples:
Last weekend, two of D24ās hometown BFFs flew to visit her on campus during part of their respective spring breaks.
The weekend prior, not having known her on her actual birthday, some of her new college friends surprised her with a celebration of her āhalf birthdayā.
Also, on a more bittersweet note, I attended a celebration of life for my aunt this past weekend. Some of her grandsonās university orchestra brass section mates traveled four hours to the service to perform an exquisite rendition of the Moonlight Sonata with him in her honor.
Warms my heart!
One S24 has been home for spring break this week and itās been really fun to hear about all the activities heās involved with at his school. He is super social, so is at lots of different kinds on parties ā sports teams, the frats, the art kids (heās an art student) and he says the kids on his campus are so nice and smart and heās made lots of new good friends with really varied interests. He is all over the city (St. Louis) and Iām really proud of him for that. Heās also been trying to get a summer art-related job in the northeast and I think thatās going to be hard as a freshman going into sophomore year. I told him not to be disappointed if he canāt get an āadult seemingā summer job this year and what he might need to do do is just focus on earning some spending money.
Our other S24 is in Colorado where the snow this year has been āepic.ā Heās having a great semester and I donāt think a team of oxen could drag him home. He is off next week and so some of us (coughāDH) will head there for skiing in an attempt to relive some glory days on the slopes.
Ok now D24 is instead considering getting CNA certified. Shorter duration of training (5 wk instead of 10), easier to find work, lots of positions available in our area. Purpose is to start racking up patient care experience hours for PA school later on. EMT jobs in the area near her college require you to be able to lift 200 lbā¦so yeah, thatās not going to happen.
I had a funny conversation with C24 yesterday ā apparently theyāre starting to think through the ways their preferred career paths (acting, sociology) may not actually yield jobs that pay well enough, so they started out asking how I liked being a lawyer. Then they mused that maybe they can become a lawyer, but live in NYC so that they can audition when they need to.
Ten minutes later, when I stopped laughing, we talked about them maybe just trying to find a 9-5 job with some flexibility if they also want to keep pursuing acting jobs.
In all seriousness, though, Iām delighted to see my kid looking at the world around them, learning about new career paths and really thinking through whatās available and how it relates to what they want to do. Meanwhile, theyāre still loving statistics and have applied for a research fellowship on campus for the summer. Weāll see if they get it.
Can she do an MA program or train to be a scribe? Those jobs are very well paid, many options or where to work and will defintiely strengthen her application, and she can work as either for 1-2 years or more before applying to whatever school she ultimately decides on
S21 is graduating with a bfa acting this year from uncsa. He got internships the last two summers in arts administration (development). There are many jobs in this that he can do during the day and continue to do other things at night
You never know what will happen in NYC in the theater worldā¦I love these dreams!
And it turns out you never know what will happen in the art world in NYC! S24 has somehow secured himself a paying job there for the summer and he is moving despite not knowing where he will live. We told him he has to finance this himself and he says he will do whatever it takes to make it work. I did the exact same thing many years ago down to the āno place to liveā and it was an amazing, transformational experience so Iām like 50% excited for him, 50% in a flat-out mom panic.
Thatās exciting! Iād be in panic mode for sure. I hope he figures out living. At least he has a couple months.
I found this today and thought I would share for anyone looking for summer housing for students doing internships in NYC.
D24ās return flight home for May at the end of the semester is booked! DH is going to fly there the day before to help her get all of her stuff moved to a storage unit that she & her roommate are going to share for the summer. Itās been nice having her home all week. She flies back to school early tomorrow morning.
Itās so nice that things have worked out so well with her roommate- seems like it was a great fit.
Dropped The Child off at the airport at 5:50 this morning for her ~2 hr flight back to TX. Would she let me give her a hug before she scampered off? NO! Denied! Not fair. She laughed, I laughed. It was pretty funny as I shouted at her, āWhat? Come on! Youāre killinā me!ā right there curb-side.
Thanks to the big suitcase we got for cheap a couple of days ago at Goodwill, her rolling carry-on suitcase fit inside that. All of the clothes sheās bringing home for the summer will fit between both of those. Tried to convince her that she doesnāt have to bring home every sweatshirt she owns since itāll be, literally, summer time.
She managed to check the big suitcase as luggage all on her own, which was a first. Normally when weāve traveled via plane as a family, we always go with only carry-on luggage, so sheās not very familiar with the process of checking luggage, let alone doing it on her own. So the next level of adulting has been unlocked.
Dropped S24 off at the airport and his flight takes off in a few. He dodged terrible weather down there yesterday but now has to fly through thunderstorms as he heads south. I am thinking it is not going to be a fun ride. He is also leaving late and worried he will miss the shuttle he booked back to campus. Really hoping he makes it. He had a great visit here this week- even left mid week to visit a friend from school who is a 3 hour drive away from us- really enjoyed spending a couple days with him and seeing the āhome lifeā of a friend from school. He is much more positive and excited about this semester thankfully. Tod me on the drive to the airport that he is happy he is finally in a place where he is excited to be heading back to school. HIs dad and sister are flying down there to see him in a month so she can do the official admissions tour since she is applying to his school. Then he is home for the summer 4 weeks after they leave- crazy.
I went to visit for spring break and we had a nice time. She spent Saturday in a storm shelter on campus. Nothing got too bad for her but we figured it was easy enough to be there so why not. She got some homework done.
Hard to believe the next time I see her will be to move her out!
She filled out a couple job applications and I will drop them off for her. Weāre hoping she is set before she gets home.
