Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Of course she will party in college. I was a partier in college and high school–I have no problem with my daughter letting her hair down a little–or occasionally a lot if she’s safe. But the problem we have with drugs (all three of us) has to do with the pervasive weed culture where we live. Not everyone has to deal with that stench every day–in their middle-class neighborhood, on the road everywhere, where people are driving lit. It’s a real lesson in people letting things get out of control, and how easily they slide into it.

My kids have had to clue me in that it wasn’t skunks we were smelling in the middle of a city. Apparently they know because kids smoke in the parking lot before school.

Seriously, though, pot is still illegal where I live and my work/living situation was too precarious in college for me to feel safe trying anything. So I’ve never had much reason to know what pot smells like.

I had to tell my younger brother (who is 47!) what the skunk smell was in downtown Little Rock when we were visiting a relative. He’d smelled weed before–but never quite that low-quality! P.S. Weed is technically illegal where I live too.

When S25 went to his LAC, there was an option on the dorm/roommate preference form to select a “substance free” dorm . I remember thinking which parent will say - Go ahead! pick the dorm that allows substances.

Something else that I was shocked at, D23 just had to take a drug test for her summer job and the test included marijuana. We live in the PNW and weed is everywhere so I was really surprised. She passed

Especially with alcohol in their systems, I know we hope none of them will drink- or at least I do, but reality is reality

My ‘24 kid never gets sick and would be fine just suffering through it. We might pick up a thermometer and a pack of cold medicine just in case.

Is it a government type job?

Nope, with a summer camp

We are getting ready for a series of conversations with DD and her doctor about interactions between her anxiety medication and alcohol. It’s a tough conversation because apparently there can be some bad reactions. She has been on a very low maintenance dose for a year. There never seems to be a great time to get off but we were working on this spring, but her anxiety seems to be ramping up a bit more. We just need to know the risks and come up with a plan.

It’s understandable considering big changes are ahead, but hopefully she will feel better once the dust settles in a couple of months.

We had a similar talk with my D22. It is needed so they get it. They have decided to partake in other now legal things….

Yep. I suspect that is where she will end up too. There are worse things. She is a very popular driver of friends😇

I’ll add Pepto Bismol to the medicine kit. Was not fun for D22 going to the store when she needed it and she could only find the liquid form which we all find pretty awful.

I am always worried that I would fail a random drug test after spending a few hours in NYC. There was a time, not so long ago that I didn’t know what weed smelled like

I failed a drug test because of a poppy seed bagel! It was for an internship with the Department of Justice . I remember being so flustered when I got the call. They kept asking me about what I’d eaten over the last few days and it took forever for me to finally get to the poppy seed bagel. They said that was consistent with what they had found so gave me a pass.

TSA pre-check is my go to grad gift! (As a side note, my son texts me every time he flies to tell me how much he appreciates it!)

Planning to get this for my S24 also if he goes somewhere that requires flying.
