Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Anyone else think it’s cruel that they added Feb 29 as a day this year? I mean, c’mon … Read the room.

Wait–they did WHAT?!?

I’ve been signing all my checks wrong today!

We talked to D24 yesterday about her coming up with a $$ amount for spending money & personal expenses for next year at college. There was a lot of teenager eye-rolling and “Whatever” coming out of The Child. Suggested she consider going off of the “books & personal expenses” row of the Cost of Attendance of the different colleges she’s got on her short list.

More eye rolling and Whatever’s from The Child. LOL.

She’s got a little $$ set aside for this already and plans to work a lot over the summer in order to build up her reserves.

But when we suggested she compare the ‘personal expenses’ amounts at the different colleges, she said, “Whatever. I don’t care about the other colleges. I only care about Austin College.”

YAY! SHE’S FOUND A SCHOOL SHE LIKES AND WANTS TO ATTEND!

Congratulations! So excited she found a great school and made a decision she is really happy about!!!

Anyone else’s kid struggling with decision paralysis? S24 talks like South Carolina Honors is the one, and says how much he loves it, but he just can’t pull the trigger. Can’t even tell me a top 2 or three. Unwilling to take any of them out of the running. He is going to a SCHC info session in two weeks and hopefully, by then, he will be ready to commit. I worry he is missing out on earlier registration for orientation sessions and dorm selection, etc.

We’re still waiting on decisions from 4 schools. Ugh. This whole process is so long!

Yep. D casually referenced two smaller schools being back in the running that I thought she dropped months ago. And still waiting on five RD.

My kids are four years apart, so now that you’ve pointed it out, I’m pre-mad at 2028.

lol. I’m trying to convince myself that the extra work day somehow means decisions will come sooner

Here’s a random question while we wait: has your child turned down any offers yet? At our nudging, D24 has turned down two. DePaul has rolling admissions, and so we thought it might actually open the way for someone else. Clark U recently sent out an email asking if she felt like giving an update. She let them know she’s not going to accept, because they might be able to offer the merit to someone else. I’m just curious.

S24 has turned down one offer. It was his least favorite school and he had already decided it wasn’t for him before he got his acceptance.

Yes, d turned down Wheaton (Mass) and Pitt so far. Wheaton is small and they were super generous with merit and honors so we didn’t want to string them along. Reluctant to give up any others

D24 was in that spot 2 weeks ago. But is she ready for us to put down an enrollment deposit at her school of choice? No. Because we’re still awaiting financial aid info.

Meanwhile, we get emails what feels like every other day (ok, not quite that often, maybe twice a week) from some of the colleges containing messages that all, emotionally-speaking, sound like this:

“ALARM! ALARM! Pay your enrollment deposit now so you can get a good spot for orientation! Otherwise, you’ll end up with lousy classes at lousy times and you won’t get into the classes you need!”

And that’s really frustrating.

Does the HC give any housing priority? Might help a bit on that issue.

Generally I am sympathetic to these kids finding it overwhelming to actually commit. I mean, it is has been built up so much for so many of them, and now suddenly that world of options is going to collapse down to one.

But, you know, you can in fact only attend one (well, one at a time). It just understandably might take some kids down to the wire.

Only 4? Lucky.

(I am actually fully sympathetic, but a few of us have kids in double digits for RD, so 4 looks great from that perspective.)

I’m generally in favor, but for a variety of very specific reasons S24 cannot rule either of his actual offers out yet. And probably not any of his open applications either, although I think there are one or two not looking great (absent surprising merit or such).

18 for us. We’ve been here before and I don’t enjoy it in the least. Let’s hope #3 is the charm and we can avoid this situation next year.

You’ve got me beat on the 18 (only 13 for mine, 12 if you take William & Mary’s cypher postcard as sufficiently certain).

On the other hand, since I have a D30, your last will probably be done before the norm hits 45 RD apps . . . .

D applied to 10 total. Has acceptances from the first 6 but her top 3 choices are in the final 4 we’re waiting on.

Waiting on 6  so far only secured our safety, high stat kid, strategy was to do one safety and mostly reach(soul crushing wouldn’t recc).

We are still waiting to hear from a double-digit number of schools. It’s going to be interesting to figure out how to lessen the blow of eventual rejections from so many schools.
