Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

Will she regret never knowing if she would have gotten in?

I do not think that she should withdraw if she believes that she might still like to attend the reach school. Nevertheless, in my experience if the admissions office is unexpectedly experiencing a much lower yield than they originally calculated, it might change their decisions. However, this change usually results in letting kids off the waitlist earlier than expected (between April 1 and May 1), not in admitting student students in the regular round. In other words, as soon as you know that your child will definitely NOT attend, it is appropriate to tell the college since it gives them additional data for their calculations. There is no need to decide early if your kid truly doesn’t know.

Do y’all think it’s too late/irrelevant to update schools on new accomplishments at this point? Over the weekend, a play C24 wrote did well enough in our state theatrical competition to make it to the national competition. To me that seems like something significant they’d want admissions officers to know, but admittedly I’m wearing mom goggles and may be over-enthusiastic.

It may be too late, but there would be no harm in sending that information. It sounds like a significant achievement.

Thanks for all of the responses. It sounds like in this phase of the process other applicants probably wouldn’t be affected whether D24 withdraws her application or not. Probably.

Unfortunately, the reach school won’t guarantee her what the target is offering her. She was able to audition for the target last month and secure a spot in the applied studio for a performance minor. The reach won’t do auditions until after school starts. It’s a minor at this point, but very important to her.

Her dad and I would be interested to know if the reach school would accept her. We both went to grad school there and would gladly take any swag they might send. However, I wouldn’t want to potentially hurt someone else by waiting for a decision that is no longer needed.

D24 set a deadline of this Friday when the optional LOCI is due to decide. I think she’s ready to withdraw the application and move on.

Sounds like someone needs to start ScholarMatchEast

That sounds worthy of submitting as an update. I certainly don’t think it can do any harm and could be the extra that pushes your child into the accept pile. Congratulations to your child- you and they should be very proud!

On our way home from a couple of days in Austin. D24’s audition yesterday went fine. They’ll notify her tomorrow about the music scholarship. Downtown Georgetown on Sat evening was packed. Turns out that Fri and Sat was Southwestern’s spring parent weekend event.

The 600 Degrees pizza place in downtown Georgetown was a disappointment. We couldn’t figure out what the big deal was about it. But had breakfast twice at Monument Cafe.

D24 won’t tell me what she thinks about whether or not she wants to go to Southwestern or Austin College and she’s tired of me asking so I’m backing off but am chomping at the bit for a decision from her.

Sure wish FAFSA wasn’t a mess still so we’d know fin aid info by now.

Dallas Love Field airport is way better than the Austin airport. And I can’t get over how weird the on and off ramps on the freeways are. The freeway system in general in both Dallas and Austin are confusing, even with Siri telling me where to go! :joy:

The weather yesterday was really lovely. We are glad to be flying back home though. D24’s old principal from when she was in elementary school is a school principal now in Austin so we stopped by his current school to say hello today on a whim and he totally remembered her. It was really great. D24 is mad at me for making her go in to talk to him but I told her that teachers and principals dig this sort of thing and I was totally right. :slightly_smiling_face:

Here’s a pick yesterday from Southwestern:

William and Mary may be out for those who received a postcard. My son got his acceptance and Monroe Scholars offer right at 5pm.

I think maybe just everyone who was chosen for Monroe Scholars got their decision today. I didn’t get any postcard but did receive an acceptance + Monroe offer.

Yes, it’s Monroe notification day.

I was just thinking of a fun idea.

We should have college decision reveal parties instead of gender reveal parties. Balloons that are popped with school color and mascot confetti inside. Cake that has the school colors inside when cut. Canons that shoot off stuff. Fireworks too!

I see a new business in my future (to go along with my college tour trip nanny idea)

Leaving sooner is hard to deal with and I am pushing my son not to do it. Don’t know if he will listen.

Update it. Even if they don’t do anything with it, it won’t hurt. You only stand to gain if they use it to evaluate the application.

So extreme example–we might be buying a new car today (first in ten years!). We had been casually looking and suddenly realized a car we like had a special limited edition in 2023 in my favorite car colors. They are discounted because they are now behind a model year, but rare enough we are probably jumping on one today.

Meanwhile, my S24 has been getting good news from William & Mary recently, colors green and gold. The car colors? Dark green exterior with tan interior–so like British sportscar colors. You know, like as in William III and Mary II of England . . . .

So did the universe just throw us a college reveal party? TBD I guess.

Congrats on your offer. What I had meant was that anyone who did receive a postcard should check their email.

I thought about doing a college reveal video of my son, like having hats for his top choices and having him choose a hat, but he doesn’t want to do anything like that. He will probably just add his school to his Instagram profile and that will be it.

And big congratulations to all who received good news from William & Mary! What an incredible gem of a college! :green_heart::yellow_heart:

D24 was also accepted as a Monroe Scholar at William & Mary yesterday. She did not receive a cypher postcard so this was a wonderful surprise, and it certainly made this long month of waiting on decisions a bit easier!

Not sure about the answer to your question, but wanted to say a huge congratulations to your child. Will the play be put on at ITF in Indiana in June? May I message you privately?
