Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 2)

yes, and yes.

I note I think all this is confirming that who gets cypher postcards is a bit random, with the main random factor being the order in which they end up going through individual applications.

I’m actually kinda curious about the timeline with my S24. It was great for him to get the postcard, but it only beat the Monroe email by something like 11 days in his case. In theory that leaves a little room for more people to be reviewed in time for Monroe but not the postcard, but not a lot!

Our mail service sometimes leaves a bit to be desired, so I’ve been wondering if it’s possible she did get sent a postcard but just didn’t receive it. I guess we will never know unless it mysteriously shows up at some point. I do agree that there must be a reason not all Monroe scholars seem to get the postcard- perhaps each admissions counselor gets a certain number they can send ?

I highly recommend the USPS Informed Delivery service, it really helps to know what is supposed to be in the mail. Sometimes ours shows up a few days later, but I know to look for it. The W&M postcard photo let me know that it was on the way.

I’m excited for all of these potential members of the WM Tribe! I’m an alum and both of my children attended/are attending. Happy to answer any questions that may come up.

I have been thinking of signing up for informed delivery, and this may be the push I need to do so. Thanks!

I don’t remember D22 receiving a postcard ahead of Monroe Scholar either.

I really like it, but it also showed a ā€œsmall envelopeā€ for one school so I spent the day knowing bad news awaited her and ouch was kind of a bummer! Hoping it will show better news in the coming weeks.

That is one of the things that is making me hesitant. Hoping for no more small envelopes headed your way.

D24 was notified yesterday that she’s getting a music scholarship at Southwestern! Yay! But the letter didn’t say how much it’s for and it appears that she’ll have to wait a little longer to find out what the $$ amount is, so that part is a little frustrating.

DH pressed D24 yesterday evening for a decision on where she wants to go to college. Fur was flying over that, so if you felt a disturbance in The Force at about 8:30 pm yesterday, that’s why. Honestly, though, I’m proud of how D24 pushed back on us parents. She said:

  • she’s not ready to make a decision yet
  • she needs to think about it some more
  • none of her friends have decided yet where they’re going to go
  • it’s a big decision and she feels really overwhelmed with having to decide where she’s going to live for the next 4 years
  • she’s deciding between 3 colleges right now and each of them have good things about them and she’s really struggling with picking
  • the more we pressure her to decide, the more she wants to take more time to decide, so BACK OFF, Mom and Dad!
  • ā€œthe cost might be YOUR #1 thing (directed to my DH), but it’s just one of a BUNCH of things that are going into my decision. It’s my life and my decision!ā€
  • ā€œDaddy, it’s like the only thing you want to talk about is college. I’m sick of talking about it!ā€

So we’re backing off. She asked me on Sunday what the cost difference is between the 2 private colleges vs U of A. I mentioned to her that I have it in a spreadsheet that I can show her whenever she’s ready to take a look, and that when we get estimated or actual fin aid package info from the schools, we’ll revise that and she can revisit her decision.

Meanwhile, U of A sent a reminder email about housing and needing to do all of the housing things by 4/1, which is now less than a month away. The U of A admitted students day is actually AFTER 4/1, which I think is frustrating and stupid. ā€œPay us money for housing before we can tell you what the COA will be for you and before you’ve decided for sure that you want to go here.ā€

What if you’re a student who doesn’t have a few hundred extra $$ lying around to put down a housing deposit at multiple places? What the heck? I get it why students are feeling the heat right now.

Sorry to hear that.

I didn’t know any schools still provided decisions by snail mail. I guess a few still do.
Good luck with the remaining apps.

Yes, this was a while ago and it wasn’t a top favorite but KNOWING she would be getting the mail after school to a rejection was a downer.

The skinny envelope was the kiss of death back in the day - you didn’t even need to open it to know it was bad news.

That was mostly true, but there were a few colleges that would send a skinny envelope first saying GREAT NEWS!!! and look in the mail for a bigger package coming later. So I always believe in opening the envelope…size doesn’t always tell the story. That said, I’ve never heard of a thick envelope bearing bad news.

Yes, her first decision was an acceptance and in a big envelope (not a portal) and she stayed late that day so I stared at it for a while thinking ā€œis this more marketing or is it a yes??ā€
Awaiting two more decisions, one will be a portal and one I have no idea - I can’t find any info on past social media posts or anything indicating how they do it (and it’s a VERY small school - College of the Atlantic - so googling isn’t finding anything either)

My DC was contacted by AO of an EA school where she got deferred. Does anyone with similar experience know what to expect?
TIA

I hated that so much back in the day. Seemed cruel.

My acceptance came in a small envelope back in the day and my older kid got hood news via small envelope a few years ago also. You never know!

D24 is home sick today. I know it is bad when she is willing to stay home the entire day. Normally, even if she isn’t feeling 100% she drags herself in for last period (calc) because she’s so worried about falling behind.

The good news is that we’re in that sweet spot in her high school journey where if she falls a bit behind…so what?
