Very exciting Monday morning around here too- D24 accepted at SLO and SDSU. PHEW -in state tuition! She is over the moon and will have some tough decisions. Off to book last minute travel! Congrats to the other slo admits- and fingers crossed for all those still waiting on ā€œsloā€ decisions to roll out.

D24 has already said that she wants to bring her 2 light sabers to college w/her. So those will go up on the wall with Command Strip broom holder/hanger thingies. Other than that, she’s said that she wants a blue bedspread/comforter and does NOT want big headboards or white fluffy area rugs (which will be disgustingly dirty w/in a couple of weeks).

or thrown up on. Ask me how I know

We got a washable flat pile rug. DD and her roommate have a shoes at the door policy, but we wash the rug when it comes home for summer. (as well as comforters, pillows, etc). But when it comes to college (and roommate) living, less is definitely more.

For some students, dorm room decor is an expression of creativity, writ large. For others, not so much. What I want to know are the best storage hacks!

Few items of clothes :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Go somewhere warm! Warm weather clothes are a lot less bulky :joy:

Hee! Knew you all would be an absolute fount of information! Our family knows sun, and cold, tho.

I’ve tried plastic lidded bins for my kid’s clothes storage (out of home). The feedback was that they preferred drawers. So I’m trying to figure out a drawer solution for more everyday clothes.

I’m about to break out the adult beverage- and I don’t mean that in a good way. Daughter still no SLO email. Going to cry.

S22 had a big wedge pillow on his bed and he still uses it in the apartment this year. It really makes leaning against it to read or do homework more comfortable. Other than that, everything was very basic and utilitarian for him. We hung a calendar and a white board on the wall, lol.

I think D24 will want more, but I also know she is not a neat and put it away kind of person, so I will encourage much less than she thinks. haha.

They also have to move it all out and lots ends up tossed at the end of the year it seems. There may be a resell facebook group that could be useful, especially if you are local-ish.

OMG I still remember when I was 6 years old, waking up in the middle of the night and barfing up my spaghetti dinner all over the pristine white 1970’s shag rug in my bedroom :joy:

This is exactly what we need to avoid. S24 will be packing on his own and getting on a plane and flying home. He will likely get a storage unit for some stuff for the summer, but we are def not coming down to move him out. I heard there are multiple huge dumpsters outside the dorms and the local Habitat for Humanity comes and takes away all the good stuff to sell in their local shop.

This is what D23 is doing this year and it’s what I did a million years ago. My instinct is to fly down and help her, but she absolutely is capable of managing this and I’m trying to step back

Ha! I can relate to this!

D24 ā€œis not a neat and put it away kind of person.ā€ YES! We are trying to train her up out of total beasthood before she leaves in the Fall. I can’t tell you what I took out of her room the other day–but I am not a weak-stomached person, and I screamed when she told me what I was carrying.

Well, I know 1 thing for sure…my D24 is disorganized with her stuff and she tends to have clutter laying around on surfaces. So I think we’ll be purchasing a lot of command strip hooks and other stuff to get things off of desk tops & other surfaces. for example:

  • a hook to hang your keys/lanyard
  • hook for your backpack
  • hook for your purse
  • hook for your towel and/or bathrobe
  • some sort of jewelry organizer that doesn’t lay flat on a table top
  • some way to organize all of her charging cables so they don’t take up half of her desk space like they do now at home

Seriously though…

The sterilite drawers are extremely popular and fit well under the bed. We got a couple of ROMOON dressers for D22 but she ended up fine with the dorm furniture.

We used hanging shelves in the closet for sweaters and such. She uses baskets on the bookshelf for loose clothing items like socks and underwear. A three tier cart makes a great side table.

One of the best purchases was these shelves which they share as a pantry for the room. We added S hooks to the sides for cups, spatulas, etc.

I have settled for trying to teach my kids the difference between messy and dirty. I don’t care that your dirty socks or on the floor, but please don’t shove that pizza box under your bed

Another good add: a large basket or similar to catch worn clothes that aren’t ready for laundry. Having a place for stuff that gets reworn but doesn’t require putting away really helps.
