Wow, what an incredible offer from such an exceptional school!

We are waiting on 9 more decisions-two to come this week after the waitlist from NEU yesterday. Most are reaches and far reaches for anybody-so very big probability that he will go 0-9…he is so busy with his robotics season for the next few weeks. Hopefully that will take his mind off any rejections to come. Have to keep reminding myself that he has some great acceptances already that will work for him. Can’t wait to transition to the decision making phase. Good Luck with the waiting everybody!

Providence (and all of Rhode Island really) has fantastic food. I particularly love the Appy Hour at Providence Oyster Bar. We just order ALL the apps and make it dinner. I second Den Den and Waterman Grill too. I don’t know what days of the week you will be there, but you can get free tickets for the RISD museum on Thursday evenings and Sundays. Grab in advance online. Have fun!

D24 is waiting on 5. Probably 3 reaches and 2 high targets. We shall see. Glad to see I am nowhere near the top of the pack!

No worries, right there with you. Weren’t those the days? They would get down to the last $25 or so and would have to pick the can opener to use it up.

Laughably, it was also 73 degrees in NW Indiana yesterday. Daffodils are blooming.

Monday we are expecting snow.

We are waiting ā€œonlyā€ 2 more! WashU and W&M. It will be our March Madness - let’s see what final 4 will be. Two teams are already in! Macalester (EA) and UNC (EA).

D24 is waiting on 4 more. Rejected by her super reach SCEA so long ago it feels like another lifetime lol. Accepted to all the east coast state schools she applied to (6) but only UConn came back with the magical combo of merit and honors college she was looking for. My city girl is surprisingly upbeat about UConn. We will visit in April.
Waitlisted by NEU yesterday. She is NMF so threw her app in with the crowd just to see if some merit showed up. It was her least favorite of schools we have toured so she was not upset. After moving multiple times in high school she really wants a school where she can find her people and be close for all 4 years. NEU seemed it would have lots of hellos and goodbyes throughout the years with multiple campuses and co-ops.
Her top 2 favorites are in the remaining 4. (2 likely and 2 reaches) April 1 can’t come soon enough! She has a BFF coming to visit that weekend so they can celebrate or console each other.
If all 4 are acceptances I am pretty clear on her rankings but we have agreed she will go to admitted students day for 3.
Hang in there everyone! My S18 and S19 applied to 3 schools and had all acceptances by winter break. This has been a much different and longer ride.

Then fall, NiceUnparticularMan!

Not really though. I’ve enjoyed this ride with you.

Random side note, but I sorta agree with a common observation that most decent-sized D1 college campuses are sort of like an idealized urban environment in themselves. All sorts of walkable amenities, including often great green spaces, museums, event centers, and major sports venues, and usually some sort of efficient transit system if it is spread out–just most of the stuff you would be looking for in a city anyway. Toss in any sort of nearby off-campus restaurants and bars, and that is a pretty good basic package from an urbanist perspective.

Of course I get some people really want to ALSO have a convenient big city to explore. But I think at least for daily, often weekly, urban living purposes, a decent-sized D1 campus is itself likely to cover a lot of the bases.

Not to totally change the subject, but is a black suit fine in place of a tuxedo if he wears a bowtie? He is going to need a tux for prom and also for formals at college (fraternities have a lot of formals) so I am thinking of just buying one. I am seeing black suits that look like they might do the trick but wanted to crowd source. Here is what I am looking at to get an idea of style: https://www.amazon.com/COOFANDY-Classic-Button-Wedding-Business/dp/B0B2K67CPT

If I recall, he’s going to a big SEC school. If so, yes, he is likely to need a tux, but try to get one second hand. If he is going to pledge a frat, I also have heard it can be a good idea to get a navy blazer and possibly a suit from Good Will or similar. Sometimes, pledges will be asked to do things like drive brothers around or do yard work in a tux . . . don’t want to have to wear the nice one. I also have been told that if he is pledging, he should not have a car on campus. Pledges with cars get woken in the night and asked to drive all over .

Yes he def will have a couple navy blazers- one cheap one and one nicer one. And he will not be bringing his car thankfully. I am honestly dreading this pledging process.

That’s a popular look in place of a traditional tux. No need for a bow tie. A solid silk tie work just as well. Black or silver in particular. Purple hues also look very sharp.

Checking in and seeing some great news with the kiddos. LOL on the March Madness reference. It truly is Mad Madness this year with so many releasing info before April. D24 has been blessed. Got into UCSanta Cruz, UCSanta Barbara, UC Davis (her top right now), and UCIrvine. Among the UCs, her top choices are UCLA and UCSD, although she did apply to Cal. Hoping for more good news. Rejected by Yale early action, so that nipped it in the bud. 3/28 is the big day that impacts all of my travel plans for Aug/Sep because she’s waiting for Brown, Harvard, and Princeton. I just can’t wait to buy some merch

I didn’t know it worked this way, we should’ve just applied to 20 schools with the 5% acceptance rate

At least in the North, people have been swapping nicely-tailored black suits worn with suspenders for tuxedos for a long time now. And of course the black suit is a very flexible garment.

I’d actually personally recommend starting with a black suit and then adding a nice white/ivory dinner jacket. Classic look for any black-tie occasion that will not scream ā€œrentalā€. Do you want to look like James Bond in Goldfinger? Of course you do:

That said, I have zero clue what the rules in the South might be.

I saw a tweet once that said (paraphrasing) ā€œPeople idealize their college years because for many it’s the only time they live in a walkable community.ā€ Which has (clearly) always stuck with me. I love working on a college campus - I have a mailroom for shipping things, good options for takeout or dine-in food, an ATM, a convenience store, a library AND access to so many subject matter experts and that’s just in my building! Beyond my own four walls, there is a gym, athletic fields and events, peformance spaces, radio station, etc.

I think a lot of students hear about how great college is and stress because, while there, they experience all of the normal ups and downs. Most of the time, the idealization (or idolization) and fond memories don’t happen until after you leave. It is then that you somehow forget about the stress from homework, tests, roommates, etc. and only remember the positive.
