Parents of the HS Class of 2025 (Part 1)

S25 is in at his ED1 with a 4 year full tuition scholarship! We are all thrilled, and he is especially thrilled because he never has to log into the Common App again. He held off applying to other schools because he was hopeful for this outcome (where he wouldn’t have to do any more applications). The only other application he had already submitted was for Macaulay (the honors college for the CUNY system) – as it had an early deadline. We won’t ever know the outcome of that since Macaulay decisions come out in March, and now that he is committed to his ED1, he will withdraw his application, but in the meantime they did accept him to the CUNY college through which he was applying for the honors program.

I am so glad he will get to enjoy winter break and the rest of his senior year with all the college stuff squared away!

Congrats to all who got accepted. Sympathies to all who were rejected. A nice mug of cocoa to all who were deferred to keep you company while you wait.

C25’s school has an ED release date of 12/17, so we’re still in the first wait for an answer.

It’s a little comforting that we have 2 rolling “yes” responses in pocket, but there’s a lot of hope out there for the ED and a couple of other EA applications still out there.

Long story short, I am likely quitting my TE school job this summer. Soooo, D25 will likely commit to her top choice which is a non-TE school anyways. She just wrote an additional essay for a scholarship so fingers crossed she gets it so the non TE school is extra affordable!

I feel safe in stating that most collegebound students have not yet submitted all of their applications. In fact, I strongly suspect that a majority—and if it isn’t it’s certainly a very sizable chunk anyway—of collegebound students have not yet submitted any applications.

So please don’t feel behind in anything.

My kid still has three left to complete — all big contenders for her. It will be a busy holiday break.

She didn’t want to apply ED anywhere. (Not ready to make a commitment like that). But seeing those who were accepted ED post “I’m going to ____!” does make one (erroneously) feel a bit behind when you have three big ones left!

Mine still has a bunch to do – every school on his list that didn’t offer EA. Right now that’s 8 schools (gulp), five of which have supplementals. Christmas break is gonna be LIT, y’all. (he’s also planning, optimistically, to finish his gov and econ courses and get a jumpstart on his learning-to-drive project. Oh, eternal hope-spring of youth…)

DD got in ED to her first choice school conditional acceptance that she takes summer school. We will take it! We are so so happy they recognized her hard work the last two years. All the best to your kiddo. I love what you said about it being a process…I know there will be hurdles in college too, but we will just enjoy this moment for now. Thanks to you all.

Twice we’ve worked on 15-20 apps over break. After the first few, especially if it involves an ivy type with lots of supplements, the work became just fine tuning existing essays to work with word count.

A tip is to hold on to earlier drafts, which tend to be longer, for source material.

Thank God we are down to one final essay–and the last application.

On a side note, our HS is killing it this year 5 Ivy acceptances (normally 1 maybe 2 a year) and they finally got a kid in at Brown which has been the white whale.

I wanted to add that, despite popular belief and opinion, later apps were stronger, tighter.

I am absolutely thrilled that third time is the charm and there will be no essay writing this holiday season. It was yet another very long list!

Kid was rejected from his dream school last night. There were lots of tears, but we will regroup in a few days and discuss ED2 as a possible option for their #2.

I’m so sorry.. It’s so tough when they work so hard. Hugs to you.
Here’s to the next step and finding that school that really is ‘the one’!

Thank you so much. I would love to put them on blast here, but I’m trying to temper my anger. They used my kid’s preferred name all through the application process and on the portal, but on the rejection letter, they used their dead name TWICE. Added to the sting.

S25 got deferred from LMU. I think that was the only one that could have “dethroned” DePaul, and it is twice the cost, so… I am sort of relieved in a way. He said he was honored they respected him enough to defer. His grades and scores were a smidge under their range so it isn’t really a surprise. He is feeling the whole “love the school that loves you back” and seems to be settling in. That said, LMU is an amazing school so I am truly joyful for the kids that got accepted.

I’m so sorry. Maybe someday your child will be able to view that as a clear indication that the school was definitely not the right one.

C25 has several more school scholarship essays to write and 2 more program supplementals (at some of their schools it’s a two part process to gain acceptance to their major) and LLC app. We didn’t apply ED, playing the long (merit) game instead.

Agree with this. My older kid went to MIT and at parent orientation that shared that the majority of acceptances were apps that came in close to the deadline, and that none of the very early apps from the first week of August were acceptances.

same here! And some of the acceptances have been quite shocking (ofc who am I to judge.) I know we have Princeton, Cornell, Brown, NYU, BC, BU, Hamilton, Bates, Bowdoin, HC and so forth.

I am not here much, wanted to pop in. DS has been accepted to Pitt Engineering. Has finished all apps and interviews for the Academies, and ROTC scholarships. He has received a nomination from one of our senators for the Naval Academy, and the congressman’s office called me to make sure DS is available to take a call on Dec. 23 from our congressman, so more nominations are coming. It has been a super busy fall!

D25 saw this message in her portal for one of your schools last night. She would like to switch to EA if that’s possible still. Should she email?
