We hope Maryland next Week (we are in state so best chance)
Beyond his stats which are great this kid loves to learn. Like he will talk for an hour about some bizarre fact he learned. He believes, wrongly in my opinion: that he has no shot at success unless it’s a top school and should have applied to every top 20 school and not worried about fit. And I’m like not speaking back because I know he doesn’t need me
Right now telling him he’s wrong.
But tomorrow I will tell him he is dead wrong. The notion that success comes from only 20 schools is stupid, narrow-minded and comes from a place of entitlement that he needs to get over.
The Week of Waiting is finally over! My daughter received a rejection from UNC - not a big surprise - and a deferral from NCSU - where she only applied because I asked her to. To my surprise, not only does she want to accept the deferral spot, she is stating NCSU is her top choice. Huh. I truly don’t know whether she can be accepted at NCSU, as they place a lot of importance on class rank and hers is poor. But there’s no harm in her leaving her hat in the ring as long as she continues to evaluate and be open to her other options. So far she seems to be doing that.
Setting the deferral aside, that leaves one remaining decision - RIT, where she’s applying for a pretty unique major. Hopefully we hear from them next week!
My son was accepted to Michigan today. It was a huge surprise, he has good stats but so do many others, and we are OOS. He was fully expecting a deferral. We are so thankful. He toured and interviewed with the head of the Residential College over the summer and this might have helped. Who knows. But he is very happy tonight. As a trans kid who is reeling from some of the events of the last couple of weeks this was a welcome piece of news.
So my D25 just told me that two colleges have emailed about missing tax documents for financial aid. They want them through IDOC. But when I go to to IDOC it says they have all been received, including the ones the colleges say are missing. And it says not to upload a document more than once. Now my D is going to stress all weekend until she can get in touch with financial aid. Why is this process so complicated?
Don’t worry, that’s normal. Some colleges collect documents from idoc at different times. Some accept them all whenever you first submit them but some have a certain day or point in the process when they request them. So they request the documents from idoc and then they’ll receive them automatically since they’re already there. There is nothing you need to do. I realize the email they send is confusing and it took me a few requests before I realized how it works. And yes, it is more complicated than it needs to be!
Thank you for the reassurance. Earlier in the process one college emailed three times about missing FAFSA and only received it after we emailed them twice. We had already completed it and made sure they were on the list. Just when it feels like we can just let the stress go until March, a new worry pops up.
I don’t know any students there, but I live near the city. American is in a nice area! Lots of (expensive) houses up there, good restaurants. Big leafy trees. It doesn’t feel like you are Right Downtown at all.
Remind your son that Purdue is a top 10 for engineering. They are tied with Cornell. He’s already accepted for a top school in his field! And Delaware has an awesome chem e program which is also highly ranked.
Let me know if he wants to connect with my Purdue chem e grad. She had an amazing undergrad experience and is thriving in her career. She has spoken with many CC kids over the last several years. Just pm me if he’s interested.
Unrelated to anything, my husband and I went out to hear a Tom Petty tribute band tonight and I had four beers and am now sloshed. So welcome to tipsy OctoberKate!
My kid seems to be in a better place than he was earlier tonight, so I’ll take it. He’s got a hard weekend ahead in terms of work, but I hope we can do something fun and rejuvenating.
I don’t know much about the student body at American but I’m familiar with Washington, DC. I grew up and went to undergrad in upstate NY, then moved to DC for grad school and work. After that I moved to Baltimore for a few years, living in both places as a young, single female. Also lived in Manhattan for over a decade and have spent lots of time in Philadelphia as well.
Out of all of these east coast cities, DC is my absolute favorite for young people. It’s relatively safe and clean compared to the others (if you stay in the right neighborhoods), culturally rich and very accessible - clean subway system that is easy to use. I was very comfortable there as a young person from rural NY. I loved the time I spent in DC.
Congrats to your daughter and best of luck with her decision.
I feel for those students with T20 or bust mentalities because they are still brilliant and don’t recognize it. Watching Ted Lasso it makes me think of Nate Shelley character who can’t see their own success unless constantly externally validated.
I feel very fortunate where my kids go to school as they are not pressured into a college only mentality (and certainly not ranking focused.) My kids go to a top 10 (to 15 depending on year) public high school in their state with about 1700 students that just did over 40mill of updates to their schools. Areas for tech and trades were expanded. Kids openly talk about plans to enter trades, military, or the workforce just as those talking college choices. I myself am the only person in my immediate family with a bachelors degree and the only one in my extended family with a doctorate. Maybe I am just really poor and uneducated myself but my kids just never felt that pressure about choosing a school based on rankings or popularity.
Hey, how’s he doing today? This whole process is so hard and I feel so much for our kids. I was thinking about you guys last night and this morning (is that weird coming from an internet stranger? Don’t mean to sound stalker-y, I just really feel for him and you) and I’ve been hoping that a night of sleep maybe puts him in a better place this morning.
My daughter got a nice acceptance package from Case Western this past week even though she turned it down right away (decisions were the same night) because she got into Penn ED - it had socks, a sticker, a drawstring bag, and a notebook. We’re going to give it to a friend who has a freshman at CWRU. Penn sent stickers and a pennant, they came the week after the notification.
Honestly, I’ve been thinking the same thing. I hate that you are having to deal with this @skkm0906 and I don’t know what I would do in your situation. Whatever the next steps are will not be easy, I just hope there can be some comfort along the way. Virtual hugs to you.
