That’s a good idea. I’ll suggest it to her.
My S23 was nominated but you’re right, because of the timing, the benefit just didn’t seem that great. And the big to do in DC seemed much more tempered post-Covid than earlier years when we looked into it. So, he wasn’t too excited about it and decided to let it go.
Question: Would you send semester grades to colleges that don’t request them? Grades are consistent with prior grades (All A’s with 1 B–which is the same for every semester all the way through)
Personally, for those colleges that DO NOT request mid year grade reports, I would not send them. If the grades had been consistently lower and last semester was better, I might consider doing so. Here, however, the grades are neutral from prior history so I don’t see where submitting them would be additive.
That said, for those that do request them, I would provide them without any concern.
I would only do it if it was requested.
S25 tells me that he had a great alumni/college interview last night, despite being a little sick. He has three more interviews to go, and then he can relax! Of course, campus visits might be looming–we didn’t visit any school ahead of time, as we didn’t know his chances for admission anywhere.
FWIW My kids HS sends both 1st quarter and midterm reports to ALL schools by default. (In fact it is set up in naviance as all or nothing).
I am sure universities are used to receiving extra ones as I know this is not unique to our HS.
That said, if universities don’t want it (and you know that) I wouldn’t send unless dramatic improvements you think might in some way move merit needle.
How do the mid year reports usually get sent? Is it through the common app? And if so how do you only send it to some schools and not others? D25 has only 2 schools that are wanting it.
It depends on the school. Some want you to upload it directly into the portal, some want SRAR and some want a transcript sent from the high school. There should be instructions on the deferral letter/school website.
Our high school sends mid-year reports to all colleges by default. However, those grades won’t be finalized until at least the 1st week of February.
1st quarter grades are only sent by request at our school
My S25 is just starting his 2nd semester of senior year this week. He is currently scheduled to take an elective health class first period. This is not a required class and he has more than enough credits to graduate. He’s looking to drop the class. Could this impact his college decisions (pending and received) since the high school transcript and SRAR submitted with his applications included his senior year courses and this course?
I doubt it, I think you are just supposed to make them aware of any schedule changes.
Thanks. I guess he would email the admissions counselor at each school to let them know of the change?
S23 is dating a G22 who is graduating a year early and studying for law school. Shes helped him refocus cause she wont tolerate a loser. He is TAing this semester for credit and is getting a paid gig a few hours a week. Theres hope for him!
Ive been watching D25 final choices responses to the last 2 weeks. Really happy with the social media for her top choice. Im ready to send the deposit check. She wants to wait to see if she got into the scholarship program there she applied to.
Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated.
Just venting - I’ve got a great kid who is very smart and ticked alot of the boxes in being a competitive applicant, but his unweighted GPA was subpar mostly due to a C he received 2nd semester Sophomore year when he was going through a really tough time. He got rejected to UF, deferred at South Carolina and Michigan and I just know he’s about to hit a string of Nos (Wisconsin, UIUC, Maryland, FSU etc). Last night I was trying to encourage him about his Penn State acceptance and he’s just so down on himself. He said Mom, I’m smart, I took hard classes, I got good grades - all to go to a school I’m not excited about? Its just difficult to see them go through this process and there isn’t anything else he can do about it. We tried to craft a balanced list but I think he has too many reach schools. But he really thought he had a shot at a few after he got his 35ACT score and AP scores, thinking it could balance out the GPA.
OK. Rant over.
So, upthread I asked a similar question about D25. In her case she had 3 years of Spanish when she applied as an ED student. Because of timing, she could not begin Spanish 4 this past Fall, but noted in her applications that she would be taking a full year credit course this Spring. She was accepted to her ED school. Then, in January she learned that the course was no longer being offered.
So, at my urging, she reported the issue to her ED school along with her proposal to substitute a different course.
The school immediately responded positively and approved the change in course schedule.
My thought process was that it was likely that it wouldn’t be an issue, but that in this case I would rather ask for permission than for forgiveness.
This is exactly what an AO told us at UCLA. Once they accept you they really want you to come to their school. But they also don’t want any surprises, so it’s always best to reach out to them first with any changes/issues.
Hugs to you. We are in the same boat and have vented on this thread too - it is cathartic. We are attending 2 admitted student events to muster up some enthusiasm. Maybe that is something you can consider for your son?
thanks - it helps to know there are others going through the same emotions. Yes, we are going to Penn State admitted student day in a couple of weeks. Hopefully that will drum up some excitement.
