I hope one of the upcoming schools surprises him! If it was just one semester of C, I’m sure a lot of schools can overlook that!
Thanks - I keep telling myself that. he was just deferred at Wisconsin. But its not a no!
We might be in a similar position soon. A deferral from a place that is moderately selective really took the wind out of D25’s sails. She is not excited about any of the places she’s been accepted. None of the colleges left are likelies. A few reaches and ones we think of as targets, but which might be low reaches in the current college app climate. Even though we tried to craft this list together, I think she assumed she wouldn’t have to seriously consider the likelies. I’m hoping some admitted student events will soften her to a couple of them if the rest of the apps don’t go as she hopes.
Thanks for commiserating. I so feel this but sending good thoughts to your daughter for a surprise yes in there!
S25 was accepted at UW-Madison, and deferred at Northeastern. He’s happy about Madison, but I think it’s mid-range on his list right now. He wasn’t very seriously interested in Northeastern, so he doesn’t really care about that deferral.
I can’t remember if I posted that he was deferred at WPI a couple weeks ago. That was a bit more of a surprise, but I think that was due to the fact that he hadn’t shown any demonstrated interest, and they are probably yield protecting. He just needs to remember to show some interest now!
Had dinner tonight with a friend whose daughter is currently a junior in college. The daughter ended up not getting into her match and reach schools, and she really, on paper, should have gotten in to more than one. She had targets on her list and got into them but, as you noted, had never really considered that those might be her only options. When that was her pool to decide from, she was really really upset and dispirited and just not excited about college at all. But she ended up going to the “best” of her targets (which is really a very very good school, she just had bucketed it in a less-than category). And now, halfway through her junior year, she’s so happy. She’s doing some awesome research with a professor, has made some great friends, and feels really good about where she landed.
So all this to say, while I hope you have more good answers in store, if it ends up that you don’t, I’ve got at least one data point of someone who was so disappointed and unhappy at first and has ended up feeling good about her choice.
Aww thanks! That’s a good story to hear.
D25 found out today she is a finalist for a big scholarship ($10,000)! The last step is a virtual ‘casual’ interview next week. She isn’t excited about the interview, but I reminded her that $10,000 is worth 20 minutes of ‘pain’.
Oh Madison. Breaking kids hearts. My daughter feels so bad for her friends. “Im so glad I didnt have a dream school Mom.”
I am so sorry, I see similar thinking with my son, but I have just been focused on the good places he has been accepted while acknowledging that this process sucks and he has every right to be angry over it
We had an unusually good night here. Son received two acceptances that weren’t expected until March, with nice merit included. Then, they found out they received a regional Gold Key for art and a Silver Key for writing from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Their art piece will hang in the Met for two months! National Awards will be announced at the end of March.
WOW!! That’s big news, and worth celebrating. Hope the kiddo takes a moment to be really happy about that!!
Wow, that’s fantastic - the Met! Congratulations!!!
Our school sends via Naviance/Common App - they send to all colleges by default and then whichever colleges want them can download them.
This is what our school does as well.
Was thinking about your son and wondering if he would benefit from reaching out to schools he’s been accepted to with this information about the awards. Use it to see if he can get a bump in his FA. He has nothing to lose. This is a great addition to his profile and he should benefit from this.
That’s a great idea! Thank you!
I would also include it in any LOCI to deferred schools.
100%
We may have all decisions (except a deferral, that I don’t think '25 much cares about) today! wow.
2 are outstanding as of this AM.
- Temple (RD/rolling): now has a decision (kid will open portal when gets home)
- URI (EA): I swear everyone has already heard but my '25, and their admissions social media says by today. '25 emailed AO earlier this week to 100% confirm they weren’t missing any materials (they aren’t) but AO didn’t say when… I am really hoping shows up this afternoon / tonight.
I am impatiently waiting on moving on to decision phase:)
