AP Gov and AP Lit this week. He submitted his AP Drawing portfolio early, so at least one is done.

In college news, S25 found a roommate! They connected in the Conn group chat, and living styles-wise, they seem to be twins. I’m not sure they will become besties, but everything else clicked. Last night, they talked for over two hours, and the kid was so happy afterwards.

In more college news, he got off the waitlist for Syracuse (Maxwell) last night, but he isn’t changing his decision unless Syracuse offers a full ride.

My son also has AP gov and AP lit this week. AP Calc AB next week. A few scholarship applications, some projects, and an early final also in next 2 weeks. I want time to go fast the next 2 weeks and then slow down until August! Good luck to everyone!

Mine has 3 APs this week (chem, compgov, lit) and phyics Mech next. Not even sure what he has for finals, typically they are exempt as seniors with 2 As on his quarter grades.

They are exempt here if they have an A for the year. Due to scheduling issues, he is taking a virtual high school class that has a proctored final without option for exemption. I wish it wasn’t right in the middle of APs. Shouldn’t be a big deal. It will be nice that it will be done early though and he will basically have a study hall/social time in the library during that period. Last day of classes here is May 28 for seniors. Very early for us because school here goes until mid to late June.

Sending out good thoughts for good things to happen with all the exams going on. It’s a rough time for these kids, with tests as well as new expectations for class and housing expectations.

For S25, it’s a doozy: yesterday was the first part of the IB history, today is the second part of IB history and the first part of IB German, and then one part of IB German or IB English on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Next Monday, AP Calc, and next Thursday and Friday IB math. Ugh.

Add in there college placement exams for math, chemistry and writing before May 16 and
phew. It’s a marathon, my friends. Good luck to everyone!!!

S25 is taking AP Chem today. He opted out of the exams for AP Gov and AP Lang, thinking the credits wouldn’t be as useful for those classes. He self studied for both Physics C exams, which are next week. But he hasn’t been hitting the studying super hard for those
he signed up because the credit would have been super useful at a couple of his potential schools, but he doesn’t need it for his major at Rice, so he is just coasting now and isn’t too concerned with how they turn out. His Multivariable Calc final (college class) is next week, and I think that will get most of his study attention. Then he is pretty much coasting to the finish as his school doesn’t do final exams.

In other news, we booked our travel to take S25 to Rice in August!!! We decided to all fly down with him so his younger brothers can see campus as well and say goodbye there. It makes the decision feel much more real having booked flights, car, and hotel in Houston!

Good luck on the AP exams this week! S25 has Chem today and Lit tomorrow followed by Calc AB next week. He actually studied for Chem yesterday, but he said there are some concepts he still feels shaky on. Tonight is the end of the year band awards banquet. S25’s reward is that the band director didn’t strangle him for his squirreliness this year. So I guess that’s a win! Family is arriving on Thursday and Friday for graduation. I’m still in denial that it’s this Saturday. :sob:

Hope everyone has a great week!

Our kids can’t opt out of APs for high school, so even though Lit does absolutely nothing for him in terms of credit, he still has to take the exam, but I’ve told him don’t bother studying.

Please join the Rice parent page on Facebook this summer! It’s a great community and very helpful. There are definite tips you need on how to drop off your kiddo for O-week so you can get the most out of the experience.

Happy AP Season to All! :upside_down_face:

I’m seeing quite a few people here say that their student elected to not take the AP exam for their course. I’m wondering how common that is? Our school requires that any student that enrolls in an AP course must take the end of year AP exam in order to allow the AP course to appear on their transcript and count towards their weighted GPA.

My kiddo is just trying to get through these exams, then she says “it’s all fun and games” until graduation - prom, banquets, awards, and just general celebration until the end

Good luck to everyone testing the next two weeks, and tumbling through the rest of the school year!

I don’t think kids can opt out of AP exams here. The teachers have been having long review sessions and practice tests after school and on weekends so it has been busy. Honestly, I don’t think my kid is too stressed. He chose a school with a pretty open curriculum and he has no intention of graduating early so the APs won’t do much for him. It would be nice if he can get a 4 or 5 on AP calc because it will serve to fulfill a math distribution requirement for the honors program he will do in college. He would like to avoid further math and science except maybe stats again. He likes english and writing and plans to be a poli sci major so the others don’t really matter because he will take those classes for fun. Nice because he can go into the tests without stress, especially because practice tests are predicting 5s anyway.

I have one in public school and one in private. At the public school, students can opt out of taking the AP exam if they wish.

The private school makes students sign in blood that they will take the exam, LOL.

that’s the same here
