It varies I think is the answer! Two kids (both ‘25s, different boarding schools)-
One C25 opted out of the AP exams for the two APs taken this year, the rational was the credit was either unlikely to be accepted (AP Psych) or in the case of AP Macro/Micro, the major was likely to require a similar course, my C25 preferred to re-take course to ensure continuity of following coursework and/or professor.
The other C25 is at a boarding school that does not offer AP courses but the level is such that many students self-study. This C25 is going to take the AP Calc BC exam (? i think lol, that is how self-sufficient this one is
).
Sounds like he made a wonderful choice!! It seemed like that’s how he was leaning in your last post. I think the academic rigor, creativity and overall commitment to quality, and integrity in admissions makes for a special combination that can’t easily be found.
Best of luck to him!
And to us empty nesters!
D25 said the FRQ’s for AP stats were very easy. One more AP to go AP Psych which is the very last AP test, next Friday afternoon.
Aww Hugs my D26 loved AP chem it was her favorite class this year! But it definitely was the only AP I have seen her actually stress a bit over, it sounds like the studying paid off because she came out of the exam confident that she did well!
Just have to share because I know you guys will “get it.”
My daughter is one of those people who holds her cards close to her chest. I’ve had to really try to pay attention to her reactions and to the few clues she has given me regarding colleges and her future.
Well, the A/C on her car went out, and we were talking about summer temps and then how hot it will be in Texas… (we used to live in Texas)…but also how hot it would also be in Arizona or South Carolina.
“I’m happy not to have such cold winters though” she said.
And then, with a huge smile on her face, she said, “no matter the weather, the important thing is that I’m going to the right school for me!” This was said with such joy, confidence, and enthusiasm….so different from her usual approach…my heart has been singing all day!
On the topic of AP Chem. D25 had AP Chem last year and was so happy to get a 3 on the test! She thought she had completely bombed it. She had the same teacher for Honors Chem and then AP Chem. She was one of her favorite high school teachers!
In the you win some, you lose some category: last night D25 received a nice scholarship -
today she got notification that she wasn’t chosen for a different scholarship
I told her any extra $$ we don’t have to pay is a bonus, so don’t worry about the one you didn’t get, just celebrate the one you did get.
So C25’s final grades for the semester were posted overnight last night…
…and the 4.0 survives!![]()
My D25 loves it! She has a crazy mad scientist teacher who is so fun and it is the hardest class she has ever taken, for a C. That is the grade she is proudest of in HS because it required the most effort. She pushed herself and got her grade up after a rocky start. Hoping for that 3 so that her teacher can maintain the existing success rate, not even for herself. She thought the test was difficult but not impossible. Go chem!
D25 found out yesterday that she will be the graduation speaker for her class. She won’t find out if she’s Val or Sal until graduation day! I can’t believe they’re making them wait that long.
D25 said the same about Stats, and also has Psych next week. She is glad to have another week to study for it.
She has Mandarin today and we’re hoping she passes. But if not, I’m very proud that she has taken 5 years of a very difficult language.
Just reading this gave me flashbacks to the 2 move-ins at Texas A&M that I did with my son. 110 degrees and 115 degrees! That was a bit much for this mom from MN!
Grades posted last night here, and S25 managed to get a B+ and the rest A’s. I normally don’t think there is much grade inflation at his school, but these grades lead me to believe the teachers were rather generous to the graduating seniors!
Baccalaureate is tonight at 5:30, and then we’re taking the grandparents out for a nice meal. Tomorrow will be chaotic with graduation starting at 9:30 (with doors opening at 8:00 am), but I am excited to celebrate my sweet boy. Last night it all seemed to hit him, and he looked a little teary eyed. He joined the Rose-Hulman Discord for class of '29 yesterday, and I think he was feeling a little overwhelmed thinking about the reality of leaving home. I am incredibly excited for him, but I will miss this kid so, so much.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
I would have stayed in the AC in the car. No way I was moving things in 115 weather. I’d pass out.
It was challenging. My best bit of advice to all parents moving kids to the south: They need to sign up for the earliest move-in time in the day if at all possible!

My S22 could not understand why I was so insistent about him signing on and getting that slot signed up at the crack of dawn while we were on vacation two hours to the west of his schools time zone. He has no idea what my mood would have been had he had a 3:00 p.m. time slot rather than 8:00 a.m.
smart!! I am so clueless about big schools (I went to a smallish one) I didn’t even know some have move in hours (vs. days) though totally makes sense. Pretty sure 25s lets you pick one of 2 days, but not more specific? I should check!
My kids have zero interest in going to the south or even anywhere warm, 25 is going somewhere colder…27 hates heat more than 25..doubt they’d even consider LA ![]()
This is good advice! My daughter gets to move in earlier than most students so hopefully she will be able to get an early morning time.
I hope your son enjoys Rose. I was very impressed with the campus when I visited with my daughter.
S25 last day of school is today. I knew he had been pretty much checked out and watched the missing assignments pile up but he assured me “I got it” in terms of grades and finals. And while that held true, I can’t help but feel irritated that he ended 2 of his 5 classes with Bs that were less than .5% from getting an A. I know that’s my own issue to deal with, but c’mon!!
Syracuse came through with a shockingly generous offer, but not enough to tip the needle (aka free), so I still have a camel! Relieved because Conn is a much better vibe fit. I think the allure of Maxwell had him just a little tempted, but it all worked out.
Meanwhile, APs and finals are done, and he has very little work until graduation at the end of June. He still has to go to school for three more weeks, but he is doing silly busy schoolwork, watching movies, having an art show, prepping for his prom and his boyfriend’s prom, and launching his prom king campaign. ![]()
Hi guys,
We need help. My son as committed to a university.
His grades are falling from A-/B+ to B-/C in the last two quarters. He has almost all Cs on the 5 AP classes in the last two quarters. Too many APs for him to take (against our advice in the beginning) to be burnt out. There was a week when he got virus and sick.
We the parents are extremely worried that the university can revoke the admission on falling grades. We are encouraging him to do his best, but with less than 3 weeks left, we are not sure he can improve his grades a lot.
The admission letter says “the admission is dependent upon maintaining the academic record and progression when you applied to the University”.
(We don’t know the back-up plan yet)
What do you think how high the risk is?
Thank you.
