I do see one potential meaningful non-academic reason for taking Ancient Texts as scheduled: If a decent chunk of her cohort in her intended major will be taking it as well. Developing an informal network with other students is crazy useful.
But given what I recall about this, that seems unlikely, I think?
If the advisor is thinking this schedule is too much, then itâs probably too much.
It was the marching band piece that stood out to me â I have a kid who marches. Band practice in Waco will be hot and taxing. And itâs never just rehearsals and football games â the band could also be called upon to play at various other things. The commitment might be more than it looks on paper.
Also, I think a Calc support class is a good idea. College calc is way harder than high school calc. About 80% of kids pass the Calc BC exam (and 64% pass the AB exam, not sure which one she took), so if yours struggled, then the support class might be a good call.
Wholeheartedly agree with all of this! (I read your comment to my D.) Especially because math builds upon itself very incrementally, and because there is no real downside to the switch.
It also made me realize that we should request priority registration as one of her accommodations.
We leave next week. I have no idea how many bags we will be taking. I think I ordered 8. We will see this weekend when the kid finishes packing up. Luckily we are only an hour away and have a big truck if needed.
After seeing the dorm in person this summer, plans for what was going to be brought was scaled way back.
My D22 can drive to her school (we are also Midwest). My S25 is going to Rice and has to fly. It is yet to be seen how much space his stuff will take up - we pack on Thursday and fly on Friday! We are pretty sure we will be checking Ikea bags. The advice we have heard is to double them up, nesting one inside the other to create two layers. Apparently this almost always works well!
If stress has the possibility of triggering seizures, I could see making a case for âpriority registration reduces the stress of hoping the classes she needs for her major are still available by the time they get around to whatever order theyâre using this semesterâ.
The type of epilepsy she has means she is more prone to suffering a tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure very early in the morning, or within two hours of waking. The less sleep she gets, the more likely she is to experience a tonic-clonic seizure. Priority registration reduces the chances of having to take early morning and/or late night classes.
Just 24 hours to go before we leave! We still have a few days before we actually drop him off, but the car will be ready to head to the airport by tomorrow morning.
We are going to end up with 3 checked suitcases I think (before shopping on location). He did a terrific job of scaling things back yesterday - taking it from something like 8 different types of jackets to about 4⊠If we find that he needs something, we can ship it. And when it comes to significant winter clothing, heâll be fine until Christmas and can probably bring some stuff home and swap it if he needs to. It helped a lot when we reminded him he just wasnât going to have the space to store it all (or to spill out into our mudroom) like he does nowâŠ
Gearing up for a big shop on Saturday (linens, etc.) and then a really fast move-in on Sunday. We rented a full-size SUV, so fingers crossed we can make it all fit.
I truly am feeling all the feels! I am so excited for him, but I will say the random memories that come up from time to time can be hard. My other two donât start school again for a few weeks, so I think that will help ease some of the feelings of missing my 25.

Something we did when our S22 went off to college, for the folks remaining is âswitch seats at dinnerâ. The first night of sitting down and having the âempty seatâ was a lot of feels, so I proposed we all switch seats and thereâd still be an empty seat but it wouldnât be assigned, so we wouldnât necessarily feel the hole as much. It helped me, and I think no one else minded. (It might have even helped them, but they didnât tell me about it.)
Just got caught up on messages. Canât believe the time is upon (or almost upon) us! S25 finished his summer Calc 2 class on Friday. Ended the class with a 100.37 average. Amazing what he can accomplish with only one class to focus on. (And one in which he has a lot of interest.) We left that afternoon for a quick weekend trip to San Antonio to visit my family. It was a whirlwind, but Iâm so glad that S25 got to see family before he leaves. My 97 year old grandmother is declining rapidly, so this was probably S25âs last time to see her. It was sad but also wonderful to have this time with her.
I feel so behind on the shopping/planning. I work at a newish medical school, and our second class of students started 2 1/2 weeks ago. Iâm staying late almost every night to meet with students and working the next two Saturdays. I really want to spend more time with S25 and have time to plan and pack, but the timing in not great. S25 has been pretty clingy and sweet lately and weâve been watching a lot of movies together at night and on the weekends. I think itâs finally hitting him that heâs leaving. I am cherishing these last few weeks with him!
Sending good thoughts and peace to everyone during this crazy time!
@LatteNights Please let me know how checking the IKEA style duffels goes! We are contemplating using them for C25âs travel to Spain study abroad. There is not enough storage space in her dorm room for any big suitcases, so looking for ideas.
Itâs interesting, I had never heard of this as an accommodation until the psychologist who did my S25âs recent testing mentioned it. He will get extended time in college along with a few other things â he has ADHD and some learning issues, but also a motor skills disorder that makes it really hard to write, open and close things, pack up his backpack quickly, etc.
The doctor explained that priority registration lets you choose classes to leave a free period between them so you can actually use the extended time for testing. (Of course, she said that, and sheâll recommend it in her report, but no guarantee the school will grant it.)
It makes even more sense if youâve got a reason to maximize sleep â I had never thought of it in that context.
We bought our daughter one and some pepper spray. I am not sure how effective the alarm will be or if she will actually carry it. More than anything this gives her dad a little piece on mind. Our daughter is petite and is often mistaken for a middle school aged child. Last weekend I asked for 3 adult tickets to an event and the person at the register reminded me 12 and under was free. She loooked shocked when I told the kid was 18. I feel for the kid. It is demoralizing when she is given the kids menu or a cup with a lid when she is out at restaurants or other spaces.
