At the minimum have scissors that are strong enough to cut through zip ties and plastic packaging. We used screwdrivers too, so one philips and one flathead.
Oh no. That whole experience sounds terrible. I’m sorry.
We had only 1.5 hours at my D22’s move-in because of the way her school does things, but it was highly organized with a whole team unloading the car and bringing in all the stuff, so we were able to spend every minute of that time getting her mostly settled and even hanging stuff on the walls. I would have been distraught otherwise.
We had basically unlimited time with S25 last week after his 11:15am move-in time, although he kicked us out well before the mandatory floor meeting at 7pm, lol.
I hope you were able to read the advice in the Rice parent FB page on O-week drop-off – if at all possible, have your kiddo ride in the passenger seat with the window down, while someone else drives and you ride in the back seat behind the driver with your phone out ready to video.
It’s so, so special, and you will tear up when you look back on it. I still get choked up thinking about my D22’s drop off three years ago!
I’ll second the note about scissors. We also needed a rubber mallet to free the bed frame so we could loft it higher. (Then we bent the bed frame in the process, and used pliers to try to fix it, but that’s a different story.). While we didn’t use the rest of the tools, we left S25 with a wrench, a set of Allen wrenches (aka the ikea tools), a flat head and a Phillips head screw driver, a roll of duct tape, and a pack of zip ties (to attach things to the loft or manage cords or anything else).
We moved S25 in a week ago, and it went pretty smoothly. He had an 11:15am time, and we (my husband and I and both our daughters) finally left at like 6pm, lol. We did run out and grab lunch in the middle of that.
No one seems to be sharing pics here, so I don’t know if we shouldn’t be? But I’ll share. He’s in a single with a private bath – unheard of, I know, but his dorm building actually has quite a few of them. He does not have a housing accommodation – we just reserved the room the very minute housing opened back in October, so he got lucky.
Singles are tiny, but I thought we were able to make it comfortable and functional, regardless! S25 has had a good week – first 48 hours were a little rough because the school didn’t have nearly enough bonding activities, and he was feeling homesick and out of sorts.
But then he met people, classes started, and it’s all good now. (Plus the kid texts me all day – the best of my three at that – so I am doing okay. Although it’s weird not to hear him yelling at his video games upstairs. The house is so quiet.)
That’s a nice room and a promising start to the week! I only have one picture that doesn’t have my kid in it - since he was literally hustling us out of the room I hardly took any, but I asked him to send me one once he put his posters and flag up, so I’ve got that. He’s standing so close when he took the picture that you can’t really see anything else, but here that is.
I am also highly impressed with the texting! I’ve sent a few funny photos from our drive home and gotten no response - not even the thumbs up. He did however text this morning to ask where his allergy meds were (strangely enough, they were in the med kit - who would ever think to look there?)
It looks nice! Mine texted me to make sure he knew the difference between the laundry soap sheets and the dryer sheets.
I would have liked to loft his bed to give him more space underneath, but changing sheets on a low bed is already going to be a challenge – no way would it have happened if the bed were lofted!
Oh fun! I’ve heard from parents group on FB move in is a well oiled organized experience! They actually had an hour call for parents /students (optional of course!) on logistics including an actual sped-up video of where one goes day of drop in- as a planner I loved that
Rooms are not amazing from what I’m told- but now all have a/c at least first years almost all have 1 room doubles and are pretty much same across buildings …
Upper class have apartment housing or live in local apartments that are all (mainly?) RIT students
Best of luck to your new Tiger! I may be picking your brain throughout the year.
I’ve heard the same about the dorms – we may be applying for a housing accommodation for D26 to get a single, but that would mean we have to update her testing before the spring (last did it May 2023), and that is a huge pain/expense. So, we’ll see.
So we bought the fridge, the fans, the air purifier, the fulton… and I am about to buy a rug. And S25 still hasn’t connected with his roommate. T-11 days.
My guy has been sleeping in a loft at home for probably the last 7-8 years, so he’s used to that. No comment on how often the sheets get changed, but we’ll just say I don’t expect it to get any worse…
I wish we had bought a rug. We didn’t, and I didn’t realize how much it would improve the janky look of the old old tile in the floor. When we go down for parents weekend I may see if S25 wants one and buy one for him then.
Well, move-in is done, and it went so smoothly. NC State has very specific instructions for how to approach campus, where to unload, how you need to clear out of the area immediately after unloading, where you’ll be allowed to park, and so on. Everything was so specific that we were expecting total chaos. They give an hour time slot for drop-off. Our slot was at 11am today, so we arrived about 20 minutes early expecting to be at the back of some nightmare dropoff line… nope. We were quickly let through to pull up directly in front of our daughter’s dorm. We had the car unloaded and moved out in under a minute. There were volunteers with wagons helping kids haul their stuff from curb to dorm. It was great!
We spent most of the day with our daughter and I’m glad we did that. She is excited and looking forward to school but also nervous. She has social anxiety so, while she already knows her roommate and that is great, I know this next couple of weeks will be tough for her. We have already promised to come back and visit next weekend. If the next few weeks could please go as smoothly as today, that would be great!
Just a recommendation - Target has ruggable rugs, the tops vecroes to the pad and it is washable! They are on sale right now - I got my daughter one and I think the fact that it is washable and packs up small made it worth the extra cost over a regular rug.
Thanks! Yes, we are prepared for that! I was explaining this to everyone else tonight (siblings came along too), and since our S25 is famously chill, our prediction is everyone else in the car will have a bigger reaction and get more hyped up…but we’ll see i guess! I really should get to sleep but I had a late afternoon coffee to help me power through a trip to the beach, so even though it’s midnight im not that tired. Luckily S25 has what I think is the latest possible move in window (it doesn’t start until 10:15!).
