Just returned from 10 day family vacation at the beach at Kiawah Island (The weather was as expected mid 80s to low 90s most days, with a few brief rainstorms overnight, the beach was beautiful) - D26 had her required 2 day “Pre-View” orientation /registration at University of Florida on days three and four of the trip, so this worked out as we drove from Raleigh to Charleston for vacation, then my wife and D26 did their side quest to UF Gainesville and came back late evening of day 4. This cut around 2 & 1/2 hours out each way of the drive to /from UF.
Random roommate (in the Dorm D26 had marked as third choice) is a Junior “pre-med” with Anthropology / Criminology as actual major and is the head of a couple of UF clubs - so hopefully she’ll be a good resource for D26 to ask questions and give guidance. Apparently this isn’t that unusual at UF, as many of the other entering Freshman at Pre-view had Sophomore roommates and a few others had Juniors.
Met with her student Pre-view advisors and then the actual advisors for both Heavener B-School (Finance w/ Accounting minor) and the College of Journalism (Media Production, Management and Technology) - D26 had actually put in the time to look at the pre-req stacking and integration of a dual major (and AI did a lot of heavy lifting for her review there) - so her course alignment went pretty much as she’d planned for…after some haggling
Of note, her Advisors wanted to sign her up for 12 credit hours only - and told her likely next would be 12-13 hours in semester two as well (told her not to worry because she has plenty of AP credits already) and when she pushed back to say, yes but I plan to dual major which will have required more than just 120 credit hours to do both plus two totally different required stacks -and- I want to get these pre-req classes on my schedule if and when they are open and available instead of pushing them off into an uncertain future and maybe being shut out in some semesters.
Both B-School and CJC advisors said “We recommend Freshman start with fewer hours due to the rigorous nature of UF versus HS” and she returned with, I understand that but I come from a very competitive Magnet HS with 13 AP/IB courses completed, and I’ve discussed this with my older sister who has graduated and my brother who is a junior in college now. The response was more or less “Well, UF’s rigor is no joke, there are no ‘easy’ classes here… what schools were your sister and brother in?”…“University of Texas Austin in GeoScience and UNC-CH in Economics”. Ah, okay then we will sign you up for these 16 hours first semester and -IF- you find yourself struggling, then I recommend you drop either the one course you’re having a significant problem in or this course, because you can pick it up later on…"
Her Senior AP course scores came in the day after UF preview was over and according to the followup from the Advisor she has up to 38 credit hours available depending on how she chooses to progress and apply them. I know this may sound like a lot it’s more than a years worth - but during her UIUC trip, her student guide reported she ‘started’ at Illinois with 61 credit hours, so technically as Junior standing, and was trying to complete a Triple Major with two of them in STEM (I audibly choked on my coffee when she said this but her vibe was definitely no nonsense / all business for most of the half day interaction - and so now D26 is like I ‘only’ have up to 38… ) 
I think I started with 18 or 20 and thought that was pretty solid back in 1989…
Interestingly, two of her six courses have a majority ‘online’ presence - where she can attend in person (and we’ve advised her that’s not ‘optional’ for her the first year) but more than 2/3 of the class generally attend either the live webcast lecture or the recorded online version available later. This was a topic of conversation among many parents at the admitted students weekend - with a lot having more than a little reservation about this aspect of UF in particular. We will see how this goes - but with in room attendance for live lecturer available, I’m optimistic it will work out just fine for D26.
Move In weekend starts August 15th - and just this morning D26 put two and two together over coffee…“Holy Snikies, I leave in less than 6 weeks! I don’t have a lot of time…” and took off back upstairs to look over her dorm room list and packing plan to make the Amazon list to order this week!
So now I’m back to tinkering with our ‘family’ calendar - Trip back to the Midwest to visit my wife’s family in 2 weeks, UNC-CH move in early august, move in UF the next weekend, UF family weekend late September, UNC-CH family weekend mid October… and D22 (UT-A) is waiting on either a rejection or job offer from her final interview with one consulting company, and is mid interview process with three others… while living at home. So all three kids are here in the nest all summer - with the possibility they may all be gone by the third week of August. My wife is vacillating between being ecstatic and worried by the hour!
