Great to hear about the dorm prep underway. D26 hasn’t given a single thought to anything dorm-related, as far as I know. She’s the type to just use whatever is around, so I’m hoping that we can reuse some of D22’s dorm stuff that she won’t need at grad school.
AP scores went pretty well in our household. D29 made a 5 in Human Geo, which won’t help much for college but came as a great relief b/c both of her older sisters also made a 5 in that class. D26 had seven (!) APs this year - three 5s (Music Theory, Art History, Eng Lit), three 4s (Calc AB, Bio, Gov) and a 3 (Econ). The Econ teacher is notoriously awful, and indeed D26 didn’t feel well prepared for that one. But her college only allows up to 18 credit hours for AP, and she now has 30-something, so there will still be plenty of options when it comes time for advising later this summer.
House is full, tonight is the farewell sleepover party. I’d mentioned before how C26’s friend group had kind of fallen apart over the last couple of years, but a number of the kids who had drifted away are here tonight. We ordered in a Mediterranean meal for them, shawarma and falafel etc, now they’re watching a movie and I’m expecting they’ll get to sleep very late, like old times. And it’s really nice and at the same time making me kind of sad and teary as they’ll all be off to different colleges late next month…
This made me laugh. My D22 will forever be salty that she took the APUSH exam at home during Covid and scored a 4 because it was only one short essay, whereas D26 got a 5 on the same exam because it was administered normally when she took it a few years later.
And then, this year D26 scored a 4 on AP Lit, while D22 got a 5 on that one – and D22 poked a little fun at her sister with “back in my day I wrote all those essays LONGHAND and still beat your score.”
Daughter apparently went on Amazon the other day and ordered pretty much everything for her dorm room. The packages keep showing up on our doorstep. So now we have a dorm corner in our basement growing by the second.
Headed to NYC this afternoon for the Bon Jovi show at MSG tomorrow. Was supposed to go to the 2020 show but Covid. This will probably be the last opportunity to see him. I know his voice isn’t what it used to be, but I still can’t wait!!
LOL, one time I ordered so much from Amazon that they left an entire giant bag on our porch with all the boxes in it. My husband will sometimes open our front door and holler for me by saying, “The internet is here!”

I was a crazy Duran Duran fan in middle school – like totally obsessed – but my mom wouldn’t let me go to the Sing Blue Silver tour in 1984 because she said I was too young. (I was 11, so practically an adult, mind you. I’m still mad. )
So the first time I saw all five of them in concert was here in Atlanta in fall 2003, when I was hugely pregnant with D22. It was a little hilarious because MANY of the women in the audience were age 30-ish and visibly pregnant.
I saw them again for my 50th birthday – also here in Atlanta – but without Andy, as he’s been ill.
I saw Duran Duran in concert in the late 90s/early 2000s. It was an awesome concert. I really hope that Depeche Mode tours again some time close to my metro area. I’d love to see them again in concert some day!
We never got international concerts in my home country when I was a teen because of sanctions. And when sanctions lifted, they were few and far between at first. Like, you might get 1-2 international acts a year you wanted to see. I’ve made up for lost time since I moved here by seeing all the aging rockers and people I wanted to see back then when they tour now!!!I never thought I’d see a day when there were just too many concerts to go to all of them, but that’s where I am now haha.
Good news: the hold on D26’s account has now cleared so there won’t be any delays to her financial aid getting distributed on time 2 wk before start of classes. The portal no longer says that they’re awaiting her final high school transcript. So glad that speed bump is over!
Ouch - longhand! D22 and D26 haven’t really been outwardly competitive with each other, as they have different personalities and interests (and ended up with almost identical GPAs and test scores). But D29 is very conscious of their success and worries about being considered the “dumb sister,” which is silly. She’s likely to outdo them both in the end - she has fewer health concerns than D22 and a stronger work ethic than D26. Her GPA after 9th grade is ahead of their pace, and unlike D22/D26, I think she will be in the mix for valedictorian down the road. (Which doesn’t really matter, as I’m always pointing out to her, but I think she is on a mission.)
D19 and C26 have never really had any sibling rivalry, partly I think because of the age difference, and I’ve never picked up even a joking rivalry over academics. They are both good at English and VPA subjects but yin and yang elsewhere, so there’s never really been any competition. D19 did brilliantly on history/social sciences but was mostly a solid B math student, did not do calculus and dropped physics like a hot potato after a week in favor of APES (physics wasn’t required when D19 was at the school, but is now) whereas math and stem come so easily to C26 - but history is their Achilles heel. And D19 was truly thrilled for C26 with their national merit recognition (D19 did not do well at all on the PSAT!).

One of the most fun concerts I ever went to was NKOTB in like 2016. Mostly because it was a bunch of older ladies and those guys totally understood the assignment. They were making fun of themselves and the fact that we were all there reliving the good ole days. And then Joey walked right by me with no shirt on and touched my arm. However, I went to work the next day and literally couldn’t hear anything all day. That’s how I knew I was officially old, lol.
I was 16 when NKOTB got huge, so I think I just missed the age window for the fandom, lol. Plus I was working at Spencer’s at the mall (remember that crazy store?), and we sold so much NKOTB merch, but all the girls that bought it were like 12 or 13, and I considered myself waaay cooler than them.
But I would totally enjoy a concert if only for nostalgic purposes!
I had a bunch of dental stuff happening in 2013 (surgeries, etc) – and I loved my oral surgeon’s nurse. I distinctly remember her lamenting that her stepdaughter had ceased to function as a human because she was so obsessed with One Direction. She must not have been that kid when she was young, because she didn’t believe me when I told her it would pass, lol.
I’m just not with you guys lol. My teen years were totally into what we called alternative /indie (uk music) back then and what would I guess be called goth now. So after a stint with Adam and the Ants, which were my first big big fan band, I was fully into stuff like (early, pre-widespread success) U2, the cure, echo and the bunnymen, the cult, etc, ska (the specials, the beat, aka the English beat here), and the British synth wave of Depeche Mode, heaven 17, human league etc. Duran Duran was acceptable. NKOTB totally was not (my husband calls me a music snob but then i also love the nostalgic music from my very young years, like Neil diamond and The Bee Gees, that no music snob would admit to lol). And as alluded to above, the first time I saw many of these bands in concert was after I moved here.
D19 was into OneDirection for a hot minute. Then Justin Bieber came to town and we had to go and had the cap etc etc and 6 months later…oh he’s passe.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I still am, haha. And my kids know all the music.
I’m going to see Squeeze in a couple of months’ time and very excited about that. I did catch them here pre-covid and it was an awesome concert. They don’t really slot into a genre but were very much part of my 80s music journey. And Adam Ant is playing too..it will be the first time I actually get to see my tween idol.
