While slowly scooter-ing/walking back to the parking garage yesterday after the honors village open house, we walked past this one student who had ear buds in his ears and was reading a book WHILE WALKING back to the honors dorm. I thought, “That dorm will be full of D26’s people.” 
D26 noticed how the frat houses “look a lot dumpier than the sorority houses.”
She also commented about the “sad & lonely single Domino’s Pizza all on its own” right next to campus. I told her that particular Domino’s probably makes a killing. 
Right across the street from the honors dorm is an off-campus apartment complex that’s popular for upperclassmen honors students to live in after being in the dorms. It’s got a good reputation for being well maintained and the rent apparently isn’t “that bad” for the local market, so I’m tucking that away in my head just in case for future years.

Haha! This is how I felt when our tour guide at WPI told us about the store he goes to on Friday nights to trade Pokemon cards.

So a surprising update from D26 BFF and her Dream School acceptance last week…she has decided to stick with the school she committed to and say no to Dream School! We are in shock but also love that she truly thought about it. D26 said BFF told her that after much research she realized that alternate school has everything Dream School has and she doesn’t feel the need to change her mind anymore- she is genuinely excited about option B.

D26 is in the middle of prom planning drama too. All the seniors go to a local community center that looks like an old mansion for pictures so that’s a no- brainer. It’s the seating at the prom tables that is causing the anxiety but I think she has it worked out.

Ugh. C26’s school didn’t do this. They just let the kids get food and sit wherever they wanted at a variety of spots around the venue. Glad she has it worked out!
One mom is hosting pictures and dinner at her house (for $85 per person) – and the whole class is invited. Problem is, none of the kids D26 would want to take pictures with are going to it. When my D22 had senior prom, the whole class gathered for pictures, and then smaller groups split off and had dinner on their own, which worked out fine. (There is no dinner at prom.) I know the mom is just trying to make it welcoming for everyone, but I can’t control what all the kids decide to do.
And then, D26 is peripherally friends with one group, but they are pretty cliquey and don’t include her in things. So she arranged to take pictures and have dinner with three other people, nice kids she’s known for a long time, and with whom she had a ton of fun at homecoming last fall. But THEN, one of those kids arranged to meet up with aforementioned cliquey group for pictures and dinner. He did text D26 to ask her if she was okay with it, and she said, sure.
I’m just holding my breath hoping it all goes smoothly. Like if someone is making a large dinner reservation (they’re planning to go to a fancy seafood/sushi place), will there be a seat for my kid? I can feel my brain cells leaking out my ears as I fret about this, but she’s been burned before – I just want my kiddo to feel included and have a good time. (She’s not super social, is kinda awkward, and is pretty terrible about initiating any of this, so she tends to get left out a lot. Most of the time it doesn’t bother her, but it bothers ME.)
This is why I mentioned that I won’t miss this aspect of high school!

is that normal for your area? Here we usually just have one person in the friend group hosting with some snacks. I don’t think anyone would think of charging…
Hope the dinner stuff all works out. High school can be horrible.

I was thinking the same thing. Sounds really strange. Here, people pick a place to take pictures and then go to a restaurant

Our proms always have dinner so no one needs to go out to eat first - pics usually just in someone’s back yard (lots of greenery around here so usually lots of nice options even if it’s not a “destination”)
Yes. Think fancy McMansion back yard with a tent and lights and posh catered dinner with place settings and table decorations for 120 people – like a wedding.
It’s that kind of school. I have sooo many stories. I can’t WAIT to be done, lol.
D26 and her small group, on the other hand, were originally planning to don gowns and tuxes and go out for Mexican food or pizza.

I would prefer that! Our prom is on campus, with a band or DJ and some snacks/drinks, but no dinner. In the past they’ve put up a tent on the quad, but everything is decorated really nicely – the prom committee works on it all year. Also, there are no tickets – it’s “free with tuition” as we like to say about many things, LOL.

Exactly why I didnt want my kids to go to a really small cliquey liberal arts school where 30-40% of the kids are athletes and they dominate the social scene.

I bow down to you for this visit! It sounds like it was fantastic, despite the hiccups. Shame on people for not offering a seat to your daughter! Seriously. That is so unkind. Glad to hear that all went well!

YAY!!! I grew up in one of the suburbs there. It’s a fantastic place and SU has so much school spirit. Huge congrats!
