Parents of the HS Class of 2026 (Part 2)

My school got everything back up and running -so my students are okay. Hope that other schools are resolved too!

My son’s school uses it as well -and he has a project due today! But I think it is back up for him.

I don’t think my school automatically backs stuff up.

Hmm.. food for thought. Thanks!

We’re back up too!

Catching up!

D26’s school uses the Google suite for everything so they weren’t impacted.

S23 will still be home so no empty nest for me! But he’s pretty self-sufficient and a built in dog sitter, so that’s definitely a plus.

Not sure how much travel we’ll do, but hopefully we’ll get away to our NYC apartment on the weekends more often.

Prom is tomorrow- D26 was already so nervous about everything and now her girlfriend told her that she’s moving away after graduation. (She isn’t going to college so she would have stayed here when D26 went to Ithaca.) They were going to try and make things work, but it’s going to be harder now because it’s about double the distance.

D26 just received some surprise college news: an acceptance at U of Michigan Nursing (off the waitlist). Too busy with middle child’s graduation weekend to think about it now. Have 2 weeks to decide.

I suspect C26 never got around to declining the colleges they weren’t going to, because I just got an email from UMN that included this:

While the priority confirmation deadline was May 1, we continue to accept confirmations on a space-available basis. Encourage your student to reserve their spot as a Golden Gopher as soon as possible.

D26 told me the other day that she couldn’t actually decline Pitt because in the intervening months, they had required a password change, which she couldn’t make work because the password requirements were too onerous. She gave up trying to change the password and just left it be. Some colleges don’t make it easy!

I would just send an email to admissions and be done with it.

My D26 saw that too. However, in her emails, she found two from Pitt with links to accepting or denying the admission decision. This worked without her having to change her password.

The email looked like this:

My daughter just clicked on “I do not intend to enroll at Pitt.” After filling out that form, she was directed to another page to cancel her application. We received a confirmation from Pitt within a couple of days.

I just asked her to look for that one and she didn’t find one like that! Everything was a link that says “Commit to Pitt”.

S26 graduated tonight! He and his friends are off partying now. At least half of his friend group are heading to the same university as him. I’m curious to see how that will work out.

We will also be empty nesters in the fall. Since I have been the proverbial soccer mom for the last 15 years, it will be quite an adjustment.

As senior year is coming to an end, I wanted to post a few threads that folks may want to post on while details remain relatively fresh.

And for the schools you or your students found particularly compelling that fall into these admit ranges (a great place to expound on the schools that got away, too):

I already posted our Boulder impressions in the appropriate thread there, definitely some sadness in letting that one go after it being #1 on the list for so long and us all having loved the school after our visit there. Pretty sure C26 would have applied ED there if it had been offered, and not looked back simply because they wouldn’t have compared it to anything else. So I don’t think there would have been regrets if that had been the case but ultimately happy the way it turned out, even though things got a bit stressful along the way! The Ralphie stuffie is still happily displayed (albeit at this stage a bit drowned out by the orange, lol)

Happy Mother’s Day to all! I know this can be a day that can also bring up a lot of emotions for various reasons (myself included) so hoping everyone can spend the day in a way that brings them some happiness. :bouquet:

Happy Mother’s day to all the moms in this group!

Over the past week or so since D26 made her decision, I’ve had an awkwardness come up for me in the post decision era that I hadn’t planned for, but think I’ve worked through.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to gracefully navigate people’s opinions on the sticker price of my D26’s LAC. Many folks have no idea what the school is. Those who do, frequently bring up how expensive it is. I get conflicted on how to respond. On the one hand, as many of you here know, we are in the fortunate position that we can afford it. But, I don’t really want to tell people that as that raises its own awkwardness and discloses a piece of our finances I do not want to. On the other hand, D26 got significant merit money from the school even though that was not a factor in our decision of where she could attend. Ultimately, I’ve been responding with something along the lines of “well, we’re lucky because she got significant merit scholarship money from them, so we aren’t paying that full price.” That answer is not false, and seems to navigate the situation best for me. But, it feels a little disengenuous when I say it, like I’m subtlely implying that’s why she’s able to go there.

That’s just tacky. I can’t imagine that being my response to someone telling me where their kid is going for college. Honestly, I’d just ignore that and move on to the next subject. You don’t need to explain yourself. You definitely don’t need to be graceful towards someone who isn’t!

This has come up a few times in some unexpected places. I’ve decided my new response will be, “I guess I just love my kid a lot,” and we’ll see how THAT goes over!
