Parents of the HS Class of 2026

Wait, do the ED1 decisions roll out slowly?

Since you’re on a deadline to hear back before responding to UL, I would totally not be chilling or trusting the process, lol! Maybe ask her to contact them on Monday (instead of waiting the week) and just confirm her application was indeed converted to ED1? It’s justified if you’re still seeing EA in the portal!

Historically- (from past CC threads and Reddit posts) it appears that they release in batches (for all decisions ED, EA and RD). Looks like they are doing that this year also from the little that I have seen so far.

Oy. That is going to make me crazy come end of January, lol!

For EA at RIT, I looked at last year’s thread. Apparently last year was the first year they did EA, so the process may still be slightly in flux. EA decisions last year were released in a few batches, but all within the last week of January.

One poster said they had converted to ED during the wait, and then received their decision right away, so they thought perhaps decisions were made earlier and just not released right away.

It makes sense, since for schools that have both ED and EA, I’m guessing that they don’t want to release EA too early… making EA folks wait longer might increase the number of people who convert to ED.

One big perk of applying ED to RIT is housing priority, because they assign a time slot to choose housing based on when you put down an enrollment deposit.

It sounds silly, but I really think my D26’s decision – if she gets into her three or four top choices – will come down to whether she needs a marching band in college to be happy.

Not silly at all. My D says she needs a video game orchestra.

By the time the decisions come in, I expect her priorities will have shifted again… I do not know what the #1 must-have things will be by then.

RIT has one of the best video game orchestras! Huge draw for my kid, too. Just saying.

Can I just say how much I hate when schools do this … it really prejudices those who need to compare aid packages (who are often the people least able to lose a deposit)

I’m with you. Anything that gives schools the power and forces students to make decisions before they reasonably can rubs me the wrong way.

I totally agree. The whole process is really pretty anti-student and pro colleges making as much money as possible and it’s obnoxious.

My S26 did ED0 and got accepted. He probably would have been accepted to any school. But UChicago is his dream school. The Summer Program wasn’t that expensive. And it gave him an opportunity to get a feel for the school. The only people who are mad about ED0 are people who think college admission is a competition. It’s not. It’s about finding the right school. UChicago sets it up to match kids with merit and desire. The Summer Program is also very generous with fin aid, and actively recruits kids from rural areas. If you think ED0 is a racket, I’ve got news for you about Legacy, Donors, Z-Lists, and Feeder Prep Schools.

I’ve been pretty clear in various posts that I don’t care at all about my kids attending high ranked colleges. NONE of the 4 schools my D26 applied to are elite institutions and D24 isn’t attending one either. Both of them are attending/will attend colleges that are good fits for them.

I’m just tired of D26 getting stupid stuff in the mail from Univ of Chicago where they make it sound like she’d be a contender for admissions and she’s clearly not.

Oh and by the way, not everybody can afford ANY cost of a summer program…and some of those people would NOT qualify for aid for it.

In case anyone needs this, you can “ignore” users on this website and never see a post from them again. I’ve found it to be particularly useful when there are just posters that I don’t want to hear from.

Another thing that works is flagging to bring to the mods’ attention. Sometimes it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it. To that end, a couple of posts have been edited by the mods to comply with Forum Rules and locked to prevent user edit.

Your kid and my kids like totally different flavors of ice cream. That’s awesome that your kid got admitted to his dream school. All of our kids will have good experiences at the various colleges they’re attending.

I don’t care one bit about Univ of Chicago’s ED0 thing. For people who can take advantage of it? Great! Go for it.

I feel the same way about legacy admissions, too. Same applies to preferential treatment in admissions for athletes. If you can use it, go for it.

For D19, we were happy that ED was an option at her dream school. As immigrants we have no legacy, but she’s not first gen. Not LI. Not an athlete. I do recognize that it disadvantages students who need to compare aid.

I think maybe you missed some context of the ED0 discussion – the topic was brought up on a well-regarded college podcast that many people on this thread listen to, so we were discussing it here.

And that discussion came on the heels of the member you responded to saying she was tired of UChicago’s uber-aggressive marketing to her kid, who had zero interest in the school and was not the type of student that UChicago typically admits.

I see you’ve only posted one time previously on this forum to announce your kid’s college acceptance – so, weird that you came out swinging without reading the room.

Congrats to your kid for getting into his dream school! Please understand that the rest of us are free to discuss that school’s marketing tactics – it is not a reproach of you or your kid.

D24 flew home last night for Thanksgiving break. It’s nice to have both of my kids back under the same roof for a little bit!

Earlier today, I listened to that YCBK podcast episode somebody mentioned a couple of days ago…the episode where they were interviewing that RIT cybersecurity major. That was really interesting to listen to! I took a couple of notes from that re: Intro/starter cybersecurity certifications. Gonna pass the info along to D26. That RIT student mentioned a couple of certs that U of A’s cyber Operations major advisor talked about when D26 & I attended an info session last school year on a college tour day. But the RIT student mentioned another cert I hadn’t heard about before.

Fingers crossed to all of your kids who are awaiting RIT decisions!

Interesting choice on how to engage here. The only people? A quick review of this thread would show this is simply not true of many (if not most) of the folks criticizing ED0 on this thread. Frankly, such a statement on this thread makes you not look credible, so I won’t engage with the rest of your unfounded assertions.

That said, I will address the part that should have been the focus of your post. Congratulations on your kid getting into UChicago, their dream school! It is a fantastic school, with wonderful students. Folks here aren’t mad about your kid getting in. We love to see it. You may be mistaking this space for somewhere else where you hang out more. This is not that place. Hope you join us in supporting one another in this community.
