Parents of the HS Class of 2026

I stand by my statement. But again, congratulations to your kid!

But isn’t what matters MORE is that your kid got into his dream school? He got accepted to the #1 school on his list! That’s awesome!

Who CARES what everybody else thinks?

Just like…who cares that my neighbor down the street thinks that my D24 is going to a loser junky school that isn’t very good? My neighbor’s opinion of where my kid goes to college is none of my business. My neighbor’s opinion of that college is not something to take personally.

…just like if some people don’t care for Univ of Chicago for various reasons, it’s not a personal attack on you, your son, or your family. Will your kid get a great education there? YES! Will other people’s kids get great educations at other institutions that they choose to attend? Yes.

Did your kid find the right college for him AND he got accepted to it? YES! That’s ALL that matters. Celebrate that.

Early-Early Decision is just another route for schools and students to match up. There are other programs which match up high school juniors to guaranteed admissions spots. Athletics does this with some kids and verbal non-binding commitments quite early. Other schools have summer programs for some industry/study major fields (science, business) etc, and it’s as much a recruiting tool for them as it is for the kids to see that school and put yet another notch on their application resume (most of the summer programs are pricey for those who can pay, but I understand there are often offers available to those who can’t).

There are, of course, the arguments that ED0 is utilized to manipulate the numerical data used for school rankings (yield) and that it is a ā€˜pay to play’ to get access to the school ahead of those who can’t. My guess is many of those schools could probably afford to just zero that out for all students, but I also would hazard a guess that by making (some) students and parents have to pay Thousands to attend it, it increases the likelihood that the student is interested in -that- school rather than just putting another resume builder on their application for interest in other schools (who knows).

The ED process is also a yield booster, but since it’s generally not directly associated with a ā€˜enroll/pay’ to access possible admissions process, it just seems more palatable to many folks. I get that as well. And many people like the ED process because it can give a more rapid response to applicants and reduce the need (and stress) for multiple other applications for some kids, while messaging others to move their focus on to other schools.

I interpreted these as opinions. You may not agree with someone else’s opinions but that doesn’t mean they are ā€˜baseless’. From your posts, it sure sounds like University of Chicago is a good match for you, and your child. That’s great. Good luck to both of you.

After many months of not posting, I figured I’d jump back in for a bit.

Congratulations to those who’ve received acceptances so far!

I see RIT made the cut for some. That one is close to where I live and can share info about the area if anyone has questions. I know information is available at our fingertips so you may already know what you need to know.

Our D26 applied EA in September to 4 state schools. It initially came down to her only wanting to apply to two schools. We were able to talk it through and convince her that two additional safety schools wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Thus far, two acceptances have been received, one of which is her second choice. They accepted her into the Honors College with merit. The other was one of the safeties who also offered her honors and merit.

She’s waiting on her top pick at this point but is very content with the decision going in either direction knowing she’s landed in choice two. Not expecting a decision until after the first of the year.

We are sort of hoping she also picks her second choice due to slightly easier commute for us (1.5 hours by car) in time of need (underlying medical issues), however the decision will be hers. Should she get accepted and select choice one, it’ll tag on another 1.5 hours for us should we ever need to get there. Of course, those commute times factor in perfect driving conditions. If it’s snowy, it could double the drive times for both.

We’re not expecting much in terms of merit so that really isn’t a factor in any decision. However, we are greatly appreciative of what has been offered so far.

Anyways, congratulations to all so far and I’m sure there’s many more great stories to come.

Happy Holidays to those that celebrate.

Congratulations to your D26! Sounds like a fantastic spot to be in!

My kiddo is one who has RIT among her top choices. She applied EA so we should find out end of January. I don’t even know what to ask, lol. We’re from the south, so if she gets in and decides to go, my biggest questions will be about how to navigate the weather – especially if she eventually ends up having a car there.

I’m replying to an old post -but my daughter got emails saying there was an update on her portal. About a day later - I got emails saying she got admitted. But these are all safeties/rolling admissions so far.

What do y’all have going on for Thanksgiving week?

Weird transition weekend here – D26 is in DC for the weekend on a school band/chorus trip. They’re hitting monuments and museums, saw the Navy band perform, and tonight they’re going to see Hadestown, which she’s excited about. She’ll be home tomorrow night.

S25 is home for the week, but he’s been having some painful health issues, and it’s been a lot of doctor’s appointments and figuring things out. He may need a minor surgery, but one step at a time. It’s been a mostly good semester for him – he’s learning to adult far better than we hoped – but it’s not been without bumps. It’s sooo good to have him home and lay eyes on him and get to mom in person.

D22 flies in Tuesday night. I wish all schools would give the whole week off, but alas.

It will just be our family of five home for Thanksgiving, and I’m looking forward to it. I usually put each kid in charge of making one dish.

We might be doing some Stranger Things binge-watching if S25 convinces his sisters. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Sounds fun! Hope your S25’s health issues get sorted out quickly.

Our thanksgiving ā€œtraditionā€ as immigrants without family around is generally to go away somewhere. This year we’re headed for the Caribbean (our first time there) & looking forward to (mostly lazy) sunny days. D19 will fly from NY to meet us there so it will be wonderful to have the whole family together again for the first time in months.

You are now attempting to reframe your post as nuanced and reflective, when in truth it was a glib remark that implied students admitted through ED0 are somehow less worthy. Children read this forum. Consider how you would feel if someone publicly suggested that your proudest achievement was the product of a dishonest scheme.

Many of you seem focused on the sharpness of my tone—that sharpness was intentional. If you wish to criticize the school or its admissions practices, do so directly. But do not make unfounded claims that needlessly undermine and hurt the feelings of students.

This is a thoughtful and respectful response. I appreciate that. But I was not replying to a thoughtful and respectful argument about admissions. I was replying to a glib remark that implied students admitted through ED0 are somehow less worthy. Children read this forum. Consider how you would feel if someone publicly suggested that your proudest achievement was the product of a dishonest scheme.

And it is baseless. UChicago has publicly stated that attendance at the Summer Program does not give students a boost in admissions. There is no evidence to dispute that. If you think otherwise, great. But it’s still baseless.

Mellow Thanksgiving day with just immediate family here. D26 will spend significant time this week on supplemental essays for RD while also spending some quality time with friends. I’m hoping that we go see Wicked at some point this Holiday. We will also have some get togethers with friends over the long holiday weekend.

I am not sure of your purpose with these post.

There are only @ 10 post on this subject and that was over a month ago.

It was a passing conversation brought up from a pod cast that was ā€˜briefly’ discussed.

I just went back to read through it and I am not seeing the same thing you are.
I do not see any hate or diminishing talk about the families or students who are taking this approach.
There is even mention from some during that conversation that they would utilize it also if their student’s top choice did such a thing.

Here is even one post that sums up the over feel of ED0 during that conversation:

I personally think most of the college application process is a racket!!! I really can’t stand the ED process at all- but my D26 is doing it because it is working in her favor and that is how the system is set up. And though I dislike that colleges use this (and many other aspects that they utilize) - I do not think that it reflects poorly on those that take advantage of pathways available to them, nor do I think that it lessens the student accomplishments.

Again- I am not getting the same thing from that ā€˜passing’ conversation that you seem to be getting from it.

Have the confidence in you and your child’s choice. It worked out greatly for y’all and that is what is important.

D26 has a junior & senior high picnic at a park near school on Tues. then her Thanksgiving break starts on Wed.

D24 flew in on Fri night. It’s great to have her home for a week.

Spouse’s aunt and uncle are supposed to arrive by RV Wed night. We are taking bets on how late they will be. They never show up on time to anything.

Husband and wife friends of ours from Southern CA are driving her early on Thurs and spending several days at our house. Wife doesn’t get off work until 6 pm on Wed. On that day of the year, her 45 min commute home turns into a 1.5 hr drive. This couple are like an extra aunt and uncle to my kids so we are all thrilled to get to see them in a few days.

I so love the fact that I see myself quoted for legit purposes, and all I can focus on is my incorrect grammar. :man_facepalming::grimacing::joy:

We have no plans for this week.
D26 has the whole week off- but both Hubby and S20 do not.

So our plans are to do a whole lot of nothing!!!

Wishing your S25 quickly recovered health!!!
Has to be good to have him back in person! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

This is so funny. Hubby and I just discussed this this morning. Him and D26 have seen it already- I have not. So they want to binge watch this with me this week so we can all be caught up to start the new season.

So I guess I kind of do have plans :innocent:

It took me a good 10-15 minutes to catch up on 120 new posts here! haha!

Congrats to those who got acceptances recently! I do not have access to any portals or emails. I get my heads up on all the parent groups and make S26 check his emails/portals haha!

So we went to S26’s first Admitted Students Day yesterday. Small school, around 2200 students. A hidden gem, IMO, because of how generous they are. Their acceptance rate is around 75-79%? Anyways, S26 LOVES their Creative Writing Program, their Publishing & Editing Major, and their Honors Program. So many resources and opportunities! I can see him thriving there and getting involved in a lot of activities. It’s hard not to seriously consider this school especially since S got a $52K merit/grant and may end up getting more (COA will put it at $28K ā€œonly.ā€). BUT he’s not too excited about the food, and how small and remote campus is. We told him to keep it as an option and decide later. Thankfully, IF this is the only school he gets into, he said he wouldn’t mind going. We will see!

S26 is having marching band withdrawals still and misses it, but great news - he got nominated by his counselor for a full tuition & fees scholarship for one of our in-state schools! Funny part is he hasn’t submitted his RD app yet to that school. lol!

His next wave of decisions come mid-December for another safety school, then a bunch of other safeties in January, his target schools in February, then RD decisions in March. This is a long wait, you guys!
