PBS Call the Midwife

I saved it for last night and it was a perfect NYE watch for me. I don’t make NY resolutions anymore, but try to find nuggets to guide my life and I absolutely loved it when Sister Monica Joan told Valerie that the hands of the Almighty are so often to be found at the ends of our arms.

As always, some of the stories are so cold and hard, yet this show tells them with such gentleness and compassion. Sister Julienne’s ability to bring closure and reconciliation between the mother and daughter was so touching.

I hope that wasn’t the last of Barbara and Tom. I would miss them if they were gone for good. I’m still missing Jenny, Cynthia, Chummy, & Sgt. Noakes.

We got back from being away for 2 weeks at about 2 this morning and when I read this thread this morning I was sad I’d missed the Christmas special. Happily the DVR had recorded it and I just watched it. Lovely. I especially enjoyed the milk bottle part of the story - the milkman is such a quintessential part of English life - it brought back happy memories.

@SOSConcern, the first season or two of “Call the Midwife” followed the author’s story fairly closely, as I recall, but from there it branched off into new story lines with new characters as the original cast came and went. Although the “author” remains the “narrator” of the series, I think that’s solely for continuity’s sake. I don’t think the creators had any idea how popular and long-lived the show would turn out to be and that singular voice ties the various seasons together.

Not sure how far back you can go on the PBS site, but if you’re a Passport member (belonging to your local PBS affiliate should give you access), you may be able to get more content.

I just finished binge watching on Netflix. I’m so glad I gave it another try! Someone mentioned in a post from last May about the diaphragm richoting, but I don’t recall seeing that. I remember Barbara receiving it, but that’s all.

So, if we don’t get PBS, I’m assuming that It will play on Comcast when it airs? Also, what is the Xmas Special everyone is talking about? I can’t find that On Demand, perhaps it’s just not out yet.

I have to say I really miss Chummy. Wonderful show!

You should be able to find the Christmas episode online at your local PBS station (or just google another PBS station). It was a nice story.

I don’t think it will show up on Netflix for a few more months, when last year’s season is released.

Thanks! I found it on youtube. I think I’ll watch it tomorrow! I also have to say I love Vanessa Redgrave’s narration.

Happy to report a new season begins on Sunday, March 25th at 8ET/7CT. Can’t wait!

I had no idea. Thanks for the heads-up!

Yay! It popped up on my DVR’s scheduled shows, apparently still programmed in from last year.

I just set TV to record. Thx for reminder, one of my favorite shows

Just checked and mine also still scheduled from last season.

I googled a couple of weeks ago to see when it would be starting up again and ran right into a spoiler. Wish I hadn’t seen that.

Ooh - thanks for the heads up. need to check if my DVR has that in it’s little memory.

I was able to watch season 7 while it was being broadcast in Britain using tvcatchup. This was a good season and I won’t spoil anything except to say, as usual when watching Call The Midwife, keep your box of tissues handy…

ETA: This season there are 8 episodes versus 9 in previous seasons and then a Christmas special.

@SyrAlum - I looked up tvcatchup and wow, looks like a great resource. Can you tell me which channel offers Call the Midwife? I poked around on the site but couldn’t find that show.

@bookreader Call the Midwife is on PBS. You can watch previous seasons on Netflix.

Thanks @bouders . I have seen the previous seasons. I was hoping to watch this new season on tvcatchup in case Netflix doesn’t carry the new season.

I always watch the current season of Call the Midwife either when it’s broadcast on our local PBS station or, more often, streaming on the PBS website.

@Bookreader, I have caught episodes when I’ve been in London. I think BBC1. I hope @SyrAlum pops back to confirm or correct. I also would like to use tvcatchup. I’ve been disappointed to find that I can’t access PBS shows when I’m in Asia. Maybe tvcatchup can keep me on top of things!

@Bookreader @Momofadult I’m here! Just trying to get caught up with household stuff…

I like tvcatchup - https://tvcatchup.com/ - it’s a way to watch British television shows in real-time. A friend told me about it last year and I used it to watch season 3 of Poldark last summer and then season 7 of Call the Midwife just recently. I love PBS but there is often a six month lag between when shows air in the UK and when they air here in the States and I’m impatient. Also, PBS sometimes chops a few minutes out of each episode to fit within their hour timeframe and I prefer to watch the episodes uncut. Unfortunately, they don’t store episodes like Netflix so you have to be available to watch when the episode is airing. Needless to say, you need to be aware of the time difference between the UK and where you live. I’m on the West Coast so I was able to watch Call the Midwife at 1pm on Sundays on BBC One (8pm in the UK). That worked for me as I’m usually out with my walking group on Sunday mornings but at home in the afternoon. Hope this helps!

ETA: It looks like Poldark season 4 will be airing in early summer on BBC One - mark your calendars!
