PBS Call the Midwife

Thankfully my local PBS affiliate sent out a reminder about the special or else I would have missed it again this year. Not sure why these Christmas Specials aren’t picked up on the DVR. I’ve had the show set to record since the first season, but I almost always miss these.

Was a little sad Chummy didn’t appear at all this season. I thought I’d read she was scheduled to return for the Christmas Special, but I guess her schedule never opened up.

Apparently Dame Harriet Walter has a major role in the upcoming season.

For those who missed it (like me! That was Christmas dinnertime), as @2VU0609 mentioned above, you can watch online. Here’s a link: http://www.pbs.org/video/2365911729/

Thank you @doschicos for posting this link!!! I really wanted to watch it but completely forgot about it on Christmas day. I’m really not used to remembering to watch something on TV at a certain time anymore.

Thanks for the link. I just watched. What a great episode.

@techmom99 and others: If you have Amazon Prime it looks as though the series is available there. I missed the entire last season.

Seasons 1 through 5 are on Netflix. I just binge watched seasons 4 and 5 and then 1 through 3 again. Tonight I found the Christmas 2016 special on pbs.org. The link is in #161. It’s only available until January 24. The Christmas episode was especially heartwarming.

This article on Dame Harriett Walter also says that Miranda Hart, who plays Chummy, is returning to the show in 2017: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2016-07-28/dame-harriet-walter-joins-call-the-midwife-as-sister-ursula

Call The Midwife is back on Sunday on PBS.

I caught a couple episodes on a recent London trip - it’s as good as ever. Can’t wait!

I visited London’s Dockland Museum at Canary Wharf on that trip. While enjoying the “Call the Midwife” ambiance of the area, another American approached me. Assuming I was a Brit, she asked if “we” liked “Call the Midwife” as much as it was enjoyed in the US. It was fun to straighten out the confusion.

(For anyone interested, Dockland’s Museum is worth a trip for anyone who has seen London’s main sights already. “Call the Midwife” was actually filmed at a wharf museum area in Kent, but I didn’t know that until I researched; it looked the same as old Poplar by the Musuem.)

Looking forward to it, plus Chummy’s possible return next season.

The new (and last) season of Home Fires, which isn’t as good but I watch anyway, is on right after Call the Midwife.

Was it me, or were things just too tense in last night’s episode? I wish they hadn’t introduced Ursula into the mix.

Ursula to me seems a needless wrench throw into the plot. Perhaps we will discover a reason for her.

Sr. Ursula’s a piece of work, and I’d like to know what Sr. Julianne did for the Motherhouse to want Sr. Ursula take over.

Do not like the Ursula turn. : (

I’m hoping she’s short-lived plot device and she’ll be sent to an order in Siberia, and Nonnatus house will rescue the telly.

My reaction to Sister Ursula was “Slytherin!” And how cold was it of the Mother Superior to tell Sister Julienne OVER THE PHONE that she had been demoted?

Thank you all for alerting me that the new season has started! What would I do without CC!

I will confess that a while ago I found Call the Midwife (and Home Fires) on Simply June and binged watched both seasons.

^Same here. And I’ll add that PBS sometimes cuts about 5 minutes out of every show in order to get it in under one hour. I prefer watching on Simply June because I can watch the uncut episodes and I can watch on the BBC or ITV schedule. For example, Poldark Season 3 will be airing in June!

I’m interested in where Shelaigh’s pregnancy story line will go. It kind of bothers me, as an adult adoptee, that television often has women who adopt because of infertility become miraculously pregnant soon after. Many people think that all a couple has to do is adopt and abracadabra, the wife gets pregnant and they end up getting what they really wanted to begin with. It seldom works that way. To many of us it’s a reaffirmation of our “second choice” status.
