(Banff was an answer in today’s mini crossword puzzle game today, too.)
There’s always something interesting to see at Cabrillo. Today it was Team Navy for the Armed Forces Triathlon, out for a photo op with Naval Base North Island as a backdrop. Amusingly to all, a Coast Guard helicopter flew by at one point while they were posing.
So, not the greatest photos, but I thought they were apropos for this crowd.
I just returned from an Alaskan cruise and took a “26 glacier” excursion out of Whittier, AK (named for John Greenleaf Whittier). The highlight was a trip up College Fjord, where an expedition in the 1890s (the Harriman Expedition) discovered this fjord and named all the glaciers after both the men’s and women’s colleges of New England. (Our tour guide said they were the expedition attendees’ alma maters but I’m not finding that supported online).
Anyway, here is a map of the fjord, a photo of Harvard Glacier (which calved while we were there), and a soda with ice that the crew scooped up near Harvard Glacier, cleaned up, and offered to the passengers (just because I thought it was fun – they also had glacier margaritas and plain ice water as well).
That is so beautiful!
Sooooo adorable!!
I’m currently vacationing in Spain and thought the coloring of my nephew’s cat was really unusual. He’s a beauty!
Outdoor terrace at the new Terminal 1 at the San Diego Airport. We went to an open house yesterday morning; very well organized process once you made it to the parking garage (3 hours comped). Everything shiny and new - huge TSA and security area, concourse is open and bright, lots of comfortable seating, and the food venues were giving out free samples.
I was especially impressed that every sink in the bathroom has soap and water dispensers - and a hand dryer.
@Marilyn - H and I also went to tour the new terminal 1 yesterday! While it is all shiny and new we both thought it is a very bland and uninspired space. There was no artwork on the walls that represent San Diego. So many other airports that we have gone through at least have something that represents the city itself. The one thing we thought they did right is the outdoor seating area.
I am not a fan of the hand dryers by the sink.
We expected more artwork but maybe that’s still to come. Opening up to the outdoors was very San Diegan! Certainly many of the food venues were local, although husband noted that there didn’t seem to be food services at the far ends of the concourse. So lots of walking.
The metal art piece over the TSA line up area is supposed to represent Torrey Pine trees, but I guess you had to know that. There was a painting and some surfboards, but I think they were temporary. The video corner by the exit from the concourse had a couple of nice scenes. And there was the jellyfish outside. There was a bas relief that I think was from the old terminal on the wall as you went down an exit escalator. But it was beige and the wall was beige so easy to miss.
I liked the hand dryer at the sink because then you don’t have to deal with your carryon luggage with wet hands while moving (and maybe waiting) for a dryer.
We seldom fly and when we do, it’s Alaska, never Southwest. So this was our only chance to see it.
Workers are there because husband had just knocked the boards over getting ready for his picture.
Yup, I saw all of the above, but still think they can do a better job of making this be more “San Diego.” For all of the money and time they have spent building this it just is bland to me.
We fly a lot, but usually not out of terminal 1.
@mikemac , where is that stained glass located? Gorgeous!
I think that’s the Tiffany dome at the Chicago Cultural Center.
It was designed by Louis C. Tiffany and is in what was the Marshall Field’s department store at the time (now Macy’s). I went on a tour with the Chicago Architecture Center and our guide took us into the building to see it.
Chicago is a beautiful city (and it’s still Marshall Field’s to me and apparently the picture’s own id) but they just kept having winter every year and after 40 years it was enough.
