Amazing sky in San Diego last night.
Love all the photos!
Guess what? Rocks!
Thes first two came from the Serape Jasper rock in the third and fourth pics. Those are the end cut and one is a cut (sawn) side and the other is the rough side. The slab I cut from it was a narrow piece so I thought I’d see what happened if I included the bluish area with the spiky inclusions. I really thought that material would be soft or fragile.
Here are a few more. I get really excited when I end up with cabochons that are interesting, colorful, with cool patterns, and minor flaws. The last one is a crazy lace agate and it’s a pretty big piece. My last three batches of those types of rocks were utter trash - just a lot of soft matrix material and fractured agate. One batch looked like the material had been through an earthquake at some point because it was just pieces all crunched up and cemented together with the banding all askew. So I was so happy with that red piece! The others are Serape Jasper, Desert Landscape Jasper, and Siam Agate.
So beautiful! I collected rocks as a kid. Then I figured out a lot of the pretty rocks I bought were colored with artificial dye. What the heck? I love your work. ![]()
Yes, I’ve gotten some good stuff (along with the bad crazy lace) lately that I just looked at and thought this had to have been made in a lab. But it’s real, and natural rock.
Two more just because I like the weird name. It’s Prudent Man agate. “The stone gets its unusual name from a piece of mining humor. The original claim was declared invalid under the “Prudent Man” clause of the U.S. 1874 mining law, which required that a prudent person must be able to make a living working the claim.”
Supposedly it’s rare and highly prized, but I got the slab for $4 on eBay. It wasn’t a great specimen, and these are the two not so striking cabs I made from it.
A few pics from our road trip through Italy. Started in Emilia-Romagna, working our way south. Currently in Puglia. Heading towards Naples tomorrow.
Keep the photos coming, I want to live vicariously through you!
If you have a chance I highly recommend Pizzeria Trianon which dates back to the 1920s in Naples. Wonderful pizza!
Ooh, thank you! Will check it out.
Let me know if you have any other reccs for Naples. We are only there a couple of days but besides a couple hours at Herculaneum don’t have any set plans.
That might be the cutest baby I’ve ever seen
Sorry, I don’t. We only spent an afternoon in Naples since we were staying in Sorrento so took the train up. We went to the archeological museum and had the pizza. Naples was an interesting city to visit, my thoughts were with the street vendors and so on that it was like stepping into an old photo of New York from the 1910s or so (minus the horses). Enjoy your visit!
The poor sailors probably could have gotten home sooner but they’re scheduled to dock at noon tomorrow.
