Please test the Forum Index page

I like it  Thanks for listening to feedback.

After the redesign, it was so hard to find (and then re-find) Engineering Forums that I had to create a bookmark to there. And Parent Cafe too. If users need to make multiple bookmarks to same site that does mean navigations challenges!

Note that CC for me is non-essential. The kids graduated from college years ago. So only view it laptop or chromebook (and once in a while ipad)… never on my phone.

I would offer that if old threads aren’t hurting anyone. I don’t see the need to remove them.

Old threads are closed every six months. That has really helped reduce the amount of spam.

Some old threads have timeless advice (it’s fine if they are closed). Maybe the most valuable thing I did early on was to go back and read literally every thread in the Athletic Recruiting forum that applied to my son’s situation. I concede I can get a little OCD about research:-)

A lot of boards have a system where a brand new poster’s first post or brand new poster starting a thread has to get approved by a moderator. That gets rid of all spam.

Closing old threads isn’t necessarily bad, imo, except for that fact the search function on this board is such a disaster. I can usually remember around the time a thread was active and search by going back a zillion pages in a forum, but not always. And then there is the problem of closing those threads (like Passover recipes) for instance in which there are many threads on the same topic because every old one was closed.

That’s a great idea but wow, there are a LOT of new posters. You really would need a dedicated moderator to wade through all of them. There IS a spam filter that works pretty well - it gets rid of a lot of posts so we don’t have to deal with them. There is also a filter that holds back any post with a filtered word in it. That has helped tremendously.

@MaineLonghorn

I think the review is done by an administrator. There is something in the software that knows to tag new poster/new thread by unknown poster. They go into a folder (probably not the correct word ) for review by admin.

My tennis forum has thousand and thousands of posters from all over the world. It was instituted after the forum had been inundated with spam threads. A lot were in Chinese so a filter likely wouldn’t work for that.

A little OT, but I like the algorithm used for the “Recent Activity” section (for me located just below the Reply box.) It often brings me to threads that I might not otherwise have seen but that are on topics of interest to me. I think it’s something to keep.

The only time the closed thread thing has annoyed me is for the CC Bookclub, sometimes I come across somenthing years later about a book or author that we have read. It would be more sensible to put it in the original thread, but you can’t.

^Yes, it’s not perfect. It’s just difficult when people post in very old threads to spam or rant. Sometimes, those old threads have blatant TOS violations and then we would have to deal with reports on a thread that was ten years old!

Why are some words allowed to be posted but replaced by *** but others cause the attempted post to be blackholed?

It is also in many cases unobvious what words in the attempted post caused it to be blackholed.

I think, over time, mods learn something about our personalities via what we choose to write and how.

We often “are what we write.” Just something to think about.

And some of it is possibly aitomated.

I don’t think we’re supposed to critique mods. Delete this if you wish. I just wanted to point out we all need to mind our choices.

I do not like the idea of closing a thread and then starting a new one that is just an extension of the old one. Just went to the COVID thread which I couldn’t find, so looked by using one of my old posts… then had to get to the end of the old one only to discover its closed and I have to go to a new place. Too many steps. Do not like this- its just as much of a pain as the current way we have to go about finding threads. This IMO pours salt in the wound.

I’d rather have threads consolidated early than have to figure which of 5 or so I mean to get to.

Yes, you can read a closed thread, if it’s not deleted. Yes, you could ask for a solo one to be reopened, if there’s a good case for it. Or maybe it’s better to refresh and start anew. Depends on that real life reason. Yes, there are some the process missed and 18 months later, some kid decides his thoughts are so vital. Or add his predictions or well wishes.

Even after the OP has gotten admitted or not. Lol, it takes some work to make CC work for you…without being obsessed with it.

And why are we limite to seeing only the last 10 likes, or agrees, or helpfuls? Its nice to be able to see, but if there are more than 10 you can’t tell who posted the others. Can you expand that?

Nice to see the index on the forums homepage!

So sorry if not the right place but did some major change just happen to the forum? Took me awhile just to get back here. Had to log in. Picked go to forum which usually brings me to latest post then I go there and read the latest post. That is gone until I made it back to the Cafe… Hmm

@CCadmin_Jon is it possible to add the little bookmark at the top of the forum index page? Right now, to get to my bookmarks, I need to first go to one of the forums…which is doable…but just an additional step.

@knowstuff a couple of days ago, the change was made…when you hit “go to forums” you get the forum index. From there, just click on any forum, and the highlights come up…and those include “latest post”

I just recognized that it’s under the “more discussions” with the down arrows its right there but Thx. I just hate extra clicks. It would be nice just to have it under the go to forums button. Nice, clean and quick.

Thx

Not a fan of this format. Go to internships and the first one or do is from 2010… Hmmm… Anyway I usually just go through the new posts and then to the Michigan thread with a bookmark on my phone.

Wait, I just noticed the “forum index” on the right, under “Highlights.” Is this what is being asked about? I never click on that. I am hoping “majors” will again figure prominently in a list of forums, maybe under the Highlights too.
