Poldark!

I decided to jump ahead on the series and am now binge watching. swoon No . . . Ross does not disappoint at all.

Demelza looks a lot older than 13, good to know so I can have a frame of reference. But I’m half watching the show, the other half playing backgammon.

I liked the last episode though it is essentially romantic claptrap obviously not written in the era.

Hey! There’s nothing wrong with a little romantic claptrap. It’s the tv chick-flick version of a summer beach read. :x

Hey my husband was watching it. Not a chick- flick for him, rather it’s a chuck-flick!

Yeah, there’s plenty of fighting and hot girls.

Demelza looks to be in her late 20’s

and explosions . . .

Possible spoiler ahead.

I don’t really think this is a spoiler but I wanted to give a warning just in case.

In the “Next on Poldark” previews at the end, they showed what appeared to be Ross and Demelza in an embrace, as a “couple.” In the books, does Ross really hook up with a 13 year old?! I know that girls married young back then but goodness. I did notice that Demelza has a totally flat chest and wondered if they would have her “blossom” over time. But seriously, if they had cast a 13-14 year old actress to play Demelza, who then is locked in Ross’ embrace, I don’t think most of us would want to watch.

In the original she was not presented as a young teen either. She never “blossomed” then and does not in the remake. She does wear some tighter corsets on occasion that feature her assets. At any rate, whatever the book say (I read them a million years ago but forget the details) neither TV production present her as being that young either overtly or implied.

In the book, he hires her as a 13 year old in 1783, then the book skips to 1785 then 1787. It sounds like the TV show blurs (or maybe compresses) this time line a bit.

Oh no, is he going to be married now. That’s just too quick, I thought it would take a little longer.
It seems like the young girl tricked him into marriage.

We’ll, her father was coming for her in the morning.

As @MomofJandL noted, the time line has been compressed for this production. I’ve got to watch my step here as I went ahead and binge watched all 8 so as not to be up too late on Sundays.

I’ve become intrigued by the similarities of Jud and Purdie to the Thenardiers. Someone upthread mentioned playing a drinking game when the characters went all broody, but those folks are a constant drinking game  Summer tv is generally so disappointing and Poldark has been a welcome relief.

I’ve never read the books, but the old series has a very different story line as to how Ross and Demelza marry.

I have some vague recollection that he got drunk, slept with her–she was in love with him, but not the reverse–and that perhaps she was pregnant and so he married her???

SPOILER:

not pregnant ahead of time although alcohol was involved

see . . . drunk sex even then but they don’t regret it

Yep, Consolation. That’s how I remember it, except Demelza took off without telling him she was pregnant precisely because she didn’t want him to marry her just because he felt he had to.
