oops - I guess I’m wrong. Well, they played it differently this time then.
Unless, of course, I can no longer remember back to last week which I guess is a possibility
I guess I will just have to watch it over again! snap!
Ross can scythe my field anytime.
I watched the first series long ago and loved it. I remember him meeting Demelza later and it taking longer for them to get together, but I might be misremembering that. I also thought Elizabeth had married Warleggan. Maybe the cousin she married was just as forgetable as this one is? I remember Judd vividly - this new one is not nearly as scruffy and gross!
I’ve only watched the first new episode but I’m glad to see the actress playing Demelza. She was just heartbreaking in the series The White Queen. Elizabeth is fresh and lovely, and Ross, oh my God…
I think his scar looks more like a drip of charcoal than a scar though. Has Robin Ellis showed up yet? I heard he would play a minister.
I remember it taking longer for them to get together as well but I was just a kid when it was first on so my sense of time might not be all that accurate. On Elizabeth . . . you’ll have to wait until next season.
I looked online and the old series had 29 episodes over 2 seasons. We only get 16! Too bad.
I think Ross’ scar looks like his mascara is running. But other than that, he’s pretty pleasing to the eye.
I read that the author of the books was very upset at the portrayal of Demelza in the first series. I guess (I don’t remember this part) that she was portrayed as sort of a tramp and the author had based the Demelza character in part on his wife.
I also heard that there was a remake in the '90’s that upset people so much that something called the Poldark Appreciation Society took to the streets, in 18th century dress, and protested. The series was cancelled. The Society still exists and doesn’t like the leading actor apparently (or didn’t before the show was broadcast).
I keep thinking he’d be perfect as Heathcliff.
How can you not like the actor? Is that even possible?
Finally caught up to all three episodes. For completely prurient reasons, I wish this were broadcast on Starz instead of PBS!
Also, I think Elizabeth and her comment about cornflowers in was meant to throw some shade at Demelza. Hah, did it work?
There was a hilarious quote in the 2nd episode. Jane ? and her mother were visiting Poldark (and trying to capture his interest) and the mother said something about Jane “making the most delightful and succulent syllabub”. Hilarious!
I’ve been approved! I am now a member of the Poldark Appreciation Society. Lots of tidbits on their fb site, here is the latest:
The BBC will film “And Then there were None” (Agatha Christie) and our Poldark actor will be in it. Aidan Turner.
Also, Robin Ellis, the original Poldark, played the part of the frosty old judge in episode #3.
@greenwitch - I remember being very taken aback by the way Demelza was portrayed in the first series. I had read all the books and loved them. I seem to remember the TV series portraying her as almost a young prostitute. I understand changes have to be made sometimes when a book is made into a film or a TV series, but never could fathom the reason for them doing that.
Yes, I remember her offering herself to Ross when he brings her home and he’s horrified. She is quite a street urchin, in a way that would be more appropriate to London than to Cornwall. I may have to read all those books! I hear they’re very good and go on for the children and grandchildren.
Apparently there is a Poldark Ale, brewed in Cornwall, that can be found around Britain.
I don’t like that, why do they twist the original story of the book. I was wondering why there were comments that refer to someone as such( young prostitude) but I didn’t pay 100% to the show, so I was not sure who they were referring to.
@DrGoogle, that was in the first series, back in the 1970’s. It didn’t happen in this one although it is clear that the gossipy townspeople wonder if anything is “going on” between Ross and Demelza.
I think there were two older men made that comment when I watched, something like wrong company or wrong crowd or questionable crowd.
Ok, if I had been playing the drinking game tonight I would have died of alcohol poisoning!
