Porn advertising on College Confidential?

Thank you previous poster. I value CC and would hate to see it lose its integrity.

Actually I have not noticed such adds on CC. Could be I am so used to such stuff appearing (how sad a statement is that) that I just block it out and don’t notice it.But I have not noticed it.

If it is the case I completely agree that it is inapropriate.

I haven’t seen those types of ads ever. If they are appearing on CC, I completely agree with the OP.

I have not seen those ads, either. I know next-to-nothing about computers, but wonder if you unknowingly have some sort of virus or “anti-filter” (for lack of a better word) on your computer.

I have an ad blocker, so I don’t see any of those ads, but most ads on websites are not run by the actual website, but rather by some kind of external ad provider. I’d bet a fair bit that the ad wasn’t run by the board administrators, and in most ad systems the website admins on whose website the ads are have some kind of mechanism to report questionable ads, which I hope they will use.

I’ll move this to the Community & Forum Issues Forum. I suspect that the problem is that some strange program has inserted itself on your computer. The CC-hosted ads that I have ever seen are very closely related to the issue of college admission and college planning.

This was the first time I had seen these ads on CC and I was flabbergasted. I took the time to write the ad content on paper so I could properly describe the ads to the website administrators. The Angelina Jolie banner ad was also on the forum login gateway page, not the home page as I wrote above.

I just logged out, closed my browser, re-opened Firefox and entered the site in the same manner. This time the banner ad did not appear, but in place of the ad to the left of the description of Dave Berry’s services there was a 404 message, which means that the image (ad) did not load. If you look carefully, you can see where each piece of information is coming from when you load a page.

Many of the sponsor ads on CC actually come from other sites, e.g., Google Ad Services. The ad content is maintained on another company’s site and the CC page simply refers your browser to that site to get the ad content. In that manner the ad companies can rotate the ads since many of the ads only pay for the display when someone clicks on them to go to their site.

Perhaps someone is messing with the ads on the hosting site and the CC administrators are unaware of what is being displayed sometimes.

In any event, I made the post above to get their attention so they could have their IT personnel look into the matter if they didn’t authorize the display of the content I saw.

*Porn advertising on College Confidential
I hope the CC moderators will permit this thread to remain in the Parents Forum.

I am not a prude by any means, but over the past week I have observed more pornography ads being displayed on websites where one would think they would be unwelcome by the website administrators. College Confidential caters to a large member base comprised mostly of teenagers under 18, so why would someone want to advertise pornography sites that require one to be over 18 to enter?

The banner ad at the top of the CC home page stated “Angelina Jolie Sex Scene.” The smaller text described the content as “nasty sex scene,” and “this dirty girl gets dirtier in this raunchy sex scene.” From that description I would imagine it would be X rated, requiring one to be 18 or over in order to view the content.*

You may want to dump your cookies/ pref files.

I have noticed that when I am on various websites- including CC- the ads that pop up are triggered by other sites I have recently visited.
When on CC the ads are for Ross Univ Medical school-Kaplan University, fight meningitis, Chase bank education loans…

When on other websites, the ads are triggered by my city or other details- but while occasionally I have noticed a thread posted by a bot/spam, I haven’t noticed a problem with the ads.

I have been paying attention since you started the thread - all the adds I get on CC are Kaplan, student loans - that sort of thing. I do have a pop up blocker though. And I use firefox which seems to let in fewer nasties.

Oh just noticed your post#8 and you have firefox also. Have you tried clearing your cookies and temp internet files as EmeralK suggests in case something is lurking there? I have not seen anything other than college related adds.

While I haven’t gotten the ads, there have been occasional posts with dozens of links to porn sites within one post. I’ve reported them immediately, and they’ve been gone quickly.

I have never seen such adverts on this site, although if they did exist then yes I would be highly disappointed since this is essentially an academically oriented site and is targeted (in part) towards minors.

However, I would say that the problem might actually be with your computer and not the site. If someone using that computer has been visiting some sleazy websites or has clicked on a link in a spam e-mail then quite often you can have a ‘virus,’ spyware or adware that would hijack normal adverts and replace them with the things you’ve described. So first I’d check your computer and find out what others who have access to it have been up too…

Also, it could be an issue with the advert hosting site if CC outsources that to a third party…

I just wanted to add that one of the kids that posts on the prep school forum also reported seeing the same ads (I have not seen them) – so I don’t necessarily think it is the OP’s cookies or what not.

you aren’t the only one seeing those ads: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/community-forum-issues/469201-porn-advertising-college-confidential.html#post1059885486

Threads merged to Community & Forum Issues Forum, with redirects from original forums of posting. This sounds very much to me like a few personal computers have been infected with software that spoofs ads.

i agree with tokenadult. I go on CC a LOT lately (boredom, curiosity, etc etc) and I’m one of those people who can see those m’s in the group of n’s in those chain mails we get (just thought you’d like to know that :P)

but I haven’t seen any of those. maybe it’s because firefox, or at least the one I’m using, blocked out the popups? but the ads are all safe. most of them are advertisements for certain universities, and right now its “advertising” the director of counseling and senior counselor on the left side of this forum.

but if those ads did come out, I’d probably quit CC or go on maybe once a couple weeks or something. It’s just so over-the-top that it goes to the point where it’s just disgusting and you can’t stand trying not to look at it because in the corner of your eye you feel this irritation that you can’t get rid of. a couple sites i used to go on frequently were sites I quit because of those kind s of risque ads. then again, i’m probably overreacting haha

I don’t think its firefox. The ads are displayed by google and google tends to display ad in relation to the content of the page.
