You’ve been missed @thumper1 - what a long ordeal, I’m so sorry!
We are on day 4 of no power, no water, no wifi or cable. Swam in our pool for the first few days but now it’s been without circulation and chlorine, so… tonight we are heating water on the gas cooktop and sponge bathing. So much fun. We’ve lost 3 days of work. As with @thumper1 we are supposed to be back before Tuesday at midnight. Crossing my fingers we are back up before then.
Just got our cell service back yesterday. Still no power. Sitting in the car a lot charging my phone.
Our power is back as of 9 p.m.! Days earlier than expected!
My husband wanted to get a generator after the horrible October storm of 2011 (we were without power for 8 days) and I didn’t think we needed it. I guess in my old age I don’t want to deal with it any more and we’ve started the ball rolling to purchase one (called our electrician). Supposedly our house is already wired for one which will save us money.
We are in a lake community in northern NJ.
Our home and immediate street lost power for a only a few minutes the day of the storm, feel so very fortunate.
But the other streets ringing the lake are a seemingly random patchwork of lit and dark homes.
So many trees down including one in our back yard that thankfully fell shy of our deck and roof.
We have friends a few blocks away expecting their first baby any day. They’ve been told next tuesday before power is likely restored.
We have a telephone pole and wires drooping into the street a block up. No repair work yet. Just a blockade and detour into our usually little travelled street.
Scary to see drivers speeding through amid kids on bikes and walkers.
I feel for those of you still without power. I remember how awful it was when we lived in Ct and lost power for 7 days during the Oct. snowstorm. Eversource, our electric co, kept pushing back when power would be restored. Apparently they learned nothing from that experience.
Eversource is the worst. We only lost power for 2 and 1/2 days during Sandy. Now we are 5 days in. Eversource is saying we should have estimated restore time this afternoon.
That October snowstorm was what pushed us over the edge and into buying a generator. Or maybe it was the late August hurricane the year before or after that. The dates are fuzzy, but we had two or three storms that caused us between 5-9 days of no power each time. We finally decided we needed a generator to live in the woods of CT! We were lucky this time and only without power for two days, cellular for another two days. There are still so many homes in town without power and numerous roads still blocked with fallen trees/wires.
I believe the August hurricane was Irene, and it was only 2 months before the Oct. snowstorm. Fortunately, we didn’t lose power during Irene, but made up for it during the snowstorm. And we lived in a suburban subdivision with underground wiring. Of course, the lines into the subdivision were above ground.
In 1973, Atlanta had an ice storm that left much of the city without power for a week. After a couple of days, my father moved us to a motel that had power; while I don’t remember why, my guess is my high maintenance mother complained about the lack of power
Once our neighborhood was back up, dad realized we had a down line to our house, and GA Power was not interested in working on individual homes. Their priority was entire neighborhoods. At that time, we still had power companies from neighboring states here. My dad, who was in the gourmet food and liquor business, took a case of liquor where he saw some trucks from out of state working. He showed the guys what he had and said, “If you follow me home and get my power restored, this is yours.” We had power that afternoon!
Everyone is calling our power company “Neversource” now…
I remember this well as we were trying to sell my dad’s house (the house I grew up in) and it sustained damage from the storm. Had to get the estimates from insurance agents whe were brought in from out of state. I even offered to let the out of town person doing the estimate on my late dad’s house stay there! Then, once they finally got the repairs done to the house, the October /Halloween snowstorm hit! What a mess!
@snowball, great story!
Still no power or internet or landline. But we have cell service. Big tree was cleared from the power line near us about noon. Neversource estimates our whole town to be restored be 6 am Tuesday.
I sure hope it’s sooner.
We have a generator as do almost all our neighbors. At least we have water, fridge and some lights.
I was away and missed all the drama including two huge trees from my neighbor that landed in my yard. My neighbor acted fast and got them cleared this morning. The trees also knocked the utility pole breaking it in half. The tree company did not clear the utility pole. Who clears that? The township? Electric company?
I’m in CT – about an hour and a half south of @thumper1 – and it’s been really really bad. We lost power Tuesday at around 2:30 PM and got it back Thursday at 9:15 PM. We are lucky to live on a relatively main road. But 22% of the houses in my town will be out until Tuesday at midnight, they say, and in the town next door, where we lived for 25 years, they say that 81% of households are STILL without power and won’t be back until Tuesday midnight.
This is really really bad.
We are also 6 am Tuesday. I pray sooner. Our generator (which just handles fridge & freezer) just died. H is trying to fix it now. Thankfully (and miraculously??) our pool chlorine level is still perfect, so at least we can kinda sorta bathe. We are still in an area with a lot of trees sitting on lines.
We live near Hartford, CT, and fortunately we are out of town for the summer. My husband drove home yesterday to check on the house and do some yard cleanup, as we have many downed limbs. Fortunately we have no property damage, and it appears we never lost power on our block based upon his conversations with neighbors (and the clock on the kitchen stove).
Sadly, we have many friends and neighbors who were not so fortunate. Many are still without power, have had to throw lots of food away, and are dealing with property damage. Most are saying the estimates are Tuesday for power to return. It’s nuts. Last summer we were in the same boat when a tornado hit my mom’s town where we live in the summer, and we were just happy that we weren’t dealing with cold weather at the same time. My thoughts are with all of you in the NE dealing with this!
@thumper1 : “Neversource” – ha ha. (It’s Eversource, for those of you who aren’t from here.) Good one.
My friends in my home town still don’t have power. The estimate is by days end Tuesday! That is just ridiculous. I can’t image what would have happened if it had been a stronger storm.
