Prep Schools In The News & Media

Damn, they closed the Misc. Life Ramblings thread?!?

Anyway, am in the middle of reading this piece, and thought I’d share it here. Mostly about college, but you know how these things are.

Hoping all is well with you all.

Great to see you here again, @SevenDad. There was a thread dedicated to that article a while back on the main board.

I didn’t see that the Misc Life Ramblings thread had been close (BOO!), but it sadly lost traction and seemed to die after that last post in May of '24. You need to start a new one. Ha! Or maybe we should start a Where Are They Now thread to see if we could lure back any of the old crowd. This forum is nowhere near as active as it used to be. I guess we’ve all moved on.

I’ve reopened the thread. We finally got old threads closed. It’s easier for me to reopen a thread as needed than to closed thousands.

Good to see you back.

Seems like a bad idea to target the “Boarding School Industry” in CT with removal of housing related tax exemptions. These schools more than likely provide economic and perhaps social benefits to their respective communities (directly and indirectly).

I grew up in a town with a BS, it was always a point of contention that the school bought up housing and didn’t pay taxes. There was a tacit agreement where school could and couldn’t buy houses. Most teachers had kids in local K-8 so were using plenty of resources etc.

I do think the school added value to the town (and certainly the state - no hotels in the town), but I don’t think many residents (voters) get that and I’m not sure net…

Same with universities, it’s complex.

Also as a taxpayer one could also consider that choate could probably charge 2x as much and still fill up (and give same amount of aid) and pay taxes.

I don’t think that is wise for a lot of reasons but may seem like a progressive tax

This has become a bone of contention in Greenwich as well. Between Brunswick, Greenwich Academy, Greenwich Country Day and Sacred Heart, you have a lot or real estate and housing needs. Anything in close proximity to their campuses tends to get snapped up. Brunswick’s purchase of the former Tudor Investments campus was an extreme example.

Update on Miss Hall’s below.

As a side note, I’m really surprised that this behavior was allowed up until 2010; I would have thought that it was stamped out long ago. Have there been any more recent cases that have come to light? Or have recent cultural changes, like MeToo, made administrators much more aware of the need to shut down any inappropriate relationships?

"Fares, who graduated from Miss Hall’s in 2010, alleges in her lawsuit that “Virden frequently hosted students in her room for sleepovers,” and that faculty were allowed to “visit students at their homes and stay overnight.”

While some staff members mentioned in the article named in an updated lawsuit, such as Jeannie Norris (former Head of School), Sarah Virden (former Dean of Students), and Jenny Chandler (former Dean of Academics), no longer work at Miss Hall’s, Kim Boland (Director of DEI) and Julia Heaton (Head of School), remain on staff.

According to the Vanity Fair article, in 2022, Head of School Julia Heaton was told by an Alumnae Council representative of prominent teacher Matt Rutledge’s alleged sexual relationships with multiple students. It was an open topic of discussion at the 2022 reunion. Yet a full year later, he was still teaching at Miss Hall’s.

Vanity Fair quotes the victim, Melissa Fares, “recalling admissions director Kim Boland giving her a peculiar admonishment when she drove off-campus with him in the van: “Be a good girl for Mr. Rutledge.” (Boland did not respond to questions sent to Miss Hall’s School.)”

How are Heaton and Boland still at Miss Hall’s? What is the school’s board doing? How could so many staff members allow such an unsafe environment to persist for so many years, and as recent as 2023?
