Products you've recently discovered that you can't now live without

Snowdog–I don’t keep my pictures in dropbox. I’d be nice, but I’m cheap. I just use the free version; with add-ons, I’ve got about 5 gb. I use this for word documents for my own writing work and for the work I do for the classes I teach. I have a lot of free space, and will off-load old things should it be necessary.

Edit: have used 143 MB. should be good for a while. :)

Edit again: was surprised how high. I had put a short movie on. that’s 117 of the MB’s. That explains it!

Also, in response to your other questions, SD, I have 2 desktops and a laptop that are hooked up. (I live between 2 different places.) I don’t have an iPad or other tablet or smartphone.

I also access it at the colleges I work at online to get needed docs.

Garland–I agree completely that documents consume very little space on Dropbox. I keep uploading hundreds of photos at a time for short stints. Easy to take them down once the invitees no longer need access. I have found it a very useful way to store the iMovie projects though as people seem to look for them periodically.

NYMomof2: I have the Garmin S1 Approach

KINDLE PAPERWHITE.

I don’t know if it’s something I truly can’t live without, but it has had a huge impact on my life.

Ever since I was little, even though I always loved to learn (truly loved school and educational programs, etc.) and my parents were really avid readers, I was never big on reading. It seems like a contradiction, but that’s how it was from my childhood all through my 20’s. Then, I started traveling, and I enjoyed having a book on the plane. Because I was not a big reader, I never even thought of getting a Kindle, but I decided it would be nice to have a Kindle for my few trips, so I asked for one (and got it) for my birthday.

I don’t know what it is about this thing, but it just makes me want to read like nothing else before! I have read more in the past month that I have owned it than I have in the past several years! I’ve read on a tablet before, and that just doesn’t do it for me. I have clearly been exposed to books… But there is just something about this device.

It’s everything from the way it feels and looks to the features (time left in chapter, instant access to books, never being without a book) that just makes me want to keep using it! Also, the light is amazing! My apartment has fairly poor lighting (when it comes to reading), and I don’t have to sit under a lamp or strain to see and make my eyesight even worse.

I myself am quite amazed at this turn of events! We’ll see how long this infatuation  lasts, but right now it’s my favorite gadget!

Method spray cleaner. Doesn’t leave a sheen on the quartz countertops.

It’s interesting how many people would list the same 5 or 6 things. That is information of value and it shows how difficult it is to formulate products that sell.

Each of these products fits a niche in our lives that we didn’t realize was there or which we presumed was filled well enough by existing products. Take SodaStream. People used to get seltzer delivered - and we have old empty glass bottles in the basement. That was displaced by the growth of bottled then canned sodas. Even back in the 60’s, you had to hunt down a vending machine; they weren’t ubiquitous and every corner didn’t have a 7/11 or equivalent and gas stations generally didn’t sell anything other than gas. Would SodaStream work today if not for waste-consciousness and maybe diet consciousness, referring to both calories and chemicals? Soda is cheap on sale and it’s pretty easy to consume.

We’ve all seen Star Trek so we know what an iPad looks like. I never believed it would be so incredibly useful. Or that apps in general would so swiftly address the kind of focused problems which for some reason didn’t fit the older idea of “applications”. I can imagine an app to do a few things but I intentionally limit the number of applications on my laptop or desktop computer. Who knew? (Answer is no one. Jobs didn’t understand the app revolution immediately though he got it fast.)

I was actually reading about these. Apparently they’re just a foamed version of melamine, a fairly common plastic material. You can get them for pretty cheap from a dollar store, or head on over to ebay and pick them up for around 10 to 15 cents each. I have a few projects around the house I wanted to try those sponges out with, so I wound up buying 50 for $6 there, lol.

How exactly does the Magic Eraser work? I would be afraid to use it on shower doors! Does it scratch?

I like the Mr Clean Eraser, but when i used it on a painted wall it took the paint off!

Thanks Garland. My work requires a lot of jpeg files. I just took myself off of a shared folder for a finished project, which freed up 1 GB of space. But I can easily use up 2 GB if I use it to back up my work files. I’m trying to decide if Dropbox is worth the premium price for more space, or whether Google Drive or iCloud (5 GB free) would be just as useful.

I find anything to do with Google docs, google hangouts, etc to be incredibly clumsy although I have colleagues that love it all. I don’t like having to sign in.

I use a magic eraser on my walls all the time to get dog grime off and have never had a problem. Was your paint fresh?

I use dropbox, skydrive and google drive thanks to all three of my kids who alternatively share with me on their favorite cloud storage places. It’s hard to remember where anything is! At least my log in is the same so I just check one place after another until I find what I’m looking for. My son recently moved all 4,000 of my iPhone pictures onto skydrive to free up some space on my phone. The neat thing is that I can still view them on my phone via the skydrive app.

Dropbox is convenient if you install it on each of the computers you’ll regularly use it on and only use the web interface for occasionally grabbing a file on your phone/tablet or while borrowing another computer. I like the convenience of always having the most up to date file on each of my computers without the worry of syncing them. It’s also nice knowing I have my thesis backed up on three different computers in addition to the USB drive I keep on myself wherever I go. :)

The Mr Clean Eraser is an abrasive, but it’s a very fine one. I think there’s something with the way the foam breaks down when you scrub with it that gives you really small particles to do the scrubbing. Keep in mind, this doesn’t mean it’ll necessarily damage paint, as by introducing really fine scratches is one of the ways to get a clean surface in the first place.

Greek yogurt.

Make sure you wet the Mr. Clean Eraser a bit before using it or it can take the paint off.

Just read back a couple of pages and saw there were several replies about Drop Box - many thanks. I don’t worry that much about my photos, between my phone and iPad sharing them, I feel like they are everywhere I need them to be (oh and Instragram soon enough, thanks to my kids). My main issue is massive amounts of work files, approximately 75 GB, that I never back up because it is too much hassle.

Snowdog, if you just want it backed up and not shared between multiple computers you can try something like Carbonite. I think it’s a little cheaper than Dropbox, a little more secure, and has unlimited (?) space. You just pay per PC you want it installed on.

frugaldoctor, please can you give us a brand name for the acne cream you love? My teenaged son is really struggling with acne now.

I hadn’t heard of Desolv-it, and had a couple of tops with grease stains that wouldn’t come out so I went looking for it. Unfortunately, it’s not available anywhere around here. But since I was at Walmart, I looked to see if they had something similar and they had Greased Lightning-Orange Blast, ALSO with real orange oil in it. Well, I tried it on both tops, one all-cotton and one a blend, both of which had been through the washer AND drier already. It got both stains out completely. The product was only $2.75 rather than the same-size bottle for almost 5 times the cost. So, thanks for the tip, even though I got something different in the end. Two of my favorite tops are no longer in the donation pile.

Thank you @Racin Reaver! Carbonite looks like exactly what I want, with access to my entire hard drive from any device. Cool.
