**PSAT Discussion Thread 2015**

@stresstasticlife the english/reading section is weighted more heavily on the SI so if you got 730 on math and 700 on reading/english your SI would be lower than if you got 700 on math and 730 on reading/english

@icantsleep I believe in you, and I hope that everything will work out in your favor <3 what state are you in, and what’s your SI?

@stresstasticlife The total score (0-1520) scale is based on two categories… math and English. The NMSC SI is based on 3 categories… basically it gives additional weight to students who do well in English. So the scores don’t always match.

@stresstasticlife im in Illinois and I got a 214

@icantsleep you may already know, but your state’s cutoff in 2014 was 216…out of 240. Which means that you actually have an excellent chance of getting in this year since it’s out of 228, not 240!

@icantsleep exact same boat here. I saw 99th percentile and got way too excited but I realized my SI is a mere 2 points under last years cutoff…so it could go either way. wish we knew cutoffs since this is going to impact my future so much if i do get it!

What colleges are you guys applying to?

@jerzmaster so you’re saying the number has stayed the same since 1955? lol

@cheescake Almost all of the NMSF become NMF. You have to take the SAT and have the support of your school/principal to be a finalist. Once a NMF, then there are numerous scholarships available to you. The amounts depend on the school you choose or even company your parent’s work for.

@maksbow I found an article that said there were 14,750 NMSF chosen in 1970. The NMSC has kept the number approximately the same every year.

@mkumar17 15,000/16,000 NMSF become NMF. This does not mean they take scholarships. Some choose to attend schools that do not participate in the NMSC program.

@workinghard i really like University of Michigan and UW Madison hbu?
@stresstasticlife ik im just super paranoid because yes it is out of less points but in my opinion this test was a lot easier than last years and there is the point that they no longer penalize for guessing so i fear that the scores might stay the same or even the fact that it was the college boards intentions to keep the cut off relatively the same as they have been in years past oh well ill probably just be stressed and constantly checking CC and anything to do with the CB for the next like 8 months.

@workinghard1234 Well, the college that I’m probably putting on the NMF application (assuming 220 makes the Florida cutoff) would either be USC or Bama at this point. Although that could change. But as far as top 2 college choices, UVA and Notre Dame.

Thanks man…you really know your stuff! Been a great help. So on a scale of 1-10, how are my chances for commendation as well as for semifinalist in your opinion? (1420/210 state of TN) @jerzmaster

@tigerrocks13 just out of curiosity what do you mean putting on the NMF application what are they asking for?

@icantsleep When you fill out your NMF application to receive awards, you put your college choice. This college can be any in the sponsorship/scholarship program, and the NMSC contacts the school with the applicants who listed them as their #1. The colleges then pick the students that they want to award with their National Merit Scholarships.

@mkumar17 I want to tell every one of you that your 10 on the scale. It’s just all guessing though. If I had to bet my money on you, I would take the bet that you will be a NMSF in TN based on all the information I’ve seen. I hope this helps you relax for the next 8 months!
