Are you a student yourself or a parent? Seems like you have a lot of experience @jerzmaster
@tigerrocks13 oh ok that makes sense. that will be a problem to figure out for another day
224 SI, 1490
@mkumar17 I’m a parent with a daughter who took the test. 25 years ago when I was taking standardized tests, I just missed the NMSF and was commended. However, I did well in HS and had good test grades on the SAT & ACT which helped me get a very good scholarship to the University of Houston. Have been happy with my choices every since!
@stresstasticlife The selection index is pretty much converting your score to a scale found on the previous PSATs. To do this its (2(CR&W)+M)/10 so people who did significantly better on math than reading are at a disadvantage.
Some schools give automatic national merit scholarships. Some schools select only a few people.
The selection index this year does not match previous year’s selection indexes. Don’t compare your scores to previous years because you will just be disappointed. Last year’s scale was 0-240, this year’s new scale is 0-228.
I’ve seen a site that has tried to figure out the correlation between last year’s and this year’s state-by-state cut-off scores, but I don’t know if it’s accurate.
I am 99 percentile but didn’t get an email
Emails come out in midApril for commendation and september for SF @classof2o17
@jerzmaster, yes however both are scaled to fit with the sat, (its out of 228 to make up for the easiness) and that’s exactly the way the college board scaled it in their preliminary conversion scale, which is why its so not accurate. What I meant by my explanation is that the national merit people wanted to keep the numbers at a fairly familiar level and keep reading and writing to have twice the weight that math does, like the old PSAT.
What do y’all think commended will be
Im thinking 1300+
Also, is a 1480 good?
Yes. Very good. You should be set for SF @nillupa
@mkumar17 thanks. What do you think commended will be?
Is a 1440 good?
@loquatical There was a time 10 years ago when 96.5th percentile would do it in Mississippi. Right now I’m sweating bullets that the roughly 99.1rst percentile will be enough for my son. Our percentile has been rising every year.
Two of our state’s large school districts have been having a year long prep class limited to students in the top 10 percent, that starts in January. After the PSAT they go to ACT review. They quadrupled their number of NMSF, but our district refuses to do anything. In fact, our district had an SAT review course this semester and kicked out all the smart kids because they said they didn’t need it. Yeah, right, kick out the kids who might get a $150,000 scholarship out of it.
@tigerrocks13 @jakeolsen11 another fellow Floridian here! I got a 1430 and a 215 SI. I think I’ve made the cutoff, as on the old test it’s never been higher than 214 for more than six years, and I expect it to fall in the 205-210 range with the new 228 range. Good luck to you both; we all probably have at least a shot at Semifinalist next September.
Is there going to be a report on percentiles by state or anything like that?
