**PSAT Discussion Thread 2015**

Michigander here. Is a score of 1400 (720M 680W/R) and 208 SI make commended or Semifinalist in Michigan?

@payn4ward i have a friend who got 1350, 201 98/97 percentile if that helps!

we dont know yet. i got a 1430 and a 210 SI… idk what the qualifying score is

Will a 1470, 221 SI make semifinalist in CA?

LOL… welcome newbiw @8o6peary ! Yes, about 50,000 students are selected as commended/semi-finalist each year. I think this number goes back decades now. And yes, we have probably don’t have a representative pool of students on this discussion. We should test this and see what percentage of us are voting for Donald Trump and test if this matches the national averages!!!

@loveispancakes PSAT has absolutely no role in admissions. Colleges don’t even see the score.

There are two purposes for the PSAT: 1) (for the top 1%) National Merit Scholarship. It’s “only” $2500, but opens the door to many other scholarships; and 2) (for everyone else) practice for the SAT. You can take all the practice tests you want, but the PSAT is taken under actual testing conditions.

Would it be possible to include the state with your score table, if known?

Our daughter has 1430 with 211 SI and it is 99pc. We are in Ohio. Not sure she will make finalist this year. In 2014, our son had 213/99pc but was not selected as semifinalist in Ohio. The test has changed this year and many more students have taken PSAT than previous years.

Thanks for your great work!

Yay - S’s score “magically” appeared a few minutes ago. He did so much better than his last year’s test. He got 1470/218. Killed the math and did better than expected in the English. Now we wait until Fall.

@mtrosemom Which state you at?

@gusmahler, Do we have to be NMSFs to be eligible for other scholarships? Is a high enough percentile be sufficient? Few others that are new partners to college board seemed to be need based

Calculate SI from the scores: (2(670)+720)/10=206
This should be good enough for NMSF in many states.

Yes @mamallama , My D’s school used the later test date. However, the entire district tested on the later date, but only my D’s school is having a problem.

@loveispancakes There are plenty of scholarships available for non NM.

What National Merit opens up are automaticfull-ride scholarships to certain schools just for being NM (See http://thecollegematchmaker.com/52-colleges-offering-full-tuition-scholarships-national-merit-finalists/) Even schools that don’t offer automatic full-ride scholarships might offer rewards in addition to the $2500 NM scholarship.

SIL told my H that youngest niece got a 99% score, but he didn’t ask her the breakdown. Am I reading this correctly that while she did well, it is too early to tell if she will be a NMSF? She lives in CT (while we live in MA).

For your data purposes - daughter got a 1470 but it was a 222 SI (she got 38 reading, 37 writing, and 36 math). Maryland.

@3puppies too early unfortunately.

@3puppies You need to know the selection index.

@CA1543 - are you sure about that? Do you maybe have reading and writing swapped? My DD has a 35 reading just like you stated your son has - but shows as a 98th national / 97th user. Her 37 writing and language is 99th. IOW, I can believe that if your son got a 36 in reading, that might be 99th, while 35 in writing might also be 99th…

Do people think a 1480 and 220 SI, will qualify in Connecticut?

Thank you so much!
