Purdue Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

Treat it as another essay that needs to be tightly written and logically organized laying out your reasons for wanting to change. it should not be dashed off

It’s not a deal breaker that your honors floormates aren’t all FYE. There are seminar courses all FYE take some flavor of and the discussion sections of large lectures also provide opportunities to form study groups. And kids study all over the place.

The honors engineering students have their own section of the FYE design class. It’s all project based so there are built in study groups in that class. The honors engineering students also have their own team building activities so they get to know each other during Boiler Gold Rush (freshman orientation), before classes start. The honors profs also have their offices in the honors residence so lots of impromptu opportunities for study groups at office hours.

@momofboiler1 is it still possible to take honors FYE and not be in Honors College? Wasn’t that what Goss Scholars were?

Yes, Goss Scholars students take the honors FYE course. My understand is that LLC is super competitive and very small. I don’t know if they participate in the other honors engineering events/programs.

Goss was started after my D was a freshman so I’m less familiar with the program. When they introduced Goss in the middle of my D’s time at Purdue, they told the honors engineering students that they were automatically considered Goss scholars as well. Not sure if that is changed.

You are correct @momofboiler1, all Honors College FYE students are considered Goss Scholars automatically, that hasn’t changed.

This is a link I have saved to a Padlet that was given out during the Goss Scholars session of Purdue For Me last year. It has various informative links

Long answer, but
@3rdGenAgCol is correct
our high school offers no AP classes so all advanced classes are at our local community college or state-system 4-yr college. He took MAT 171 (pre-calc algebra), MAT 172 (pre-calc trig), MAT 271 (calculus 1), MAT 272 (calculus 2), MAT 273 (calculus 3), and now MAT 283 (linear algebra). Over 1/2 of our seniors graduate with an associates degree (Arts, Science, Fine Arts or Engineering) two weeks before high school graduation and the vast majority of those credits transfers to most universities, some taking the place of required classes and some as electives if the univ doesn’t think the class quite fit a requirement they have. My daughter transferred 66 hours into her college so she was able to be in an honors college and have 3 minors and still graduate in 3 1/2 yrs without any overload semesters and was 100% accustomed to the ways of college professors by the time she left home. On the flip side, I wish we had some AP
my oldest needed APs
he was ready for the rigor but not the time management and self-management of being on a college campus in college classes in 10th grade and really struggled. A mix of AP and DE seems like the ideal thing.

Probably lower. Computer Science, Data Science, and Engineering (high priority majors) have most of their spots filled through Early Action. Purdue is a good temperature test because other schools: UMich, UIUC, and Georgia Tech are even more competitive!

My son went through this process last year and he received the award for Hispanic Recognition. I don’t recall if it was mentioned in the initial acceptance letter or if it was listed in the follow-up financial letter.

From the 2022-23 Women in Engineering report just out from Purdue:

We have been working on increasing the number of pre-college students that we touch, and I’m proud to say that we reached more than 5,500 students in kindergarten – 10th grade in 2022-23. The incoming first year engineering class for Fall 2023 was composed of the largest number (848) and percentage (35%) of women in Purdue’s history, and we are excited to welcome those students into the WiE community.

And we are also proud to say that, according to ASEE By the Numbers (2022 edition), Purdue is No. 2 in the country and #1 in the Big Ten in the number of bachelor’s degrees in engineering awarded to women

Two years ago my son got in FYE and the honors college. He was required you to be in Goss LC. He got into Aero and he Left and Honors housing went into Hillenbrand his sophomore year and switched to Data Mine. He is living off campus this year and not in an LC. He is still in John Martin Honors College and is a TA in the honors college for the last 2 years. He is also on the Trustee Scholarship.

ETA: In-State Student

My daughter did not get into FYE early admission but she did get into her second choice major which is Agricultural Econ. I don’t know much about this program. Is anyone familiar with it?

Can anyone tell me if it is worth traveling from OOS to Forge Ahead event for accepted Honors students? This program only lasts half a day and I am trying to decide if it makes sense for my kid to attend. Is it really useful/fun?

My D was :100: sold on Purdue and had so much going on in her senior year of GS that she didn’t go to any accepted student events. She had also previously been for STEP for a week, plus an official tour.

If she hadn’t been to campus before and wasn’t sure of her decision, we would have found the time.

We combined a Purdue’s For Me and Forge Ahead event into a weekend, and it really tipped our son over the edge in deciding between Purdue and GaTech. He was really impressed by the Forge Ahead session, but it would have been a lot of travel if that were the only thing we did. If you haven’t visited Purdue before, the combination of the two sessions was really good.

Looking to book the Purdue for me for my son, as he hasnt seen the campus yet. He is anxious to go, but Im worried the Feb date will be freezing.

What is the advice from those who have weathered the cold? Can he still get a good idea of all the campus has to offer? Thank you.

Not bad to check it out when things are real. He is going to have to live there after all.

It will be cold, but it’s worth seeing what it’s like. It can range from -5 to 50, so be prepared for anything.

Agree with what’s already been said, West Lafayette does have winter weather, best to experience it (could be warm or cold). Definitely take layers because there is a lot of walking between buildings. When we were there in March it was in the 20’s-30’s, but it didn’t hinder our ability to learn all about the campus.

When we were there in March two years ago it was unseasonably warm and kids were lounging in hammocks and studying outside. That is NOT what they had last year.
