Purdue is crazy tough for FYE - I don’t think anyone is a guarantee no matter how high their stats were. Our son applied to business as a result. He had a 32 and a 3.92 gpa and got denied. Those numbers are above what the Purdue website says for business but he also goes to a competitive school in Chicago burbs with a ton of Purdue applicants. His college counselor said he was a shoe in for Purdue but nope! I’m sorry about your son but you are not alone, sadly.
If 100 kids applied to Purdue from your high school, it is highly likely that Purdue admissions compared your student to that high school peer group first.
there is a post earlier that they reduced the admission by a lot. since they have to maintain a set number for in state, they have to reduce oos. UIUC did that in 2022 and they made clear that they reduce oos
You are so sweet, thank you. It has been super tough and there has been a lot of rethinking how he approached his high school classes. This is our fourth kid going through this and none of our others had this type of failure so it’s been crazy humbling. He’s taking it in stride but does make you contemplate things. Now he needs to decide business versus engineering. He applied to different majors at different schools so it makes the decision making process even harder. The IBE (integrated business and engineering) program at Purdue seemed to fit his needs precisely so back to the drawing board!
ah, ok - makes a little more sense then. We’re from IL and Ironically he applied to UIUC also (business) but don’t think his stats are strong enough there either. Summary of this… living in Illinois isn’t the greatest for college acceptances LOL!!
For sure, and that’s my point. It’s a debate a lot of parents with younger kids have, I think - should I put them into the highest performing high school peer group, with hope that rubs off and pushes them, or live in a less-competitive environment. I don’t regret our decision to go with the competitive high school (yet :)) but it does make it hard at these competitive schools. That said, a 34 ACT is supposedly around the 75th percentile for Purdue’s FYE class of 2028, so I’m a bit surprised that didn’t carry more weight.
What about essays/recommendations?
As they say, your essays may not get you IN, but may keep you OUT.
Also, I feel we give a lot of weightage to HS GPAs; more than it deserves.
Everyone knows that barring a few exceptions, in most schools you can get straight As; with all the parental support and involvement, it’s not a true reflection of a student’s individual capabilities and motivations.
I know this was mentioned earlier in the thread, but I’m a little confused about the answer. My student has basically AP credits for almost all of the FYE curriculum. I understand that T2M requires a high STEM gpa… and i think that in general kids can’t take their major classes until they are accepted in the major. So what is student supposed to take freshman year then? I know they can repeat classes (deeper understanding), but my kid has already done very well at multivariable and high level chem so I’m not sure he needs that? If he focuses on gen ed stuff then he may not have the STEM he needs to get his major? (I saw recommendations for other classes in BME but not mechE?)
Here’s the mech e 4 year plan of study “map” - Undergraduate Program Map - Mechanical Engineering - Purdue University
You can click on any box to get more information about the class.
The engineering students that come in with lots of AP credits, typically start in the next class in the sequence. What I like about the mech e map is that it’s easy to see what comes next in the sequence for math, physics, chem. There is a process for early transition to major so some of the mech e specific classes should be accessible second semester.
Note for others: There should be something similar for each engineering major at Purdue. Just google Purdue+major+4 year plan of study. Also, every major will have a contact person’s email so if your student has course questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our experience at Purdue is that they are very very responsive!
Hello, same situation for my daughtwr, she is interested for main campus, should we submit a LOCI to show interest, and what should the LOCI look like. Thanks
My kid got rejected for FYE. It was a bit of a reach for him though his school scoir data shows acceptance in his GPA range (with lower SAT scores) last year. He comes from a competitive school in the state. Luckily he is accepted to Engineering in Pitt, Penn State and a couple of safeties. He has 1450 SAT, 7APs, 12honors, decent EC’s but he knows GPA was his problem 3.8WGPA. His 9th grade was a big issue and his school also generally doesn’t inflate grades… I see so many GPA 4s all around but many go test optional but Purdue is different as it prefers Test scores… From what I see, it is very competitive and those admitted are stellar and well deserved. Congratulations to all the accepted kids. Given the entry to major requirements for Mech Eng in Purdue, my kid is happy with his current offers and waiting for other decisions. Good luck to all accepted students.
Reading results on this thread- the stats are definitely getting tougher. Purdue has experienced higher than expected yield the last few years. That could explain this shift. Excess yield has contributed to housing crunch and class crowding. Purdue probably had to respond to those factors.
Those are great schools! And your student has excellent stats. Congrats.
While I haven’t seen official numbers from Purdue, there are a number of college admission websites claiming that Purdue received 8,000 more EA applications than last cycle.
Definitely use the program map, as @momofboiler1 suggested.
My son is AAE, but that overlaps a lot with ME. He came in with a lot of credits. In addition to the FYE base courses (131/132 or 161/162 if Honors), he made sure to finish some of the electives (he need an oral communication course), then selectively picked courses that don’t require status in the major. He did this carefully not to risk his GPA too much for T2M, and to just allow some time to adjust as a freshman.
Examples. He retook Differential Equations (after trying the previous year exams from the math dept website), took a CAD class (MFET163), took Thermodynamics and Physics E&M. Even with 10+ classes worth of incoming credits, there should be a balanced set of classes easily available.
Congrats! Can I ask of the Presidents Scholarship is mentioned in admit letter or you have to setup the myPurdue account to see it?
Does anyone know how difficult it would be to double major in Political Science and Economics at Purdue? I was just admitted to Poli Sci with Trustees scholarship and I would like to attend the business school for the economics major as well, but I didn’t know if this was feasible or not thanks!
Thank you so much. I am ultra proud of them. I had no idea the Trustee scholarship was that selective. Do you have to maintain 4.0 to keep it? Knowing her, I am sure she would lol.
Congrats on both your ultra impressive kids! Are you OOS? We are.
Deferred, OOS, 3.67 UW, 1530 SAT, FYE/CS
Decision at 5pm
there was no submit LOCI option in the dropdown until after the decision
OOS Presidential is 10K, Trustee is 16K
