Question about George Allen's admission...

I remember hearing that George Allen was actually rejected from the University of Virginia. But, he went to Charlottesville anyways and found a seat in the Office of Admissions or something and refused to move until he was accepted. He was there for a week before the admissions people gave him a spot that should have gone to a kid on the waitlist just so they could get him out of there.

I’m not sure if this is entirely accurate but I remember hearing this story (or something very close to it)last year. I’m trying to find some sort of confirmation on this story. I figured that some UVA student would know…

Actually, I’m pretty sure that this can’t be right for George Allen because he transferred into UVA… He may have still been denied transfer admission and done this?

But I remember a teacher told me this story about a successful politician who went to UVA and now I can’t remember who the person was. I’m not even sure if this is true or if the teacher was just saying stuff… Any stories about famous politicians who went to UVA like this one?

Probably not true. George Allen is a recruited athlete. He played QB for the football team in the 70s. I would think that he had a scholarship to play football.

The list of alumni who went into politics is long. You can see the list on [the notable alumni page](http://www.virginia.edu/notablealumni/).

Who knows, who cares? It was many years ago and Allen was not only a recruited athlete, but the son of a famous and influential public figure. UVA and Dean J bend rules for people like that all the time.

Cavalier, can you mention some more examples of bending rules…just curious.

say my dad gave UVa $50,000,000 for a new science building. Special exception!

Or how about Casteen is my uncle! Special exception!

I discovered a plot to destroy the lawn by terrorists and was able to stop it, and help catch the peeps involved. Another special exception!

My dad is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. another exception!

At the age of 15 I found a cure to cancer…even though I only got a 1000 on my SATs. Special exception!

My dad is the education director (or whatever the position is called) of the state of virginia…

I think you get the point.

Or suppose you are starring in an upcoming James Cameron flick. Or you’re black. Or american indian. Or perhaps you’re being recruited for the cross country team. Were you not aware of the various types of preferential admissions at colleges, BGjeez? It’s very prevalent, especially at schools like UVA. Granted, development cases (children of rich donors) and VIPs are greatly outnumbered by athletes and AA cases.

I have nothing to do with development, athletics, and other “special interests”. When we read the applications of students with “connections”, we rarely know it.

Oh, yes, I have heard of stories such as those you described, but I mainly thought of those that involve large sums of $$$. What intrigued me to ask for more examples was you saing that Dean J was involved as well. Yea, she already replied to your post so no need to talk about this anymore.

i tell you, anything can be done if you got the dough in this country.

like what i learned in comm 180, cash is king.

I actually asked around about this. There’s a story that Allen was on the waitlist at the law school and he was here in person up on the first day and was able to take the spot of someone who didn’t show up. A certain number of students who enroll at any school don’t show up for various reasons (visa issues are a common reason) and I guess he was in the right place at the right time.
