You definitely need to lighten as you age, especially if you started with very dark hair (like me). I do my own color but go in twice a year for highlights (“glints”) that brighten the look. My hair grows so slowly that I just need to do root touchup between those two salon visits.
I’m thinking of becoming a redhead if I decide to color my hair. Should go well with my green eyes. Thankfully, even though I’m rapidly approaching big six-O, my hair hasn’t gone gray yet, but it will happen soon.
A couple of years ago, I tried one of those apps that lets you test different hair colors with a photo. First I tested white hair - my roots come in silvery so that’s the shade I picked. I thought my face disappeared. Then I tried red - didn’t work with my skin tone. Then blond for fun - eek! Either I’m so used to my natural color that anything else looks funny to me, or my body knew what it was doing to grow this color. Either way, I will continue to get it colored for now. It’s dark brunette, but I may ask my hairdresser what she thinks about going a bit lighter.
Oh - thought green might be interesting but it turned out purple looked better. Either color would fit in fine in my neighborhood, but no.
I’ve been transitioning my hair to gray for about 6 months now. We figure by this time next year it will be mostly gray with some dark streaks to give it some interest. It’s a process…the foils are pretty time-consuming, and the cost is up there.
But, the gray works in with my curls and the look seems to last longer
I saw an older woman today (maybe late 70s/early 80s) with pretty obviously died dark auburn hair. It did not look good. BUT, I am lucky that I have very few grays at age 61 and my hair is 98% dark chestnut brown. I have one little patch of gray along the crown that I think might be related to the vitiligo I have and maybe a little aging. I have had that patch for 30 years, but very few other grays and I think my natural brunette hair is one of my best features – it’s for sure not the bags under my eyes. So dark hair can look good on an older woman. I suspect I will not get a ton of grays. My parents gave me copious eye bags and a turkey neck + double chin, but neither of them went completely gray.
Just saw this article in our local paper that reprints NYT and was going to ask if anyone can gift a link. Thanks for sharing!
Maybe someone else has an extra gift link? I worry about running out before the end of the month.

Rhinelander v. Rhinelander was one of the most scandalous trials of the Jazz Age. 100 years later, it reads as a tragedy about the country’s original sin.
Wow—thanks for the link. I had never heard of Rhinelanders and feel sorry for Leonard and Alice.
So much hatred and division—then and now.

This makes me VERY angry but I want our Attorney Generals to do something about it! It’s how companies are using data to price fix what we are charged and charge each of us different amounts! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osxr7xSxsGo
I doubt they’ll do anything. American capitalism benefits corporations, not consumers.
