Rant Alert: TV shows cancelled

The X files… cancelled due to a government conspiracy… but the truth is still out there. Wish it could return.

I also like the Finder. I watch Bones, from which it is a spin off- but the writing in Bones has slacked off a lot, pretty formulaic.
I am intrigued by the gypsy family, perhaps we could have a spin off of The Finder?

I have heard that Fringe is a lot like X-Files. Is this true?

^ IMO, no. I love both but I don’t see a lot of similarities… at all…

Haha, seems I got some bad info then!

Yay, new title ideas for On Demand.

YDS - Glad to hear Parenthood saved.

It is Upfronts which is why we are hearing about all of these shows getting cancelled. IMO there wasn’t a lot of good shows this year. I study television and will admit to being a snob so warning. Huge fan of New Girl which I think is the only thing I picked up on the networks. I’ve been meaning to watch Scandal too.

Re: Scandal

Not a huge fan of it unless Aaron Sorkin writes it (the inventor of walk and talks) or if Lauren Graham is saying the dialogue. Mentioning Graham, I am happy to see Parenthood got picked up for another season. We had a pretty good thread going on in the cafe about the show. Katims’ County (a new medical drama) didn’t get picked up which is disappointing but he still has Parenthood. Also happy to see Fringe will get a good ending even though I gave up on the show this season.

NBC screwed over BFF which I am sad to see go. Every show that was cancelled had a good reason to go. Happy to see Cougar Town move to a different network (TBS) where hopefully it will do better. ABC didn’t give a **** about that show.

On cable I’ve been watching Veep and Girls which are both amazing and doing well. Besides that I still have Mad Men to get through the next couple of weeks. I use summer as a way to catch up on TV (currently getting through Six Feet Under, staring Firefly, and maybe Life).

Firefly - Never watched it when it aired. I have a huge crush on Nathan Fillion and I really like Castle so it has been on my list to watch for awhile. God I wish Nathan still looked like that. I watch Morena Baccarin (and more than of her than I need to sometimes) on Homeland which is phenomenal. Joss Whedon and I have our moments and if you haven’t seen The Avengers (which he wrote/directed) you need to do stat.

I will never not be be over ABC canceling Pushing Daisies. The Writer’s Strike screwed them over and halted production but the first season is phenomenal. Due to ABC’s poor promotion of the show it failed in its time slot. Ugh. I miss Lee Pace on my television.

Just caught up on Missing…it started slowly, but picked up speed. Also loved The Finder…but I like quirky characters.

I miss V…the show ended abruptly…I wasn’t ready for it to end.

Pushing Daisies and Firefly recently suggested to me by 20-something D. I love Castle!

Also firefly fans, but anything done by Whedon is beloved in our house.

I liked unforgettable, for some reason, and was pretty bummed when they just kind of let go of the US version of “prime suspect” so early on.

As for Grey’s, what the heck was with that finale? I mean really?

The reason they talk so fast on scandal is because it is Shonda Rhimes and she likes that riff type thing.

Another black armband for Awake here. (Wasn’t Jason Isaacs just astounding in the last episode? I was ready to award him an Emmy by the end of the hour.) My theory to explain the show’s low ratings is that it required close attention to keep track of which world Britten was in at any given moment, and it was impossible to make sense of the show if you were simultaneously texting, checking Facebook, knitting, or hollering at the kids to go to bed–and the large numbers of viewers needed for good ratings just don’t watch TV with rapt attention anymore. I wish Awake had begun life in AMC or HBO, where I think it would have easily attracted an adequately sized fanbase to keep it on the air.

The last show that broke my heart this way was Kidnapped–the plan was to have the kidnap recovery expert (played by the terrific Jeremy Sisto) handle a different case each season. Of course the cancellation notice came in before the first season’s episodes had even completed filming, so the producers revised the scripts to quickly solve the kidnapping in the remaining handful of hours the network gave the show–pretty much ruining what had been until then a very elegantly plotted and well acted series. It was an unfortunate way to go out.

At this point, I’m leery of committing to any new network drama. If it’s not a police procedural, its chances will be mighty slim.

I also am an Awake fan… and it is going to drive me nuts if (as anticipated) the season finale provides no resolution. (I mean, will we ever know which world was real? do the scriptwriters even know?)

It’s no surprise to me that it is being cancelled because there has been talk among the fan base for weeks.

I wonder if there is any chance of resurrection & continuation on cable? I can see it doing well on AMC. I agree about the attention required, but I think viewers who watch programs like Mad Men or Breaking Bad are more willing to stick with a narrative and enjoy following the character development.

That was not the finale. The finale is tomorrow night.

So sad about Harry’s Law. I don’t want much non-sports or non-PBS, but I always tried to catch Harry. Didn’t know it was axed until I came on here. Yet another reason not to leave CC!

Enjoyed The Finder and thought it was well cast. Was enjoying the storyline. The show was easy to watch. I am bummed to hear they canceled this.

Watched Alcatraz and was intrigued by the storyline. The first season was all about building up a good story. It’s like reading a novel 1/4 of the way through. Very frustrating.

Where the heck is “Breaking Bad”? It is supposed to be the last season.

^^ “Breaking Bad” starts in July! The last season will air in two sets of eight episodes…

poetgrl, I agree. I was skeptical about Unforgettable at first and Poppy Montgomery drove me crazy in the first few episodes. But the show has settled into interesting stories, along with the season long story about her sister’s murder, and the ensemble cast is remarkably strong. I was very disappointed about Prime Suspect, too. It was a very good show and Maria Bello was superb. It was how I felt last year about the loss of Detroit 1-8-7 and Michael Imperioli.

NOOOOO, how could they cancel The Finder??? It was a unique story with interesting characters. How bummed.

count me in as another Pushing Daisies fan here.

And MORE than unhappy that this is the last season of Eureka!

Do like Lost Girl though, kind of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Zena kind of thing!

Ah…Sports Night. What an awesome show! Peter Krause, Felicity Huffman, and Josh Charles before they were household names. That casting person had a gift! And the writing was fabulous.
Thanks for the memory, Indiana!

The decided to cancel “Who Do You Think You Are”. Bummed…

I’m still mourning the untimely death of My So Called Life. I still want to know what happened to Angela and her friends/family.

My new TV strategy, which I started this year, is that I don’t commit to a show in its first season. I may watch the pilot, but I am fed up falling in love with a show and then having it die. (Especially when the show ends on a cliff hanger and never comes back – thinking both Flash Forward and Las Vegas.) Back in the day, many series with low ratings were given some time to gain an audience. Not anymore. With DVDs, Netflix and Amazon streaming, I can catch up on old episodes. I know it’s not what the TV networks want to hear, but they are digging their own grave.
