strange weather, we had April in January, now we are getting January in March. They are saying 12-16 where I live, which while it is a significant snowfall is not all that big, I have seen 2ft+ snowfalls over the years. The big concern for me might be the wind, they are saying gusts as high as 60mph, which could take out the power (someday power lines will all be buried underground, when we have flying cars and chocolate cake that is yummy and causes you to lose weight).
My son and his GF are here in MD so she can interview Monday and Tuesday. The potential employers put her up in hotels for 2 different nights. He’s supposed to be back at work Wednesday, several hours north. I’m worried about how this will all work out.
I just don’t want the power to go out.
Yes, I hope the power doesn’t go out. Last time I was in DC when S had the transformer at his condo blow, he learned no water with no power. Fortunately I had an extra bed in my hotel room and he spent the night with me.
Here in the DC area we’re looking at possibly up to 10". Now I have to plan on making up for the lost Tuesday’s work hours the rest of the week.
DC is horrible at dealing with 10" of snow.
Where I live we can deal with more, no problem. We’re used to it. I actually don’t find snowstorms unusual for March. We get more snow in Feb and March than January many winters.
D2 and I are hoping for a snow day. Unless it is an outright blizzard, we should still be able to get food delivery from Seamless. Unfortunately it wouldn’t be a day off for me because I’ll be able to work remotely.
Hey, “your” Nor’easter is suppose to bring our Ohio area 3-6 inches - I guess I shouldn’t whine about it after seeing some of your totals, but I have to say, I’m not happy about it! It hasn’t snowed in ages! - which was GREAT!
H and I arrived in Boston today. Alaska had no change fees and money back cancellations early Sunday morning for Tuesday and Wednesday flights.
We must be here Friday and there were no direct flights for Monday or Thursday. Plus we had to do
First class outgoing. Too much money but such a nice trip
Ugh, now our news is saying 15-25".
No remote work possible in essential healthcare.
Ive lived 2 miles from the hospital for 38 years so have ALMOST always been able to drive in.
Getting out of the driveway is the problem.
In my younger years, I’ve walked in. No more.
Our work place has a supply of blow up mattresses and cots, there is always a pajama party during storms.
Large employer gives generous PTO hours.
Anyone who gets in within the first two hours of their shift is paid for the entire shift.
Otherwise, you can use PTO.
RARELY, after a monumental snow, the organization will decide to pay time and one half to those who showed up. This is never announced in advance. It does motivate SOME younger staff in search of extra $$$ to make it in.
At my age, it’s harder and harder to activate 2feet of snow.
@stevensmama Sent you a PM with my pet store’s protocol for weather emergency prep. If the sitter can’t/won’t take Piggie to her house – here’s what to do!
Who knows what we’ll get? I’ve been watching all weekend as I have a flight out Thursday 6am but staying in Boston overnight on Wednesday and want to make sure I can get there. I already switched my hotel from one about 6 miles away from Logan to one at the airport to avoid any potential issues with travel getting there that morning and opted to take a bus Wednesday instead of doing the park and fly. Then there’s the cat/house sitter to consider. If we get more than 3 or 4 inches I’ll have to have someone come plow so I can get out and they can get in. D is home for spring break but won’t stay in the house by herself after I leave so she is securing a place to stay starting Wed as well. I cannot wait to move out of the NE…two more years and counting !
@jym626 --thanks for the concern, jym! We are not really coastal–up on high ground about half a mile from the Delaware Bay. So storm surges aren’t an issue for us, but I appreciate you asking!
It’s going to be a concern for a lot of people up and down the Shore.
You are welcome, @garland. Everyone stay safe. I don’t miss that stuff.
BTW, did I post in this thread earlier?? Don’t see it…
Whoops, tagged the wrong person. Sorry! Meant to thank @lje62 for Cape May heads up! My bad!
What is it about snowstorms that have everyone running to the store for bread, milk and eggs? My mom always did that too… but I never really understood why. Snowstorm = French Toast frenzy, maybe?
We are in the southern Berkshires and according to our local forecaster, we could get a significant amount… he is much less alarmist than the Weather Channel, so I tend to have faith in his predictions.
I think it’s just the security of having the oft-used perishables you’d normally expect/want to have on hand but will not be able to replenish as easily during the storm. If you take your coffee with milk or enjoy eggs for breakfast, it’s a bummer not to have them.
Wine, chocolate and coffee are on my list.
I think people have some racial memory when it comes to storms, they assume the storm is going to be so bad that trucking and trains will be disrupted, that roads will be blocked for days, etc. It was true when I was growing up, but I think it has gotten worse with the advent of “weather porn”, where every storm is the Hurricane of 1938 or something. This is going to be a significant storm, don’t get me wrong, and I am sure power will go out for some people, that roads will be impassible for a while, but they are predicting (in my area) that it will be over by late afternoon. Even when we had the miserable storms in early 1996 (my house was under construction during it, when we lived there!), at the worst roads were impassible for a couple of days. It is even more ironic given how many people around me drive SUV’s and other AWD vehicles.
I’m going to stock up on hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps. We’ve invited our neighbors to come over and sit in our hot tub with us during the storm tomorrow night. That is heaven!
