Ready for the nor'easter?

I don’t know anyone who runs out to stock up on milk, bread, and eggs. But I know scores of people who think that sharing memes about other people running out to stock up on them is cutting edge humor. Oy.

Friends are staying over because they are having their floors refinished and can’t stay in their house. They planned to cook and buy food for tonight and tomorrow. Not going to the grocery store!! Will go to gym instead. Weatherman says 18-24" for my area of MA.

I agree with musicprnt about the reason. My H vididly remembers the blizzard of '66 when they couldn’t get out of the house for 5 days and had to finally dig a tunnel - and this was in Syracuse -a place that avgs 120 inches of snow a year.

Of course H never believes we will get anywhere near what is forecasted.

The only time I go to the store when storm is predicted is if it’s my regular marketing day. I only go every two weeks so there is often no food in frig (though I always have staples and stuff in the freezer.) I went to the market last Thursday so no need to go get anything. I did have to go yesterday to get our Sunday bagels and beef stock for the beef stew I was making for dinner and realized I was out of when I decided to make it.

I don’t stock up for storm, either. One thing I noticed; many people stock up and empty the shelves. If you go to the store soon after the storm, the shelves may still remain empty until their restock time.

I got milk today, but I would’ve gotten it even if there was no storm coming. We needed it.

I’m not looking forward to this. 12-22" in CT, with lots of wind. I’m sure S2 will be working from home in DC tomorrow, if not Wed as well since DC will have alot of trouble dealing with 10" of snow.

One interesting thing about this storm, it is happening around the time when one of the more famous (infamous) blizzards hit the northeast, the blizzard of 1888…it hit on March 11th, like today’s storm it hit after there had been something of a warming trend, people figured winter was over. Unlike 1888, I doubt this one will be as severe, that dumped up to 50" of snow in some places.

This should be a good one. As one would suspect, we are used to getting snow and know how to deal with it.

@musicprnt, one of my favorite books when I was a child was one that took place during the 1888 blizzard. The story took place in my home time (New Haven.) I must have read it 1000 times.

They upped the predictions in my area. Most conservative, and the one I usually trust, says up to 20". The other two are saying up to 24" or 30". The forecast for high winds has me more concerned than the snowfall predictions because I don’t want to lose power.

I’ll take the credit @garland

If you’re housebound, you have to have certain things. And don’t forget, even if plowed, streets in the most snowy areas can still hold 3-4" of snow, which can pack and ice and make driving tough. Plus, nights this week will drop below freezing. (Not that they usually plow my street early on, despite that it runs between two cross-town roads and is a cut through.)

12-18" is nothing to snuff at. Not until it’s warmed up a tad, the blacktop on the roads warms and that snow is gone or just slushy. An don’t forget snow can wreck havoc on the commuter lines, too.

Made arrangements for somebody to shovel, and the petsitter is going to take the guinea pig home with her tonight. <:-P Now all I have to deal with is the 97 degree heat here at Indian Wells… :open_mouth:

I’m sleeping at the hospital where I intern as chaplain so I can be sure to be there for my morning shift tomorrow. It’s an hours drive so if staff can’t get in tomorrow I’ll be happy to stay there instead of driving home. With 18" predicted I’ll bring undies for Wednesday.

And of course, we have the need to get two family members to the northeast by Thursday or Friday. I’m thinking…that’s not going to happen…at least not easily…with all,the reschedules from Tuesday and Wednesday to Thursday and Friday.

I got my tomato soup today so I am good to go with Velveeta grilled cheese and tomato soup! Yum.

If the power stays on…I also have the ingredients for stew for Wednesday.

We rarely lose power since we’re right near a substation. Except this afternoon, unexpectedly. And last week. Now, I’m a little concerned…

But I have milk and eggs and three kinds of cheese, so there’s that.

My must have are ice cream and wine, and we’ve got plenty.
I was very worried about son and his GF, because they were traveling for her to do interviews. She arranged to get both done today, and they are headed back north now, before the snow starts. He may miss an extra day of work, but they will be safe.

One of my daughters was involved in a serious car accident at the beginning of the winter, on her way to work in snow. She has been traumatized by that and can’t seem to find a away to cope with her commute in the event of a snowstorm.
She is a NP that works in a state prison for women. I suggested she stay at a local hotel , but she doesn’t think cab or uber will operate in a blizzard

Kid’s flight out of “Baltimorestan” took off without any issues. Phew.

Stay warn and safe, dear CCers!

If the power goes out though, I guess those eggs better be hard boiled.

Well, I got the groceries. The store was stocked with bread, milk, and eggs but did not have fresh broccoli, raspberries or green beans for some reason. A few things like a package of Biscoff jumped in my shopping cart. Why does a snowstorm seem to give license to eating junk food?

Snow totals keep increasing with the most conservative estimate saying as much as 24 inches now. Seems like the snowstorm will be slightly more inland than previously modeled and they bumped up the expectations.
