I was recently accepted to CAS. I was just wondering what I would have to do both in school or outside of school that would convince cornell to rescind my acceptance. I was just curious because isn’t ED a legally binding agreement and aren’t I now forced to withdraw all of my other applications. So if they rescind my acceptance, wouldn’t I potentially have no college to go to?

Yes. If you do enough stupid stuff to get Cornell to withdraw your application then you are almost definitely not getting into any other schools. A lot of colleges request that guidance counselors inform them of the students actions that may warrant a change in admission, and if you’re trying to get out of not going to Cornell, you’re not going anywhere else. You probably shouldn’t have done ED, it’s a big deal and you have to be absolutely positive before you sign that contract. My advice is go to Cornell for a year, and work on your applications. Finish senior year strongly so that you may transfer to a different school if you have the desire to in your freshman year. And don’t do anything stupid.

3 things to not do:
-get arrested
-get expelled
-get straight C’s
Avoid these three behaviors and it is highly unlikely you will get rescinded. And yes, getting B’s WILL NOT get you rescinded.

@MichaelS: I don’t think the OP wants to go to another school by getting out of the ED contract…

I might have my second C of my high school career this semester (not in an AP or major related class, though, so phew!), but I’m not too stressed about it. You’d have to suck across the board to get rescinded. It’s so nice to be done with all of this.

Someone from my HS got their acceptance rescinded from another top university when they were arrested for smoking pot. Colleges can be a lot more harsh before you arrive on campus.

If something so bad happened to get yourself rescinded, you probably couldn’t get into any other selective schools anyway, even if it weren’t too late. You would have to go to a non-selective school of some kind.

Well…unless you fail a course or get arrested or something they don’t rescind…

it’s a little early to start worrying about that isnt it

I have a C in an AP class (my first) and 2 Bs in other AP classes. Will I get rescinded? I’m working as hard as possible…

No. 10char

Arrested from smoking pot?

How does that even show up on your record if it’s a petty misdemeanor? It’s just a $180 fine or whatever…

Just how badly do you have to do to risk getting rescinded? I’m not doing it on purpose - but I may end up with a C in one of my AP calculus. How many classes would you need to fail/get a C in?

How urgent is the withdrawal of applications? I was accepted recently but I want to wait until finaid. Is it okay to wait until january?

Hmm. A guy at my school last year got rescinded from UC Santa Cruz because he got a D in Calculus the last quarter. It sucked really bad for him because the final grade was reported after he’d accepted their offer. I guess if he got rescinded before May 1st, he could have chosen someother school he was accepted to… but that doesn’t happen anyway. He’s at a community college right now.

Possession of pot counts as a misdemeanor and will show up on your record if you are over the age of 18 when caught.

As for getting rescinded, just make sure you don’t get a D, or more than like 3 C’s. If you stay above a 3.0 without a D, you’ll be fine.

You don’t have to withdraw other apps until you accept Cornell’s FA offer. The FA letter will give you the deadline.

you should withdraw you applications as soon as possible. especially since you know you are going to cornell, and the other schools are going to begin to make their RD decisions, you dont want them to think you are still interested and then give you an accepted spot rather than someone else who really wanted to go to the school

^ Don’t worry, you’re not taking an accepted spot from someone else. ED is done long before RD admissions are decided.

but im saying if he keeps his applications with the RD applicant pool…
