@gardenstategal, All I remember from Isaly’s were ice cream and Swiss cheese sandwiches, although this was the '60s and I was a little kid. I don’t recall their bologna or ham at all. I also didn’t know they invented the Klondike Bar until reading the history link.
I’ll occasionally make a few hard boiled eggs to keep in the refrigerator for snacks/quick meals, and it finally occurred to me that I could make one of them into a single-serving deviled egg. Much easier than making up a whole batch!
I occasionally just use a dollop of mayo/mustard mix on a hard boiled egg cut in half… sprinkle with smoked paprika, and it is almost as good as a deviled egg.
I remember pineapple upside down cake was one of the first things I learned to cook (after shepherds pie) in school Home Ec.
Baked Alaska used to be a fave. I haven’t had that in years, although I still like it. My neighbor hosts an annual holiday party, the piece-de-resistance is always Ambrosia (jello with canned fruit, salad, canned mixed veg. and all mixed together with mayo!) - it turns my stomach
I didn’t know Waldorf salad was considered ‘retro’ - I don’t make it, but I like it, and I would order it in a restaurant. The first time I became aware of Waldorf salad, was on an episode of Fawlty Towers about thirty years ago!
My mom would make cherry jubilees for special occasion. That is vanilla ice cream, topped with cherries and liquor, which is then flambeed. ( this explanation is for the youngster on CC.)
Oh my goodness, we still eat a lot of this stuff…pineapple upside down cake is a regular in H’s rotation of baked goods that he takes to work (pre-Covid).
My mom and sister loved liver sausage. Gak! Count me in on fried bologna sandwiches, though I haven’t had one since college.
I learned my first dirty word when my dad mispronounced the fluffernutter sandwich was making. First time I’d ever heard my mom yell at him!
