jennie- 4.3ish GPA, 2160 SAT, 34 ACT. I realize those scores aren’t so great, I think what really boosted me is the fact that I do a lot outside of school working with filmmaking and entering film festivals. Hope this helped.

That’s quite an impressive GPA! Did you apply for a film major?
I love film but unfortunately my portfolio is very limited and I didn’t have much time to prepare one to apply for SCA. If I get another chance, I’d definitely try.
Anyway, are you going for sure?

Where is everyone from? I know froggyonice and I are both from NorCal (well, originally) and hlfinsninsmnc is from the Midwest :).

Yup good ol Ohio! A huge reason I want to go to USC–it must be so warm there!

And Jennie, that’s so cool that you might be able to go to school in Shanghai. Is the schooling system that much different in China compared to here?

PS Congrats evman!

Yep I love the warmness of LA. I once spent a winter break visiting family friends in Ohio a few years back. THE COLD WAS HORRIBLE. I love Ohio though; the people are super nice.

From what I know, the schooling system is quite different there as students are much more disciplined and teachers are stricter. However I would go to an international division of a Chinese school (basically still a part of the overall Chinese school community, but with classes taught in English) so it wouldn’t be as bad of a transition.

I really want to go to USC though, it’s been my first choice since freshman year! I had to do course selection for senior year and it’s just basically a bunch of AP classes that I’m not really interested in; and all my teachers who wrote my recs keep asking me about news :/.

Wow, congratulations to all of you who’ve been accepted! Just hearing about it makes me nervous/excited.

Btw, hlfinsninsmnc, I remember a while back on this thread you saying that your application status had changed to “forwarded for committee review”. Mine just did that; do you know what it means?

Also, has anyone here sent in their FAFSA an CSS profile and everything for financial aid? Are RHP students eligible for traditional financial aid?

Hey guys, I found out I got into USC on Friday (but didn’t get the RHP letter until today), and the only reason I wouldn’t go is if they say that it wouldn’t be a good idea to major in astronomy without taking AP Calculus or Physics in high school, because I was planning on taking those senior year. Anyway, for those of you still waiting, compare yourselves to me:

GPA: 3.95 (Much lower than anyone else on here, I believe)
SAT: 2270
Subject Tests: 750 on Math 1, 760 on World History, 770 on Bio-M
ACT: 35
And I haven’t taken any AP tests but right now I’m taking Chem, Spanish Language, and US History

EDIT: Oh, and I’m from CT, much further east than anyone else ha ha

soxpast, My GPA is extremely low compared to yours, but congrats!
Well that’s four so far, five if shumsheh makes it (which will probably happen, seeing the status)

I’m waiting on my Math 2 subject test. I’m super nervous now, but I don’t think the score will have much effect on my application.

Shumsheh, I sent in my financial aid forms a few weeks back (may have been a futile effort) but yeah I think RHP students do qualify for traditional financial aid :)

Jennie, going to school abroad would be so cool! Would you be attending a university there or is there a different system? As for RHP, I’m sure you will have made it, seeing as there are about 30 spots open.

Nah I’d probably only spend senior year though. I would most likely go to school here in the U.S. The only place I’d go to college in besides here is England. I spent a summer at Oxford and it’s amazing there! Plus, they don’t look at GPA and EC’s which would be good for me lol.

Well we also don’t know about other accepted RHPers who don’t post here so for all we know, all the acceptees could have been notified already =/

Do you guys know if we’re supposed to send midyear reports? My semester’s about to finish and I’m not entirely sure if I’m supposed to send my grades. Did anyone here who was accepted submit a midyear report?

I think you only have to send them if they ask you for them. You can send them if you want even if they don’t ask.

Hey, for the people who got accepted, did you guys get scholarship offers or anything? You can check online even if you don’t get a letter (there are some ways to check on threads on here). I want to see if all RHPers were accepted this wave or just the ones up for scholarships or Bac/MD programs. Thanks guy :)

I did send my grades I think? Though I doubt it affected their decision or anything.

And I found out a day or two ago using the online trick that I’m up for a Presidential scholarship, and got the letter confirming that today. I’m glad I’m up for a scholarship at all, but it won’t be enough… I’ve heard sometimes after the interview they’ll bump you up to Trustee, so of course I (the eternal optimist) have my fingers crossed!

Wow that’s amazing! I’m not surprised, seeing that crazy SAT score. I’m just aiming to break 2300 in March but I don’t know. Any tips? :)

I hope you get the Trustee! You probably don’t need the Presidential seeing as you’re already a NMSF (right?). When’s your interview? I’ll have my fingers crossed for you too!

Anyone else lucky enough for a chance at scholarships?

Haha thanks! I really really hope I can get the Trustee! Yeah and since I’m pretty sure I’ll get the National Merit scholarship I don’t even need the Presidential (I wish they added together then it would be a full ride! )

Haha and as for tips… honestly I think I just lucked out. Mostly I’d just say read a little bit about testing strategy–that helped me more than actual practice questions. PS I did AWFUL on the essay (awful in my world–I got a 9/12!!) My older sister about died since she’d gotten a 10 haha. But thankfully I don’t know of any colleges that look at your essay score.

I got a 9 on my essay too! My proctor forgot to give us a 5 minute warning, which I normally use to start my conclusion. Also, my topic was about pop culture, and I came armed with all these classical literature references… I got 2 multiple choice questions wrong so that and essay score dropped me 70 points. I was devastated because writing is usually my best section. What do colleges look at? The final score only? I am really bitter about the SAT curve. I hate my tendency to make really stupid mistakes and how one will cost you like 30 points!

There’s a huge snowstorm coming here tomorrow It’s only my second big snowstorm (the first one came a few months ago) so I’m super excited. Are you going to miss snow if you go to USC? I’m still very Californian at heart because I’m terrified of leaving the house when there’s snow outside unless I’m wearing like 480 layers.

Yeah I was mad about my SAT too, since I’m totally a math person but I did worse on math than writing or reading comp, and I have never really liked english that much. And I don’t think the essay factors into your 2400 score, its just an additional thing they add after your grade.

And that snowstorms hitting us too! At least I assume its the same one? I love snow so much!! I will definitely miss it (and the snow days!) but at least I’d always be home for Christmas and there’s almost always snow then. Haha today it was like 20 degrees and I went out in shorts & a long sleeved tshirt I’m definitely used to the cold

Yeah I have a major rant about how the SAT doesn’t really test anything but I can save that for another time. I probably should stop dissing it so much because I’m going to need to retake it and I don’t want the SAT gods to get angry and fail me or something.

I love snow days! We’re getting out three hours early tomorrow. They’re definitely the best part. Except my school is extremely uptight with snow days and barely gives us any. When all the other counties are cancelled for the day, we get two hour delays. And we have to make them up at the end of the year! Oh jeez 20 degrees sounds intense. I should go out to Ohio and rough it. I was in Philly over the weekend and the 30 degree weather was enough for me to vow not to go to schools in cold places. I’d make some exceptions for Brown or Northwestern though.

Were there any schools you guys wanted to go to besides USC? I like Northwestern’s programs a lot but I don’t know if I could survive in Chicago weather!

:( no snow day for us today, the snow didn’t start till about noon. Now it’s insane, it’s coming down so thick!

I honestly have no idea where I’d want to go… I do like Northwestern, and I have family there, but you’re right Chicago weather is AWFUL. The wind drops the temperature like 30 degrees! But if I’m not able to go to USC this year, I’d probably just apply to a ton of schools and see who gives me scholarships, then try to decide from there.

Oh and tonight a kid who’s in RHP called me! He was really nice and he LOVES it there from what I could tell. He answered a ton of questions I had about USC and life in LA. Oh and he told me they’ve only done the first set of acceptances so if you haven’t gotten accepted don’t lose hope!

Yeah same for us, but we got an early dismissal! There’s a giant snow storm here. We might get 3 feet which is apparently a ton for this area.

Do your parents think Presidential is enough for USC or do you need the Trustee scholarship? I would be thrilled for Presidential but I would be just as thrilled if they would admit me lol. Do you know when their second set of acceptances is? I’m assuming soon or I’ll just hear back in April =/. It’s so cool that they have a guy call though! What kind of questions/answers did you discuss?

I’ll try not to lose hope! It’s hard though, knowing they’ve admitted so many people already! But anyway, are you planning on taking any more subject tests or anything, in case USC doesn’t work out? I’m not looking forward to more standardized testing.

Well I pretty much need Presidential and a ton of financial aid or the Trustee. And I feel like the 2nd set of acceptances should be coming pretty soon? idk though. And the RHP guy and I just talked about what its like living in Trojan Hall (because I haven’t heard a ton of great stuff about living there), what the food’s like, whether he regrets leaving hs early or not (he doesn’t!), etc.

I’m sure you’ll get in! I have my fingers crossed!

And if I don’t end up going, I’ll take the ACT and maybe subject tests… I honestly haven’t thought that far ahead. I hope I don’t have to though!
