Seriously, I thought the issue with infants and tv is how quickly the screen images shift. It’s faster than IRL when, say, you’re observing and processing real time action around you.
Now, there’s the little babe, sorely distracted, reactive, eyes moving at a fast pace, following the action, sometimes even turning their heads.
Wrong pace of things, wrong “training.” My brother was so proud of this and decided his son was brilliant. I warned him, but he insisted. Then, for many years, the only thing that soothed the boy was fast paced action games or that sort of raucous. He developed a serious focus issue, similar to ADHD. Has behavior issues. True, that could be coincidental, but worth thinking about.
I’m not opposed to gaming, but think it’s just wrong to expose them heavily. And this brings up the question of, even if they’re not seeing the screen, how the sound “surprises” affect, as well.
Even if my thinking is off, still worth consideration. There’s good reason lullabies, kid songs, etc are slow and calming. Less stimulation. And at a time when they’re so impressionable.
I’m a terrible Michigander, @Knowsstuff But I hate vernors.
@lookingforward you’ll get no argument from me. Though ADHD is clearly nothing new and we don’t know what causes it (I have plenty of ADHD kids in my 100 year old patient files), overstimulation isn’t good. It’s why baby won’t be facing the screen.
I’m also not naive enough to say “absolutely no screen time for my kid” but we have only one tv (and another in the bedroom though its rarely used) and neither the place where we’ll have their play area set up nor where they eat can see the tv.
Will I give them my phone occasionally so we can have dinner out in peace? Yup. And actually playing things like baby ASL videos is shown to be beneficial to babies. (In short spurts of course)
@Knowsstuff vegetarian so no on the coneys but I do like Coney Island. Their cheese sticks were some of my earliest pregnancy cravings and the 24 hour one closest to us is now very familiar with Mr R.
Custard is a no but no one in my family likes custard - and my dad is 4th generation Detroiter ?. I do love a good raspberry paczki does that count? lol
As for Buddy’s… yes, we get take out at least once a week. It’s such a bad habit. I’m currently munching on a heated up cheese slice with my antipasto salad ?.
I don’t like Faygo either. I like their root beer! And my dad loves the red pop. But other than that, I just don’t get it.
I used to spend summers in LA with my uncle and he’d always request two half-baked pepperoni pizzas from buddy’s and two bottles of red pop as my “payment” for coming to stay with him lol. This was before the liquid bans on flights…
That counts. If you don’t like custard (frozen on Woodward yum), then you probably don’t like Sanders hot fudge either lol. Just bought a bumpy cake for my son’s birthday… Yum…
Anyway… Glad your feeling better. ?. Think my date was April 6th and a girl… Wishing you an easy delivery and a healthy baby Jedi ?.
I’m doing better too but not quite as well as he is. Persistent cough and still generally just exhausted.
I had my first NST for baby this morning since the ER visit last week. Baby did very well - all we had to do was a quick ultrasound/biophysical profile and baby hit all their benchmarks for the first time (breathing practice, moving limbs, fluid looks good… and something else I don’t remember) . I didn’t even have to be hooked up to the fetal heart monitor today.
I’ve been ready for baby to come out for weeks but now that everything is in flux (U of M is changing its policies almost daily), I’m telling Bub to stay in as long as possible lol.
At least little Jedi has stayed in and has allowed his lungs to develop so if he needs to, he could safely be born any time. That must be a huge relief!
S/he even hit the suck reflex benchmark! Things you don’t remember from medical school that you learn when your kid is too young for that. Relax- now yours is basically putting on baby fat and won’t look like a scrawny monkey like my 33 weeker did (he had passed the lung maturity stage).
So far so good. Baby has definitely dropped and I’m experiencing contractions. Don’t think they’re “real” yet because they’re not regular. Moving around is very, very uncomfortable so I’ve been mostly on couch rest the last few days.
I’d guess that baby is going to be here much sooner rather than later. (I’ll be 36 weeks on Monday). I have a MFM appointment on Monday where we’ll be officially setting my induction date. My liver numbers have gotten worse (still better than before treatment, but worse than they were post-treatment start) so it’s probably going to be sooner than we thought.
Baby has been doing well at all of our NSTs. They’re finally being cooperative lol. It just takes chugging a can of pop beforehand. Juice? They sleep right through. (Yes, this is approved by my docs.)
Mr R is, as of today, on what I’ve taken to calling coronaty leave. (He’s on medical leave because of me but it happens to coincide with the pregnancy so corona + paternity leave = coronaty leave.) We’re hoping he gets approved for fed unemployment payments but even not, especially after getting the flu from one of his clients a week or so ago, I’d rather he be home. (No PTO.)
My mom will be down here as of tomorrow. She’s been in self-quarantine for 3 weeks without any symptoms. Mr R and I need her help getting the house together since we STILL have lingering effects from the flu. We both still get winded after doing much of anything.
To my shame, I still have not gotten thank you cards out. At this point it might not happen until after baby gets here. I sent out a batch and got a bunch returned because I screwed up the address somehow. My brain is just not processing things correctly lol.
@MaineLonghorn 39 weeks is the absolute latest they’ll let me go - which is why we were aiming for April 10 as the induction date. (April 13 would be 39 weeks exactly.) And that was before the liver issues.
I’m hoping the little Jedi makes their own way out. My sister was induced THREE times before finally going in for a c-section. I didn’t know inductions could fail and I do not want that lol
