"Romantic" movies.

Speaking of French romantic films:

AMELIE '01
and almost all the Truffaut “Antoine Doinel” series
especially STOLEN KISSES '68 (Baisers Voles)

I loved Love Actually. The cast is fantastic.

Roman Holiday, Pride & Prejudice (Colin Firth), and years ago, my sister & I loved Disney’s Moonspinners.

Anything with Colin Firth in it is a good movie.

Housesitter with Goldie Hawn and Steve Martin

Green Card

The Wedding Date - Dermot Mulroney at his most beautiful

500 Days of Summer

Truly Madly Deeply

Groundhog Day

I forgot “Truly Madly Deeply”
nothing more romantic than the dulcet tones of Alan Rickman’s voice

Also:

Ghost

What Women Want

Beauty and the Beast (yes, the cartoon)

My daughter loves: 500 Days of Summer and P.S. I Love You

ek:

I thought about mentioning Days Of Heaven, but it’s not really romantic, more about visual images, and the crazed destructive ending is kind of a downer, romance-wise. One of my favorite movies of all time, too. Gere and Shepard ARE attractive, Brooke Adams, too, but none of them as much as the gazebo curtains. (Supposedly, Malick has completed work on the long-awaited sequel to that, The Tree of Life. But it was supposed to have been released already, and hasn’t been. Not a good sign.)

Disliking Ethan Hawke generally should not interfere with your enjoyment of Before Sunrise. You’re supposed to be a little suspicious of him.

Another nice romantic movie: Il Postino

Also: Bull Durham

It’s interesting. I probably see at least 4-5 “romcoms” a year (more when I had a tweenage daughter at home and we saw all the teen romcoms). I don’t mind them; I usually enjoy them. But very, very few of them are memorable at all.

Ah, You’ve Got Mail–one of the most “pro-corporate power crushing the little guy movies” of all time. Book people *like *this???
I’ll second Moonstruck, Chocolat, and Bull Durham. Wonderful movies with strong male and female characters. Four Weddings and a Funeral, too. love that movie. Have a soft spot for Jerry McGuire, too.

A classic–It Happened One Night.

A Little Romance, Once, The Taste of Others, Dear Frankie. . .

oh yes, Paris je t’aime!

Growing up I was constantly assaulted by my two sisters’ adoration of Audrey Hepburn. I just couldn’t understand it! I much preferred women with more obvious sensual attributes, like Marilyn Monroe.

As I (finally) matured, some 40 or so years later, it hit me how right they were. Watching her in Roman Holiday, I finally appreciated her unique loveliness. And, her acting was exquisite. In some of the scenes she says everything there is to say with her eyes – especially the last one, when she looks at Bill Bradley (Gregory Peck) for the last time…knowing that there brief happiness together is over, that they must go their separate ways and that she would give anything to be with him again…but she can’t…

Whew! (Funny how memorable Roman Holiday is – all without a music score of any consequence!)

Moving right along, I second Out of Africa as a great romantic film – and a great film!
The cinematography, the setting(!!!), the music, the pace, the characters, the meticulous details all combine to make it perhaps the top of my list of great films. Meryl Streep…what praise can I give her that has not already been given?

An Affair to Remember because Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant just look so darn good! There was a reason why they referenced it in Sleepless in Seattle…

I do love the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice. For Audrey Hepburn, I would probably pick Charade.

I love “MOONSTRUCK”, my most favorite is “Grease”. I like all oldies with Meg Ryan, young Molly Ringwald and Andy Mcdowal - Greencard…(I definitely misspelled all names).

Shadowlands with Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. This is so sad that I cried when I watched it on an airplane without sound.

Love Actually is great fun, but then I like all the Hugh Grant movies. Perfect fluff. I also agree the old B&W movies with all the smoke can’t be beat. How about Lauren Bacall and Henry Bogart in To Have and Have Not.

If we are going to talk about food movies, don’t forget Babette’s Feast and *Eat, Drink, Man, Woman.
*
And if you don’t mind a Bromance - Brokeback Mountain was about as romantic as it gets.

Dr Zhivago #1 favorite.

no one has mentioned Sweet Home Alabama. I can’t turn it off if I am channel surfing.

I know this isn’t the actor thread, but I have to respectfully disagree regarding Tom Hanks. Excepting Forrest Gump, of course. Here is what happens almost every time I see him in a movie… I start out thinking, “Oh, he is a pretty average looking guy.”. But somehow by the end of the movie that incredibly NICE guy persona gets to me (and he is also smart), and I find him very attractive. Happens to me in real life with real people, too… a great, nice personality definitely improves a guy’s attractiveness. I’d take Tom Hanks over 99% of the guys in Hollywood.

Just came across West Side Story the other night and had to watch it through. Makes me cry every single time.

Yes. It celebrates books. Actual, physical books, not Kindles or Nooks. Plus it’s Nora Ephron’s usual romance with New York - I mean, who really has an apartment like Meg Ryan’s? So it’s not only about love and books, it’s also shelter porn. :)

Amen to this!
