I’m coming in a few days and my D1 just called to tell me to make sure to bring a jacket and some pants. Whaaaat? I knew it would be cooler but I’m a bit surprised. Still, can’t wait! It will be a first for me.
Last year I went to Mother’s Day brunch in a sundress so you never know.
Totally agree.
Or drove out to Julian.
IIRC, you didn’t rent a car…so maybe not.
Anza Borrego is a lovely area. Maybe rent s car for the day and go and do it for some fun in the sun. I hiked it around 1980–lovely area!
@greenwitch , I think next week it will be lovely, so you’ll be good. Went to Altitude Skybar for drinks last night., That was impressive, fun seeing Petco Park from up there. Had dinner at Rustic Root, what a fun place. Gaslamp is really fun at night, never been there before. All the places look so cool to stop in. Very nice area.
We will see what our last day brings. Thanks for the suggestions. We will just stay in town, and try to do what we had planned. I did bring 4 travel umbrellas.
@conmama - Sorry our May Gray has turned to rain. Altitude is a fun place to grab a drink with the view of Petco. We also like Rustic Root. Midway is a great choice for today. If you haven’t been to North Park before there is a big street fair/art festival today which should be really fun. There are also great food and breweries there. I recommend Tribute Pizza and Eppig Brewing or Mike Hess Brewing if you visit North Park.
@greenwitch - looks like weather is in the low 70’s next week and it may rain next Thursday. What area are you staying in? What are your plans while visiting?
We’re having what I am calling “May Spray”: drizzle and rain. Normally, it’s cloudy all month. This has been very unusual weather.
Yes, told Seattle son he made the right choice to fly down for Father’s Day instead of Mother’s Day this year. Sunny and warm up there.
@showmom858 - we’re staying right near dog beach, and we’re bringing our dog, lol. Should have asked here first!
We’ll be in LA first, not getting to San Diego until next Thursday. D lives near Temecula Heights. I have a cousin too, not sure where she lives, but she works at the UCSD med center.
@Marilyn - yes, we will be hitting 80 plus today - for the third day in a row. Back to the normal clouds and 60 or so next week!
Mr. thought we would be going to San Diego next weekend but our plans have changed.
I’d always be happy to meet cc visitors to our city - just pm me! (Especially if you going to Cabrillo, my neighborhood national park.)
@greenwitch - You will be in Ocean Beach where D2 lives. There are a lot of good places to eat there along with breweries and bars. Hopefully you will be in walking distance so you can enjoy!
Looks like the rain will be ending at noon and the sun will be coming out. Fingers crossed!
Anza Borrego could be a unique day trip – seeing the dozens of impressive animal sculptures in Borrego Springs (https://californiathroughmylens.com/anza-borrego-sculptures ), taking a short hike to “The Slot” (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/the-slot ), etc. If you are feeling really adventures, seeing the Goat Canyon Trestle (https://californiathroughmylens.com/goat-canyon-trestle ) or Mud Caves (https://www.desertusa.com/anza_borrego/Mud_Caves.html ) .
However, most of these areas are ~2 hour drive from San Diego, making it a full day trip. And with highs of 80s today and 90s later on in the week, I don’t think this is the best time of year. There are a lot of interesting and unique things to see that are far closer. For example, my parents visited recently and seemed to really like the Gliderport and surrounding clffs/beach/view, which according to the weather report has pargliders today. We also stopped by some other more common tourist spots while in the area, such as Mt Soledad.
@conmama just to make you feel better about a little rain.
We were in San Diego when our kids were little…maybe 6 and 9 or so. We watched the weather very carefully because they really wanted to go to Sea World. Well…it was fine when we arrived there…and the forecast was fine too. But less than 10 minutes after we paid a small fortune for admission, the skies opened up. And I mean torrential pouring rain. For those who have been to Sea World San Diego, you know the only place that has a roof is the Beer Garden…
Anyway…the rain never stopped. It was so rainy that even Shamu was not out. They finally just closed the park and asked us all to leave…oh…and with no offer of a rain check or refund.
Our kids still love San Diego!!
Today turned into a pretty nice day - several hours of sun after the rain stopped.
Thanks for your story @thumper1, that stinks there was no rain check or anything. It stopped raining at noon which was delightful! We ended up going fir a Bay tour later in the afternoon, which we all enjoyed, The boys didn’t want to tour the USS Midway, which really annoyed me. The took off for La Jollla late in the morning to go back to some store and have breakfast (I think they were tired of being around us). Anyway, I felt like we were waiting around for them all day. When we finally made it to the Embarcadero and they saw the Midway, I could tell how In awe they were. I knew they knew they made a mistake, which just annoyed me more. DH had to keep telling me to let it go.
Anyway, we spent our last night tonight at our favorite bar JRDN and had dinner there.
The great thing about San Diego is that even with the chilly cold weather, we had interesting things to go to. Thanks all for letting me whine and helping me out.
Just got back and had a great trip! Yes, it felt chilly to me at times and my one jacket got a workout, but it was still wonderful. We ran around the beach a bit, saw the lovely harbor seals at La Jolla, went to the farmer’s market in Little Italy and ate there later that night, wandered around Balboa Park a bit, and just had fun.
Didn’t get to the Midway, or the Japanese friendship garden, or any vineyards, or Gastown, or my cousin (who was in Switzerland), or to see any lovely CC friends, but I will most likely be back! D just has a 3 month gig there but is going to extend it to 6 months.
@greenwitch - sorry our San Diego weather was not at it’s finest while you were here. It sounds like you had a lovely time anyway. Since your D will be staying longer I’m sure your next visit will be nice and sunny!
